Lyrics
And it's run for the roses as fast as you can
Your fate is delivered, your moment's at hand
It's the chance of a lifetime in a lifetime of chance
And it's high time you joined in the dance
It's high time you joined in the dance

Concur. Very intelligent comments , observations on the state of life. A class act personally & musically. RIP Dan...
One of the best songwriter and musicians ever!!!
You are SOOO missed, Dan.
So ironic! I've never seen so many men, true men with hearts LOVE what Dan Fogelberg gave us by example. He was full blown masculine and full blown sensitive man!
I am proud to say, love you my man. My hero. I sure miss you my brother!!! Your music lives in our hearts.
Will never prepare you for what lies ahead..
Great musician but a better man! God blessed you Dan!
He sang at my wedding and dedicated this song. I choked up
Well you were extremely lucky to have him sing for you two kudos
Ahh.. my memory of Secretariat running for the roses. What a beautiful sight!
And how about his Belmont win 31 lengths.
Triple Crown Winner!! Secretariat had a larger heart and this is why he was such a fantastic racer! Born and bred in Virginia!
I can still see Secretarial rounding the last curve. It was like he hit the afterburners.
Legend ✨🌟⭐✨✨
Before my husband died he would listen to this over and over while he cleaned his car. I can still see him out there
This song always makes me cry when I listen to it. But a good cry…
So do I😢
Hugs ❤️
Hey dudes, get checked out for prostate cancer. His death has always been very emotional for me.

¡ Muchas gracias Dan por todo siempre !
I think he passed at 56, and so did Patrick Swayze, i was at work when i heard over the radio, we all stood quietly and took in the news, as if there was a respect that we all simultaneously paid for such s great artist🎶🎵🎼🌠🔥🎸🙏🇺🇸🌎🌍
Today is the day yes it is derby day and this year like every Other year the first thing everybody does is listen to this song this song is what starts off the Kentucky Derby thank you for writing this beautiful song. It brings a magical touch to What was already a beautiful day
I love him so much. And I loved how his voice aged like a fine wine. He was SO great live. ❤
Amazing, beautiful, excellent, lovely ❤
My deepest heartfelt sympathy for your loss I hope you're hanging in there as well as you can and finding some smiles along with the tears.
Horses are the best. Raised with them Completely understand Dans respect, admiration for these highly brainy yet highly human bonded animals...
whos still watching this in 2021.. i listen to this song 20x..
I could not even count the times ive listened to this song, and it still gives me goose bumps, mostly the deliverer i believe, a true gifted singer songwriter
I have long loved horses. Yet, none worthy of an event as this derby; or, others. It was just about the recognition that this pony was special. It wasn’t easy. They kick, bite, throw you off. Yet, you truly love them and do your best for their wellbeing. Absolutely!
I cry every time I hear this it touches my spirit. He went like he lived quietly and down to earth. Lovely voice, lovely man RIP. Hope you are singing for the leader of the band!
One of the greatest songs ever
Love this song!!
He was a decent painter too..he did the art for many of his albums
I'm a lucky girl! I saw him twice in Concert! I was 15 & 18. I had the biggest crush on him. He was a beautiful soul.
One of the best out there. So sad the Rock and Roll HOF doesn't agree.
There idiots!
Are you serious? He should have been there before most of the yahoos in there and certainly before he passed. Loved DF.
@@karenlewismoore8687 What do you mean am I serious? I agree with you.
I was so fortunate to have attended a concert of Dan Fogelberg back in about 1982 in Minneapolis, MN. It was just he and his acoustic guitar, no back up. The auditorium resounded with sounds as though there were an entire symphony performing with him. He gave a PERFECT performance and he knew it! At the end of the concert, he lept and held up his guitar. He was so pleased and so enjoyed the audience and we enjoyed him! We could not get enough! Oh, how I love his music
Yes, my husband and I saw him in Macon,, Georgia around 1994. We were amazed by him playing solo. One of the best entertainers I ever saw.
I was fortunate to see him not long before he died at a local small venue. Me and my best friend who had loved him and his music all our lives. We sat in the front row. He was just by himself, so personable and performed so beautifully.
@@ilenecastaldo600 That’s so awesome! I saw him twice in concert in Nashville……I wish there would have been an opportunity to meet him and tell him how much I loved his music! Here I am at age 61, and still love his music so much! ❤️
Wow! I should have invested the time and money to seek out him and other great artists while they were performing.
Life goes by so fast!
I'm glad you had that experience!
How wonderful ❤
This song and "Leader of the Band" are two of my favorite songs from Dan Fogelberg. "Longer" was my first! Thank you Dan Fogelberg! RIP!
i have always loved his songs. I have been watching him on UA-cam lately. I am blown awqy.
One of the best talented musicians with song writing. vocalistic, passions that could put his piano and guitar skills and passion into a song like no other. He left us to early because I wanted more. THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC THAT YOU GAVE US DAN.
I saw him in concert in 1977, opening for the Eagles on their Hotel Californis tour. He came out on stage by himself, no band, just him and a guitar and piano, for close to an hour. I was blown away by him then, and I am now.
Gone too soon. RIP, you are missed.
You live forever in our hearts and will continue to do so as we share your timeless music with generations to come. ~ Ever on! >
Forever beautiful this song in the majesty of the horse in his chance 🌹🐎
I love him so much. And I loved how his voice aged like a fine wine. He was SO great live. ❤🙏🏽💔
Beautiful Classic Song! Wonderful Video! Dan Fogelberg was taken to Heaven too soon! Dan Fogelberg Wrote Composed and played the keyboard for this Song! I was born in the late fall of 1978 in Central Kentucky and grew up in Northern Kentucky!
Hell, NO! Didn’t, like me, killed most of us. Yet, I’m a very wise, mare. Absolutely!
How have I never heard this song?
The melody alone is enough to make me cry. It's so beautiful. As far the lyrics, well they're so rich and heartfelt, poetic and loving. His songs remind me of another great singer/songwriter, John Denver.
Beautiful Song ❤
Dan Ran For The Roses music wise and he won the Triple Crown. Good job Dan. See Ya in the light.
It was playing in my head during the moment I won Best in Show with a dog I had bred and shown MYSELF!
The most beautiful melodies, sung by the purest of voices. Sublime ❤
Love my wife she loves the derby one of the derby song that will never die thank you Dan fogleberg wonderful song for us Kentuckians love you man
A Great Classic! Little known.
I Saw Dan in mid 90s One of the Greatest Concerts
Many people may not know that on May 3rd 1980, when this song was introduced, the winner of the Kentucky Derby was a mare, Genuine Risk... the long shot and one of only three mares to ever win the "Roses". As soon as I heard the song I knew she would win, and would have bet the house on it. Thank you, Magic Dan!😘
This song hits me on so many levels. Always has. Today, especially when a former boss has another chance to win. GO Resilience and GL Bill Mott!
I love this song. It makes me so homesick. I usually cry. When I was young we lived on a race horse farm and I got to see this song in real life in Kentucky. Thank you for this wonderful song. Jean
One of my favorite singers. RIP Dan. Gone too soon ❤😢
I still remember sitting cross legged on the floor, watching as the song premiered on tv - back when a tv was in a big wooden box. on the floor. Lovely song!
Just let it all go and run for the roses!
What an incredibly gifted artist. One of a kind. I sure miss him. I saw him live several times
at Humphrey's By The Bay here in San Diego and I cherish those memories. I send my thoughts
and love to all his family and friends, especially his wife. 🙏❤☮
Wife and I got to see Dan at a 1 man show like this video at the Paramount in Seattle. What I thought was surreal was EVERYONE there knew his songs and everyone was singing right along. He is missed
When I hear this song it makes me proud and glad to say hey I live in western Kentucky. Thank you dan,we miss you
I saw Dan in Aspen CO and have always been sad he was so unknown...he wrote some of the most beautiful songs ever....Changing Horses

I believe Dan will return with all the others soon! Hold the line patriots!
Wonderful song , can't wait to see Dan in heaven
We played this song at my dad's funeral a year ago April.26th 2017. My daddy loved horses so much and taught my 3 boys everything he knew about this beautiful animal, until cancer took him from us. But I have no doubt there are horses in heaven for ole cowboys to ride. Rip Dad and Mr Fogelberg
I'm so sorry for your loss, only this is very beautiful songs to always remember them. RIP respectfully, thank you for sharing such a personal memory 😔
i am an old horse trainer and this is my life , horse is the most gracios animal there is , this will be platyed at my pasing , god bless
I’m sorry for your loss. We love you!
Being For Kentucky, This Means So Much!!
Been a fan of DF FOR YEARS. It actually started YEARS ago in USAF Tech School when I heard "Part Of The PLan" . I found it INSPIRING because I still had a lot of growing up to do, gain confidence & stand up to any BS being thrown at me ; i.e., "grow a pair". I believe due to the circumstances I was in at the time that "Part Of The PLan" will forever remain my personal "LIFE" favorite.
Leader of the band is touching, oh so deep, and I can tell what it means to Dan to have written/perf'd it for his Dad. It must have taken A LOT of NERVE/ bravery, to perform a song like that & not lose it.
I am guilty of not doing the parts Dan sang about... regretting it later.
But for me, the song that stabs me in the heart & really amplifies what Dan sang about is "Living Years" by Mike & The Mechanics.
And to complete the QUADRANGLE of Father-Son songs, I will add "Father & Son " by Cat Stevens (as he was known then) and then, drumroll please,
the infamous (?) "Cats In The Cradle". Talk about BITING SARCASM.CYNICISM, eh?
A sad, empty world now that Dan & Harry aren't with us any longer. OUTSTANDING storytellers/poets.
Such a poignant great song for horses as well as us mere mortals. ❤❤❤❤
Best Derby song ever!
Absolutely! It takes good influences from your beginnings to take care, instruct, illustrate . Little beings are like sponges. They absorbs so much in their early years. It takes good relationships, communities that are engaged. The very Best! These efforts should never be forgotten as a baby, born is just that… a blank slate.
I love horses too, my late mom had one in Italy when she was growing up prior WWII!
Love you dan
Such a beautiful, beautiful song! I never knew that it was played on ABC prior to the running of the Kentucky Derby. So appropriate! Dan knew how to write lyrics, incredible, heart-warming lyrics! This is one of his amazing songs. What a great composer and lyricist he was. I never can hear enough of his music which remains alive today!
Grew up listening to The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Poco and Dan Fogelberg. He's up there with the best, whichever meaning you would like to take from it.
You have excellent taste in music, my friend! Would add CSN as well.
Ricky Nelson was one of the first singers (while on Ozzie and Harriet Show) that first got me loving music.
Now 70, still love these folk. Boy, did Linda have some pipes.
I love this song of Dan Fogelberg. It hits my innermost soul I could shed a tear. thanks Dan for such a wonderful music. You'll be miss forever.
Incredible passion for singing. A lot of artist just sing their songs but with very little gusto. Dan at least from all I can tell from the various yt videos I have seen Dan always seemed to give his live and soul to every song performed. We will never know if his light would have still shone through his interaction with an audience. Unfortunately I never availed myself the pleasure to see him perform live. We just do not know what is missing in our lives until the light bearer has passed. Thanks to the myriad of fans that have been able to share with us a glimpse at what he was able to do while his time here on earth.
James Russell ...aoh what I'd have given to go to one of his concerts today!!!
Oh, how greatly I agree! So very well stated, James Russell!
Nicely said!
Beautiful tribute to a beautiful man & soul. I never saw him. Love him and all his songs. Rest in Peace with my 38 yr old son who I just lost on April 22, 2023. 💔 🙏 😢
Even if it takes 3.52 years or so.
david, we got lucky
and the wind is with us. Thank u
m
The beautiful melody alone is enough to make my cry. Add those amazing words and you've got yourself a gem of a song.
Dan Fogelbergs melodies have a grace and clarity seldom heard in Poprock. Almost Baroque/ Classical in style and substance. As for his lyrics, well they're immaculately written, straight from the heart, soulful and tender. His voice was incredible rich too. Most surely one of THE finest singer/ songwriters ever. Run For The Roses may be my own personal Fogelberg song but frankly, his entire catalogue is close to flawless as it gets!
Well said Thomas !!
Finally saw Dan in ‘96. Great performer he was.
He was just an artist in every sense of the word......
A chance of a lifetime ane a lifetime of chance listening to
Dan Fogelberg's songs, year 2022
"REST IN PEACE!"
DAN FOGELBERG

On May 2, 1980
“Friday Night Live From the Kentucky Derby” for ABC
106th running of the Kentucky Derby. He premiered on the ABC network's the night before the run. He performed “Longer” “Face the Fire” & for first time
“Run for the Roses” This song was commissioned by ABC and Fogelberg stated that it was written in two days. This song has since been used as an unofficial theme for the Kentucky Derby. This song stands the test of time just like almost all of his songs. He will be inducted this year into the Illinois music hall of fame since he was from Peoria. Another reason he should be inducted posthumously into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Congratulations for those in this channel & ever attended the concert. ❤
I was lucky enough to see this voncert tour. Absolutely wonderful!
I was fortunate enough to see him live three times. Absolutely the very best times of my life.I will always love him, he was taken far too soon.
With you all the way. I too was fortunate to see Dan live three times. Very fortunate on the third time to meet him in person. A kind, generous, down right sexy man. I miss him every day.
Dan has lyrics that touch the heart and feeds the soul.
My favorite song! My Dad worked for ABC and was there for that Derby. I have a pin he brought me back and it's on my hat! Awesome song writer, singer, musician, simply amazing!
Such a beautiful tear jerker. ❤❤❤❤
I listened to your albums all through my 1st year of college in the dorms where I was a biochemistry major, barely 16 years old, suddenly in a culture of kids in a completely different place in life than I was.
My parents were divorcing and my father had just tried to commit suicide.
Yet somehow, here I was in one of the most challenging academic settings in the nation.
It was me who insisted I wasn't going to wait any more - I wanted to start my life as a scientist after a full life as a professional studio singer, TV actress, and composer/ arranger.
I just wanted to be a scientist and understand animals and life.
But I had never felt so alone.
I listened to this song every morning of that dark, confusing fall.
This song, and Changing Horses in the Middle of a Stream defined how I felt - the difficulty of the transition yet the inspiration of finally being allowed to chase my actual dreams.
That album got .e through what I bow know was clinical depression-- but we didn't talk about those things in those days.
No one even asked why I was never in class.
But I did study and go to labs so it was ok academically.
I found my footing and found my way and finally, like in this song, I had my chance to run for the roses and it was a spectacular experience. I got to live my dream of knowing wild creatures on a deep level, learning about physics, math, chemistry, and the secrets of life - biology and neuroethology.
I got the tools to seek out answers to my insatiable curiosity and that was my dream.
It's amazing what a song can do for a person- how you write it, put it out there, and people appropriate it to fit their own lives and be inspired by it.
I wish I had written to Dan Fogelberg and thanked him for his beautiful songs and lyrics, and for putting them out there.
I owe him a lot for those perfect and timely and universal songs, and for helping me to find my way through his music.
2021 And I play these over & over.
2022!!!
Thank you for the inspiration your music will live on on in the hearts of so many. A pleasure still RIP!
R.I.P. Dan. Thanks for all of your memorable music.
This song was sung to me as a lullaby when I was a baby. I suppose that when I heard for the second time, "You'll soon be a-growin' up strong", I believe I nowadays am still strong in heart and soul and mind for Dan since age 12. Thank you, Dan, for sharing this song. You're my inspiration. R.I.P.
Agree should be in Rock and Role Hall of Fame. Some say greatest US songwriter. Miss you Dan love Run for the Rose's before Derby Day.
A under appreciated artist
Happy birthday Dan Fogelberg! :)
Dan Fogelberg was several cuts above the your average successful singer/ songwriter. His melodies had a richness and beauty rarely found in Pop and his lyrics are warm, compassionate and insightful. Truly one of THE finest poprock artist ever! Oooooh, and his voice....simply marvellous!
Missing the songs he never got the chance to write , he went quietly
Bravo! Encore!
Apparently he was thinking of retiring from music and focusing on his art, I hate prostate cancer as it’s taken my dad and brother (both older than Dan but not by much). So we probably have got the best of his songs, and boy are they good! I just wish he could have lived the rest of his dreams. He was no age at all.
