Paul von Hindenburg's military career was already over when World War 1 broke out. He fought in legendary German battles like Königgrätz or Sedan and now was retired. But he returned in 1914 and became a living legend after the victory over the Russians at Tannenberg 1914. During the war he and Erich Ludendorff turned Germany in a de facto military dictatorship to steer the entire country through this total war. But Germany still lost and Hindenburg was also responsible for setting up the Dolchstoßlegende - the myth of the stab in the back of the undefeated German Army.

This man had such an impressive life! Born in 1847. Saw Germany getting unificated. Commanded the armies in WW1 then saw his nation he grew up with be destroyed. In his 80's still politically active. And his last words: "Mein Kaiser... mein deutsches vaterland"
This man is germany is a part of germany as much germany was a part of him.

Also the Second Schleswig war, and the Austro-Prussian war.

He topped that when he was about to die. When he became weak and felt death will come soon he went to his home Neudeck and when his doctor examined him he asked him "Is friend Death alredy in the room?" the doctor replied "No, not yet, but he´s sneaking around the house." a few days later the doctor examined Hindenburg again and told him: "Now friend Death is on your doorstep" and Hindenburg replied: "Then tell him, I´ll ask him in." THAT was cool!

I still remember my great-grandmother, who was born in 1881, singing "Wir wollen uns'ren guten Kaiser Wilhelm wieder hab'n" (We want our good Emperor Wilhelm back). She referred to Wilhelm II's grandfather, Wilhelm I, who obviously WAS a good emperor and it confirms what Indy said about what many Germans thought of Wilhelm II - not very much. Sadly my great-grandmother died in 1970 when I was five years old, but that memory lives on. She never arrived in post-war democracy, but she was a great old lady.

BTW: did you know that there is a well preserved prussian-german fort here in Poznań? There is a gruop of history enthusiasts taking care of it, and they even guide tourists, dressed in the german 1st WW uniforms.

There is one very interesting about Hindenburg that in my opinion should always be mentioned:
Paul von Hindenburg was the only head of state Germany ever had, that was directly and democratically elected by the people. All the others were monarchs, dictators, elected by the parliament or commisioned. It is a funnny fact considering that this honor goes to a man like Hindenburg who was not neccessarily against democracy but also not really in favor of it.
I actually wanted to write this to you before you make the "who did what in WW1" on Hindenburg. Unfortunately I forgot it somehow... So it didn't make it.

  • @CzechMirco

Fun fact: During the Austro-Prussian war of 1866 Hindenburg became quite well acquainted with the geography of northeastern Bohemia, knowing among other things that there was a town called Broumov (back then known by its German name "Braunau"). And 60 years later he relentlessly trolled Hilter by calling him "the Czech corporal" despite knowing very well that Hitler was born in a completely different Braunau, the austrian Braunau am Inn. Since Hitler has already been peeved by the way "Reich" Germans looked down their noses at his austrian ancestry and since he hated Czechs, he didn't take this trolling well.

5:12 Thank you for your fair analysis of the merits of Hindenburg and Ludendorff.
So Ludendorff was the architect and creator of the victory at Tannenberg, but Hindenburg gets the full glory. I would call it a good team work between laborer and leader, between production and management/marketing, between intelligence and charisma.

    • @sircastic959
      @sircastic959 6 років тому +2

      NEIN NEIN NEIN NEIN!
That translation is not perfectly correct and thus unacceptable for a German:
"On this stone the Russian wave shall break" would be correct.
Because "Russenwelle" is one of these funny German combined words like Streifenwagenpolizist (police-car + policeman, describing a policeman who´s job it is to be on the beat with his car)
Now "Welle" is the singular for Wave and even though "Russen" =Russians, plural or "Russe", the last word determines whether it is singular or plural.
For a plural it would have been "An diesem Stein sollen sich die Russenwellen brechen", then the translation would be correct.
Now the funny thing is you can string as many words together as you like, leading to some really fun stuff like: Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz (Yes, this is officially a word, I´ll give you a hint about it, it´s singular, the first word is "beef" and the last word is "law" but I am not telling you what it is about)

Always Hindenburg and Ludendorff - and they forget Max Hoffman, the real hero of Tannenberg.
He was the chief of staff under von Prittwitz who after Prittwitz was relieved, planned the attack and sent the divisions in motion - before H & L came and took charge - and credit for the battle.
Max Hoffman did end up as chief of staff of all Russian front armies.
He was a bit bitter to be forgotten at Tannenberg - he said later,"See - this is where Hindenburg slept before the battle, this is where Hindenburg slept after the battle, and this is where Hindenburg slept during the battle."

I really hope that once the channel wraps in November of next year that Indy and the team work hard and get ready by March of 2019 so that they may create and promote the sequel channel for WW2 and in the downtime do as much research as possible.
I know that WW2 didn't officially start until September but theres a lot of stuff that happened in March 1939 that lead up to WW2 and theres a lot of other stuff that happened in the preceeding years that needs to be covered before the invasion of Poland and the war starting in earnest

I must say that the results of the Hindenberg programme are hotly debated to this day. some credit it with boosting production. Others suggest that this was due to orders placed earlier in the war catching up and that the economic chaos and mismanagement of resources by Hindenberg and OHL stifled the potential production. its a complex issue well worth reading up on. (books like the Silent dictatorship or Ring of Steel being the most respected works in academia from what I've heard)

Well, I mentioned his lifestyle because before Hitler entered the German army in WWI he lived what is often known as a 'Bohemian life': an aspiring artist who lived a penniless, drifting existence. I'm not sure if that is the reason though.
