- France Football just named the latest Ballon d’Or winner. And of course, some people are excited about the results, while some feel like their favorite player was cheated. Well, that’s how it always is almost every year. But to be honest, on quite a number of occasions, some fans have had a right to feel cheated.
We are not in any way questioning the integrity of France Football, but what we know is that, sometimes, the award has gone to players who were not the most deserving that year. And in this video, we bring you 6 very controversial Ballon d’Or winners
Lionel Messi, 2021
Yes. Messi fans may hate us for this one because it’s still very fresh. But think about it, did Messi really outdo Robert Lewandowski in 2021?
Okay yes, they both crashed out early in the Champions League, but Lewandowski did better for his club everywhere else. He won the Bundesliga and the Club World Cup as the best player in both tournaments. Not to forget the DFL Super Cup he won in August scoring 2 goals in that final.
Messi, on the other hand, won just the Copa del Rey with Barcelona. And yes, he won the league’s Golden Boot, but Lewandowski also did. And even did it better. The Polish striker outscored every other player in European leagues, thereby clinching the European Golden Shoe together with his Bundesliga Golden Boot.
If we’re talking goal contributions, Lewandowski was definitely clear of every other player in 2021. And if we’re talking trophies, Jorginho was clear of everybody else. He not only won trophies, but he won the biggest ones available this year.
So, how France Football ended up with Lionel Messi, we just will never know.

The 2013 one isn't as scandalous as you might think. The top 3 that year were Ronaldo, Messi and Ribery - all 3 are forwards. Ronaldo had more goal contributions that year than Messi and Ribery combined. That is why he won it, because he was overwhelmingly the best player of that season individually.

Ronaldo didn't win any major trophy and won whereas Ribery won the Treble (UCL, League and League Cup) and still finished 3rd in Ballon D'or Voting.
Ronaldo and Ribery were both wingers/wide players that year. Ronaldo scored 59 goals for Madrid that year and Ribery scored 16 goals for Bayern. In the 2012/13 UCL, Ronaldo was top scorer with 12 goals whereas Ribery only scored 1 goal. Ronaldo was without a doubt the best player at Madrid in the 2012/13 season and the only one keeping them competitive. I agree Ribery was the best player at Bayern during the 2012/13 season but was Robben, Lahm and Neuer that far from him. They were also as important as Ribery to that Bayern team's success.
2019 Ballon D'or :
Van Dijk won the UCL, finished runner's up in the Nations League and runner's up in the League (1 point) but still finished 2nd to Leo Messi who had only won La Liga that year.
Messi scored 51 goals from 50 games for Barca in 2018/19. Was the Top Scorer in the League and UCL. He was by far the best player at Barca and the only one who was keeping them competitive on all fronts right till the end. I do agree Van Dijk had one of the best seasons a defender has had in recent memory but was Van Dijk carrying that Liverpool team like Messi carried Barca? Was the likes of Sadio Mane, Mo Salah and Allisson that far from Van Dijk during that season? They were also as important as Van Dijk to that Liverpool team's success.
When Messi and Ronaldo retire, we all will truly realize how great they were season after season for such a long time...
Messi and Ronaldo are Great without a doubt but sometimes The Power and influence that Barcelona and Real Madrid have in modern football is what made them to win the Ballon d'or not their own performance coz if we are only looking at Brilliant performance then I'm sure Lewandowski would have 1 or 2 BALLON d'ors by now from 2020 and 2021
I agree with what ur saying, but Messi wasn’t carrying Barca in 2019. Barca had Ter Stegen, Suarez, Vidal, Pique, Rakititc, De Jong, Paulinho, Umtiti, Alba, and Busquets. Messi is way better than all of them but all those mentioned players are legends in their respective positions.

In Lewandowski's case his impact was mostly seen where he didn't play - Bayern's games against PSG and Poland's flop against 2nd squad of Hungary. Also, Lewy's goal contribution (goals + assists per all goals of club and country) in 2021 is bigger than Messi's.
you're right. It's not about winning and even scoring goals, the impact is the key. Some player can dribble past whole team and then pass the ball to teammate who taps it in in the empty net, teammate scores but basically the guy who dribbled the whole team did all the job.

What about Copa America? When you look at FIFA rankings and market value, Brasil and Uruguay are the only teams that count beside Argentina. Winning Copa America after so many tries is not in favour of Messi. Scoring 3 goals against 70+ FIFA ranked Bolivia (equivalent of UEFA's Israel who didn't qualify to Euro2020) is not much of a feat.

Lewy's got more trophies, more goal contribution ratio (goals+assists out of all goals of their clubs and national teams), was more consistent (scored or assisted in every game with stronger opponents or in a trophy winning game, whereas Messi scored/assisted only in 4 such games and in one Messi got a red card for punching his opponent). Ppl tend to think Lewandowski was better in 2021 only in goals, but that's BS.

You literally made a video 2 days ago comparing Lewandowski and Messi in terms of stats. While very close, Messi was better in terms of stats. And while Lewandowski may have won more trophies, that's not convincing enough, because Messi won a trophy with a trashy Barcelona side, and of coursewon the Copa America.
Now I'll give you an example how ludicrous it would be, if he had not won.
Take for example Sterling, if he had scored 42 goals, made 19 assists, won the FA Cup, and won the Euros. No one in their right mind would take Lewandowski over Sterling in this hypothetical world.
And to top it off, Messi's average grade over the 20/21 season was 8.52 and Lewandowski 8.07.
Your reasoning is still wrong because the award is based on subjective votes. Not perfomance stats. Some of the people who voted don't have tv subscriptions to all Bayern matches in their countries. Even if RL9's stats were better in areas you deem important, he still wouldn't have won.

Because, if it is based only on statistics, Messi should have won it 9 times by now, and no, that is not a joke, nor a statement to make you aggravated. If you have watched football over the last 15 years, and remember each year, you'll know that almost every year, Messi was ahead in goals. Balond'Or has no standard operating system, it is truly a political award. I seriously think the voting is rigged.
Instead of people voting the player, there should be certain point system based on the goals scored, assists, chances created, interceptions, mvp of the match, and saves made.
If all these stats are indicated by points, it will even encourage the players to do their best because they'd know their tally throughout.
Until such standard operating system is laid it will forever be controversial due to which the credibility of the former winners will always be questioned.

It is based on popular opinion (votes) and not a point system, where every statistic is meticulously calculated. 1 Goalkeeper has ever won the ballon d'or and 3 defenders. Considering you have had defenders like Nesta, Cafu, Maldini, Jaap Stam, and goalkeepers like Buffon, Schmeicel, Oliver Kahn, van der Sar, all of whom has been instrumental on both club and international level (and none whom have won Ballon d'or). It is pretty clear that the ballon d'or is simply a trophy awarded to the most popular offensive player.

Why are titles even considered when rating a player's individual performance. So long as he plays in one of the major leagues in Europe his personal stats should really stand out above anything else. That's includes dribbles and assists for example... so no, Iniesta 2010, Modric 2018 and Ribery 2013 did not deserve Ballon D'or.
Lewandowski should have one it 2020. I don't know why they dont just give him the 2020 Ballon D'or like they did with Pele. There was nothing hard about doing that.

I agree with all of them apart from Ribery 2013. Ribery that year was simply world class as he was Bayern’s best player that year. Contributed 43 g/a (which may not be the right numbers) in 55 games for a LM like him which is actually impressive.
Ribery also ended the 2012/13 CL season as the top assist and even, assisted in Bayern’s 2-1 victory against BVB and eventually won the UEFA men’s best player of the year. He even went on to win MOTM in the uefa super cup against Chelsea and the CWC player of the tournament.

Ribery had the best season as a team player, sure. but individual awards are given for individual performance, if Ronaldo had not scored more than Messi and Ribery combined overall + UCL, then Ribery would have won it. I get why bayern fans are upset coz Ribery certainly had a dramatic season, but Ronaldo was complete that year, with a not so good team as they seemed out of sink in 2012 and 2013, yet Ronaldo performed amazing in both years.
