Japan's participation in World War 1 is an often overlooked part of their history - even in Japan itself. Their service as one of the members of the Entente marked the climax of a development that started with the Meiji Restoration, a way out of isolation and into the global alliance system. This brought Japan more power and was also very lucrative. And after fighting in the Pacific Theatre of World War 1, the Siege of Tsingtao and contributing the Japanese Navy to the war effort, Japan had a seat at the table of the Versailles peace negotiations.

Godzilla first gained distinction during the UN intervention in the Korean War. His valiant stand at the Battle of Pyongyang gave UN forces the crucial time needed to retreat in the face of the Chinese invasion. For this he was given Japan's highest honors.

"One of the" not "the" : How many people know that Portugal, Montenegro, Romania or Greece fought in the war ? The Balkan front is always overlooked, Belgium is forgotten and even major nations like Russia, France, Serbia or Austria-Hungary often saw their contribution belittled or entirely put aside by some.

A representative of the Japanese navy was at the centenary commemoration of the ANZAC fleet leaving Australia from Albany; the Japanese navy provided assistance in escorting the ANZAC fleet. Kind of funny when you consider they were bitter hated enemies in WW2.
Bill wurtz's History of Japan, Feature History's Meiji's Reformation, and now this special, somehow happenned to be videos I watched one after the other in the same hour. They complement each other very well
The Japanese cruiser Ibuki was assisting the escort of transports carrying the first ANZAC's from Australia and New Zealand on their way to the Middle East , when the alert was put to the group that the SMS Emden was at the Cocos Islands. HMAS Sydney was dispatched to intercept and it took some convincing to stop the Ibuki from tagging along for the fight.

It would have been Japan's first naval combat of the war against a very challenging elusive foe that had been the scourge of the Indian Ocean, they escorted Australian and NZ troops to the Middle East (something many Aussies and Kiwi's aren't aware of). Some 17 years later those same countries were at war. The spirit of the Ibuki crew in wanting to take on the Emden then in zealously guarding the convoy has been commemorated in RAN history since. This segment was about the Japanese involvement in WW1, and wasn't mentioned in the segment.
Its really amazing how you can see the sowing of seeds that led to Japanese action in WWII decades beforehand.

Excellent overview of the situation in Japan during those decades. Being an ardent student of Japanese history I was positively surprised that you used the term "genro".

Japan established themselves as a world power in the Russo-Japanese War. WWI gave them an excuse to step up and flex their muscles. After the war, they were awarded much of Germany's Pacific possessions, many of which proved to be very valuable and strategically located.
Interesting side note here:
Montenegro declared war on Japan in 1905, being ally with Imperial Russia. They were in stalemate untill Montenegro regain independence in 2006 when two nations singed peace treaty.
Also, Montenegrin soldier Lesko Sajacic fought with Japanese samurai in melee combat (it probably wasn't samurai in classic terms).
And war of 1905 is pictured in montenegrin epic poetry.

At the Versailles conference the Japanese representative was made to speak to the Australian prime minister Billy "Digger" Hughes, and told to try to convince him to accept Japanese claims. This was a form of snub as Mr Hughes was really quite racist and cantankerous: basically the Allied powers got the Australian prime minster to tell the Japanese to get lost. This can be seen in the SBS Australia documentary Immigration Nation.

banzai charges are only the Japanease Version of Mass Charges of Infanterie, which were basically the main tactic in WW1 until Stormtroopertype units came into play
Weren't technically all bayonet charges Banzai charges? Sure the Brits, french, and others didn't scream banzai but the tactics are the same.
What's a Bananazai charge? About a buck a pound I'm guessing.

For me the most interesting aspect to Japan's role in the First World War was how WELL it treated its POWs. The Japanese basic treated the POWs like unexpected guests and bent over backwards to make them feel at home. In fact they treated the Germans so well, that many German POWs opted to stay in Japan after the war.
This of course was completely opposite to how the Japanese treated POWs in the Second World War. The how and why of this attitudinal change really shows the shift in thought that took place within Japan during the 20s and 30s.

Hey Indy, I recently rewatched the video you made about my country, Canada, and I seen that you talked about my province of Newfoundland a very small bit . of course back then it was its own colony and or country, but could you make a video about Newfoundland and the Newfoundland regiment during the war. I already know a whole lot because we have a whole chapter about them in grade 9 social studies this is kind of a request to teach other viewers. I hope I'm not bothering you with this. p.s. love the show, keep up the great war work.

I can see why Japan would be a great ally. They have enough hentai in storage to obliterate any hostile army.
If they only had the planes to drop magazines on the enemy, then they could just march in while they masturbate.
On the other hand they are also very susceptible to it. If the first strike isn't fatal their opponents may collect the samples, copy them and then throw them back to their soldiers. It'd be similar to MAD.

Japan proceeds to get screwed in the Paris Conference and Washington Naval Treaty, leading them to side with Germany against their former allies. Good job Europe.
It was the US which forced the abandonment of the UK/Japanese Naval Treaty and then imposed an oil
embargo which left the Japanese With the choice of fight or abject surrender.
Alec Blunden The embargo was imposed due to rampant Japanese imperialism in China and Southeast Asia, which was characterized by brutality. The US didn’t want to just sit there and watch while supporting the brutalizer.

Potential question for Out of the Trenches. Given their infamous treatment of POWs in WWII, I wonder if Indy could talk about how the Japanese treated the German POWs captured at Qingdao?
Good question, the answer will surprise you (probably).
The Germans were treated surprisingly well, almost like guests in small rural communities. The POWs taught local Japanese how to make breads and started the tradition of playing & participating in the choirs of Beethoven ‘s 9th symphony in December. I watched a Japanese tv documentary where descendants of German POWs and Japanese villagers who took care of them formed lasting friendship - a very nice story.

The still photograph at around 2:45 most likely does not depict a scene in Japan. The distinctive headwear and white-cloth clothing suggest it was likely taken in Korea. Please check your sources.
