Volcano Watch 2023: The Eruption's Aftermath

  • Videographer Art Bicnick filmed on location from Grindavík the afternoon of December 22 to to capture this footage of the town that was evacuated amid seismic unrest on November 10, and the site of the eruption near Sunhnúkagígar that began at 10:17 p.m. on December 18, and which volcanologists have already declared over.
    This latest eruption is both the strongest and shortest lived of those seen on peninsula in recent years. 90 minutes after high-magnitude earthquakes at Sunhnúkagígar, a 4 km fissure opened, producing curtains of lava at a rate of 200 cubic metres per second.
    That had diminished to a third of the volume within 24 hours as the fissure consolidated down to five and then just two eruptive vents. It had petered out entirely by December 21st.
    While the eruption appears to be over, scientists continue watching the signs that a magma chamber is filling up roughly 5 km beneath Svartsengi - the area on which the Svartsengi Power Plant and the Blue Lagoon sit.

    The comparison with Krafla is interesting because that area is located directly over the tectonic plates in the north in exactly the same way as Reykanes in the south. As I understand it, the Krafla Fires lasted from 1975 to 1984.

    • @Vulcano7965
      @Vulcano7965 5 місяців тому +3

      With the small difference that Krafla is also a more defined volcanic system with previous explosive eruptions forming calderas. So there might still be some differences in the eruption dynamic after all. But for now it seems more comparable than the last three eruptions at Fagradalsfjall

    Thanks for sharing. I wonder how many people actually return to Grindavik and how they feel about the whole situation and the future of living in that area. I know there were lawsuits against government because government shouldn't deny people's access to their own property. Still i hope the people who actually return are well informed and get an alarm of some sort as soon as the next eruption starts or dangerous gasses are detected...

    Semi-random question: does anyone know why the Reykjavik Grapevine’s main avatar/logo is a “Crossed Out Gray Guy Profile Picture.” That description of it was what I found online, but I couldn’t find any particular reason for its creation, nor the reason why RG is currently using it. Is it a winter thing? Thanks so much!
    Also, very happy residents have the choice to go home for the holidays. Seeing so many displaced, it’s nice to think some will be able to celebrate within the comfort of their family homes. ♥️🎄♥️

      @@MrKorton LOL... "science/reality"...
      Your "science/reality" says men can become women and have babies...LOL
      Thanks, I stick with my "religion" that never changes on any subject... I can depend on the Word of God the same today as Noah did when God told him to build the ark.
      You can't depend on anything your "educated professionals" say. It changes from "knowledge" to "knowledge" and always comes back to exactly what God says... Weather, land changes, ocean and the life within it... rocks falling from the sky... your "experts" take the long way around and miss the mark with each step... LOL... "reality"...LOL
      I suggest you work on making God a "science" in your life sir, because God is about to give this world a big dose of "reality" when He turns you over to the desires of your heart and lets you reap the "reward" for your actions... Think loathsome sores and wanting to die by not being able to... you want to live forever??? What will be that "forever"?

    Those cracks in town are a clear indicator that the town of grindivik is on its last breathe and it's only a matter of time when the fissures explode.
    Its a waste of time and money building those walls of earthen materials. Insanity is rampant within the Icelandic government.

    Every time there is an eruption Iceland proclaims it’s going to be the longest and most destructive eruption in the last 50 years. Looks like they are getting weaker and shorter actually. I know Iceland really wants those tourists attractions but stop letting it get in the way of actually science and start acting more professional.
