The Hero Of Tannenberg - Paul von Hindenburg I WHO DID WHAT IN WW1?

Paul von Hindenburg's military career was already over when World War 1 broke out. He fought in legendary German battles like Königgrätz or Sedan and now was retired. But he returned in 1914 and became a living legend after the victory over the Russians at Tannenberg 1914. During the war he and Erich Ludendorff turned Germany in a de facto military dictatorship to steer the entire country through this total war. But Germany still lost and Hindenburg was also responsible for setting up the Dolchstoßlegende - the myth of the stab in the back of the undefeated German Army.

i am pretty sure that spongebob i am ready is from Hindenburg references
Man, hearing how awesome he is makes me want to name a giant flying aircraft after him, I bet that would be totally safe and glorious!
Lol yeah. Best idea ever
No way man. It doesn't capture the strength of the man. Instead we should name a defensive line after him. I'm sure it'll never break!
Be sure that you have a steady supply of helium from the USA so you don't have to use hydrogen instead.
I don't foresee anything bad possibly happening here! Make it happen President Trump. It's gonna be yu-u-uge!!

Vote Paul von Hindenburg. Make Germany great again!

Let's build a Hindenburg Line and let France pay for it.

Perhaps the worst deal of all time.

This man had such an impressive life! Born in 1847. Saw Germany getting unificated. Commanded the armies in WW1 then saw his nation he grew up with be destroyed. In his 80's still politically active. And his last words: "Mein Kaiser... mein deutsches vaterland"

Hissam Ullah yes you are right my mistake
I wish the Franco-Prussian war gained more attention, because it's basically the prequel of ww1.
I think that was covered in the prelude, but I think more should be written about the wars of the Mid 19th century, Austro-Prussian, Franco-Prussian and the Crimea as European Powers consolidated at home and expanded colonially on a global scale.
@Arch Stanton - Belive you're right. My thoughts exactly.
Also the Second Schleswig war, and the Austro-Prussian war.
Between the three they chronicle both the rise of Germany itself as a military power, but also the underlying animosity and aggression between Germany and the rest of Europe.
Not exactly. There were many battles that were prequels of ww1. Some of them were closer in being technology advanced as ww1.
I'd say the napoleonic wars are the proto-world wars.
“Am ready”
Brilliant reply
He topped that when he was about to die. When he became weak and felt death will come soon he went to his home Neudeck and when his doctor examined him he asked him "Is friend Death alredy in the room?" the doctor replied "No, not yet, but he´s sneaking around the house." a few days later the doctor examined Hindenburg again and told him: "Now friend Death is on your doorstep" and Hindenburg replied: "Then tell him, I´ll ask him in." THAT was cool!
3 years later I'm re watching this series. This was the best and most in depth WW1 documentary ever made

I still remember my great-grandmother, who was born in 1881, singing "Wir wollen uns'ren guten Kaiser Wilhelm wieder hab'n" (We want our good Emperor Wilhelm back). She referred to Wilhelm II's grandfather, Wilhelm I, who obviously WAS a good emperor and it confirms what Indy said about what many Germans thought of Wilhelm II - not very much. Sadly my great-grandmother died in 1970 when I was five years old, but that memory lives on. She never arrived in post-war democracy, but she was a great old lady.
I am back
That’s great that you were able to meet your great grandmother. It’s too bad that she did not arrive in post war democracy. My great grandfather was born in 1878 but I never did get to meet him. Just stories really. He died in 1952. I wasn’t born until 1994 so only my parents have readily told me stories.

Great video! My name is Tatiana von Sperling and I'm his great-granddaughter. I'm Brazilian so I feel really honored to know how important he was to Germany.
Is that so? Do explain in detail how you are his great-granddaughter.
Really? How and how are you his Great Grand daughter?
Dang, that’s cool

@@diet18schannel48 Sorry I haven't seen the messages before. He was married to Gertrud von Sperling. Their grandson came to Brazil to be a consul of Germany. That's why a part of his family is now in Brazil.

Those political cartoons really get across what was going on at the time. Thanks for including them and for making these high quality videos so regularly.
Excellent! This channel always makes me regret, or even get angry with the simplified (that is a polite phrasing) history of WW1 that I was taught in high school and university.
What History is not simplified in high school?
And in University you are expected to learn yourself, I am currently learning that myself, the hard way.
I was lucky enough to have really great history teachers...They would always get side tracked with the longer story of what we were learning..Then fly through what we were "supposed" to know
Hindenburg was such an legendary general, that when the second world war was nearing it's end, an unit of US army soldiers was deployed to move his remains & those of his wife & Fredrick the great out of an eastern berlin mausollum before soviet troops arrived there to destroy them.
That’s exactly the kinda cringe you’d expect from the US
@@dylanrodrigueshow is that cringe
I really appreciate the love for History that your presentations show. Thank you very much for that passion. These are true human dramas, and you convey them excellently
Where is the ludendorff special?
The need to be one
The Ludendorff Special? Sounds delicious.
Daniel Large A think a special with a square of between Monash and Ludendorff would be interesting. Ludendorff, an antisemite vs the German Jew Australian. 😊
Ludendorf was nothing without bis wingman Hindenburg XD
"Prussia was not a country with an army, but an army with a country".
Who said that?
@@Physiker17 Voltaire said," Other States have army, Prussian army has a state".
Hindenburg's first home still stands in the Old Town of Poznań (Poland) at Podgórna Street.
Is it marked in any way?
Unfortunatly no. There was a memory board, but it was placed there in 1939, after the nazis invasion on Poland, and it was there till 1945. I guess that there's no chance to see that board again due to a difficult German-Polish history, which Hindenburg was a part of.
BTW: did you know that there is a well preserved prussian-german fort here in Poznań? There is a gruop of history enthusiasts taking care of it, and they even guide tourists, dressed in the german 1st WW uniforms.
Warning - small hint - it's only 275 km from Berlin ;)
NerdHub is it the citadel of posen, which was a major part in the ww2 battle of Posen as well?
Is there still a strong Prussian identity in that area of Poland? I find it interesting that the most "Germanic" identity i.e. the Prussian one, is actually from a place in Poland.
Funfact: Hindenburg was 1.98m (6'6 ft) tall.
my grand grand uncle was his butler and a good friend of him...he talked to paul short before he died...and also got the iron crusade...awesome
I love the way you go into personal detail about these people. Makes you think about how their lives may have played out and what their emotions may have been. Makes them feel more human.
The best piece of documentary about von Hindenburg I've ever encountered!
What a name!
I was so much waiting for this episode!!! Thanks guys!!
I subscribed to this channel via the guys at forgotten weapons about a week ago. This is outstanding. I'm working my way through 1914 right now and just want to thank this channel for the exhaustive history. Really an amazing commitment to getting it right and objective reporting. Thank you for devoting so much time to this project.
Welcome to the show.
Hindenburg's hair reminds me of my chemistry teacher at SRJC. Mr. Anderson sported a Marine haircut in his 60s! (He was 'retired' from the USMC at 39.5 years of service.)
There is one very interesting about Hindenburg that in my opinion should always be mentioned:
Paul von Hindenburg was the only head of state Germany ever had, that was directly and democratically elected by the people. All the others were monarchs, dictators, elected by the parliament or commisioned. It is a funnny fact considering that this honor goes to a man like Hindenburg who was not neccessarily against democracy but also not really in favor of it.
I actually wanted to write this to you before you make the "who did what in WW1" on Hindenburg. Unfortunately I forgot it somehow... So it didn't make it.
Happy 175th birthday to Paul von Hindenburg! We will never forget you!
Yeah, that Hindenburg is a pretty cool guy. He defeated Hitler before it was cool and doesn't afraid of anything.
I was referring to beating him in the 1932 election. Of course, it didn't last, but still.
disconcerting profile pic. no offence.
About time we had a special on Big Boss
Fun fact: During the Austro-Prussian war of 1866 Hindenburg became quite well acquainted with the geography of northeastern Bohemia, knowing among other things that there was a town called Broumov (back then known by its German name "Braunau"). And 60 years later he relentlessly trolled Hilter by calling him "the Czech corporal" despite knowing very well that Hitler was born in a completely different Braunau, the austrian Braunau am Inn. Since Hitler has already been peeved by the way "Reich" Germans looked down their noses at his austrian ancestry and since he hated Czechs, he didn't take this trolling well.
😂
Hindenburg: “Am ready”
Russians: “Why do I hear boss music?”
I see parallels between the awesome military duos of Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson, and Hindenburg and Ludendorff. Both men complimented each other, and were great pairs of generals!
These are great videos, Indy! Thank you!
5:12 Thank you for your fair analysis of the merits of Hindenburg and Ludendorff.
So Ludendorff was the architect and creator of the victory at Tannenberg, but Hindenburg gets the full glory. I would call it a good team work between laborer and leader, between production and management/marketing, between intelligence and charisma.
what a Legend, "am ready"

"Am ready" sounds like such a modern thing. I've definitely said something like that when my friends were on their way to pick me up
Funny how Prussia's highest military honor had a French name.
Nonamearisto yeah first time hearing it made me confused thinking why are French giving medals to Germans.
Steve Kaczynski -I always wondered why the medal is called "Pour Le Merite". That soubds awfully French for the Prussians
there is a german docu drama about frederick where he speaks french with his courtiers
Fantastic episode, well done Indy and gang
Can not imagine this series sans Indy...
Max Hoffman didn't think much of him. Touring the battlefield of Tannenberg he was know to point out various sites saying "here is where the Field Marshall slept before the battle, here is where he slept after the battle, here is where he slept during the battle."
Great episode! Had been waiting for it. Thanks Great War.
Excellent analysis.
Thank you for this!
Indy and TGW team make my dreams come true 3 times a week! 😘
Thank you! I asked for this!
I've been waiting for this episode for a loooooooong time
4:01 Incase you want to know what's written on the post card "On this stone the Russian waves shall break!"
NEIN NEIN NEIN NEIN!
That translation is not perfectly correct and thus unacceptable for a German:
"On this stone the Russian wave shall break" would be correct.
Because "Russenwelle" is one of these funny German combined words like Streifenwagenpolizist (police-car + policeman, describing a policeman who´s job it is to be on the beat with his car)
Now "Welle" is the singular for Wave and even though "Russen" =Russians, plural or "Russe", the last word determines whether it is singular or plural.
For a plural it would have been "An diesem Stein sollen sich die Russenwellen brechen", then the translation would be correct.
Now the funny thing is you can string as many words together as you like, leading to some really fun stuff like: Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz (Yes, this is officially a word, I´ll give you a hint about it, it´s singular, the first word is "beef" and the last word is "law" but I am not telling you what it is about)
Am ready
To warm my heart...
Excellent Indy!
Do a bio on Marshal Mannerheim! Awesome channel! Greetings from Finland!
Great episode
"Am ready" is one of the memest quotes from history i've ever seen.
I notice some caltrops on your desk there Indy. Those things are neat!!!
von Hindenburg and Ludendorff are probably the best pair Germany had
Thanks !
A great man !
Hindenburgs impact in germany was so big that even my grandpa (age 78) still knows a poemlike song about him!
Btw. i've told my grandpa to grow a mustache, he would look like hindenburg then!
After the great war will you progress to WW2? cause I really love your work and I think Im not the only one interested
That was a great episode not that the others are bad just this was a great one Keep on Going :)
Awesome video!
Amazing work! Congratulations!
I just would like to add that Hindenburg was also a direct descendant of Mantin Luther. Truly, he was basically German's spirit given flesh.
Always Hindenburg and Ludendorff - and they forget Max Hoffman, the real hero of Tannenberg.
He was the chief of staff under von Prittwitz who after Prittwitz was relieved, planned the attack and sent the divisions in motion - before H & L came and took charge - and credit for the battle.
Max Hoffman did end up as chief of staff of all Russian front armies.
He was a bit bitter to be forgotten at Tannenberg - he said later,"See - this is where Hindenburg slept before the battle, this is where Hindenburg slept after the battle, and this is where Hindenburg slept during the battle."
After Tannenberg many Generals claimed they came up with the concept of victory. Hindenburg replied "How great that we did win Tannenberg now we have so many heroes who made it possible. If we´d lost Tannenberg, I´d probably would have been the only one who had lost...
The Dynamic duo: Hinderberg and Ludendorf.
Imagine a battle... Where Napoleon and Hindenburg live at the same time period... fighting each other with the same Forces on Open Field. I would DIE to see this.
You probably would if you if you got in middle.
Maybe make a special about the different navies of the Great War
Hey Indy! I'm a huge fan of the show. For the next 'Out of the Trenches' video, my question is were soldiers given permission to take their equipment back home after service? Thanks!
Cor blimey! I thought Graham Chapman is holding us lesson from history! Joking! Really well done, dear sir!
I really hope that once the channel wraps in November of next year that Indy and the team work hard and get ready by March of 2019 so that they may create and promote the sequel channel for WW2 and in the downtime do as much research as possible.
I know that WW2 didn't officially start until September but theres a lot of stuff that happened in March 1939 that lead up to WW2 and theres a lot of other stuff that happened in the preceeding years that needs to be covered before the invasion of Poland and the war starting in earnest
that move with your hand when you said "all of this is extremely complicated and way outside the scope of this channel" gives me the impression that you really don't want to do it!!! But you really should!!! I want to see WW2 done by Indy Nidell team!! It will be really really really cool!!!!
It´s kind of fun, I am reading a book on leadership as I saw this.
Hi Indy & team! I Love your show! I'm a History enthusiast and I'm from latinamerica to! and I was wondering what was the efect of the great war over south America between 1914 to 1918?
as I mention, great work whit the show. greetings from Chile
hi Indy and gang! thanks for helping my history test with the existence of this channel. I want to know does the life of ww1 German submarine crews looks like the ww2 submarine crews? and thank you one more time for helping my history test!
He commanded true respect from his military and people.

"Am Ready"
"Am ready"
love how is said living legend....
I must say that the results of the Hindenberg programme are hotly debated to this day. some credit it with boosting production. Others suggest that this was due to orders placed earlier in the war catching up and that the economic chaos and mismanagement of resources by Hindenberg and OHL stifled the potential production. its a complex issue well worth reading up on. (books like the Silent dictatorship or Ring of Steel being the most respected works in academia from what I've heard)
Sounds a bit like the same debate that goes on about production and efficiency of German production in WW2.
who is debating it
Another interesting thing about him: he was a direct descendant of Martin Luther.
Medafets Are you serious ?
Of another Martin Luther, not MLK lol
Wait really?

That name is dope. I love it :D
Indy and Team, would there ever be a chance of releasing episodes as just audio for patrons?
That way they can be listened to on the go.
The Hero of Tannenberg, outmanouvred by a _"Bohemian Corporal"_...
V. Athanasiou he wasnt out manuveared he flat out died
Alistair Shaw He appointed Hitler as Chancellor, even if the Nazis still hadn't absolute majority, and he signed the Enabling Act before his death, so...
Never really got why Hitler was referred to as a Bohemian Corporal. His lifestyle perhaps?
The Iron Historian he was born in bohemia i think
Well, I mentioned his lifestyle because before Hitler entered the German army in WWI he lived what is often known as a 'Bohemian life': an aspiring artist who lived a penniless, drifting existence. I'm not sure if that is the reason though.
