This is hands down the best video I have seen for the Gigcaster 8. It is comprehensive and very informative without being overly complicated. Always best to hire a musician to explain things to other musicians. Well done sir!
I've been tinkering with the footswitch (the FA-GC) and the Gigcaster over the weekend, going into depth with the parameters the footswitch can access and if someone wanted to use this as a 'backing track playback' machine this is what I've learned. You get a bit more functionality if you don't use the 'PAD LINK' function. As the footswitch pedals can access many more 'A' functions than 'B-D' functions, what I wanted to do (namely, start tracks with the footswitch and turn the EFX on and off between tracks) can be achieved but with a reduced number of tracks. Since the GA-FC has 6 buttons I can access 32 tracks via 4 buttons and with a simple changeover of parameters can access the other 32 tracks which could be changed between sets. This is fine for what I want. So by setting the FA-GC to 'PAD LINK' off, you can set the individual GROUPS. Choose 'PEDAL 1' icon. Then select GROUP 'A' and set the CATEGORY to CH 2 and set the FUNCTION to 'EFFECT ON / OFF'. Then select GROUP 'B' and set the CATEGORY to 'SOUND PAD' and the FUNCTION to 'SOUND PAD 1'. With this setting, when you press PEDAL 1, you either start the track on SOUND PAD 1 and turn the EFX on CH2 ON, or pressing again stops the track and turns the EFX off. You rinse and repeat for the other three PEDALS (2-4) altering just the 'B' Group FUNCTION setting to SOUND PAD 2, SOUND PAD 3, or SOUND PAD 4. To change the BANKS of SOUNDPADS choose PEDAL 5, GROUP 'A' and set it to 'SOUND BANK UP'. This way, every time you press PEDAL 5 the SOUND PADS ascend to the next bank. A cool trick then is to hold PEDAL 5 down and it ascends to the last BANK (8), from which you can press single presses to access a particular BANK (say 5 presses to go to BANK 5). With a TRACK SHEET laid at the foot of the pedalboard, I can navigate to any of the 32 tracks on BANKS 1-8 on SOUND PADS 1-4. Likewise with a simple tweak (changing the 'B' Group FUNCTION in each PEDAL to SOUND PAD 5-8), the pedalboard can then navigate to the 32 tracks on SOUND PADS 5-8 through the BANKS 1-8. I've made a tracksheet as follows, where my SOUND PADS in each BANK all correspond to the same colour. PAD 1 = WHITE, PAD 2 = RED, PAD 3 = YELLOW, PAD 4 = GREEN, PAD 5 = ORANGE, PAD 6 = BLUE, PAD 7 = PURPLE, PAD 8 = PINK The NUMBER at the top is the PEDAL NUMBER and the number at the sides are the BANK: Changing the FUNCTION to SOUND PAD 5-8 you can then access the other 32 tracks, This suits our setup as I perform original tracks while my wife who is a classically trained soprano, performs covers. I hope that lot makes sense. I will do a UA-cam video when I get the time...and that's not even mentioning the jaw-dropping EFX on this thing which makes a live sound so easy to achieve.
Holy hell. I can't believe how well thought out is this piece. I was blown away even before you got to the footpedal option. They managed to stuff 2 tons of tech into a 5 pound bag.
TBH - their (notably) earlier incarnations, such as the BR-800 had some superior options for effects and mixing compared to its contenpories.. Used one for years, an excellent machine. The set-up via Linux was and is a major game changer for me... It made live work with a laptop running as backup audio device seamlessly a viable option... I always look at live work as a process of "problem reduction". If something can do what you need and want, without adding to the list if issues - it's a keeper. If it reduces problems, it's no longer a keeper - it's a necessity.
Well, I was going to ask some questions, but you answered them all! If I had watched every video on the internet about the Boss Gigcaster 8, I would never have got as much information as I have from your single video!
I can't believe how feature packed this is! Even if I'm not a musician, I want this! I currently have a Behringer x1204USB mixer that I use as an audio interface and I like to have ALL my sound devices connected to it so I can use my Sennheiser headphones for everything. I currently use a bluetooth receiver for my iPhone's audio, but I want to use my good mics for the calls as well and that currently is not possible with my mixer. I know it's possible with the Rodecaster but now that I see this Gigacaster, I will consider this one as well 😲
i´ve been using the gigcaster 5 (similar features without fisical pad and phone input) for all my gigs this summer doing an average of 4 a week so like 45 during the summer and it has been a game changer for my soun and features live incredible 0 problems whatsoever and incredible perfomance in general im super happy with it (awesome video btw greetings from spain)
Have a look at this one - ua-cam.com/video/OVHK_09ytIs/v-deo.htmlsi=ZmjBb_mBIDI035I_ And then this one - ua-cam.com/video/7DdTyChGN5c/v-deo.htmlsi=z0jP-VutCsnUnhZ7
4 number one hits my history Roland Boss 2480 VS yep I just mixed it in my ssl aws I miss the old Roland because I never had to do that in much in my Studio mixing
No worries. Great thing is, plug in a Micro SD card, make sure it’s on Multi-Track recording and then… just hit record. Easy. Then you can import the file into a DAW and your set! 👍🏻
Thanks for answering previous questions - another question. What is the output power (Wattage) - when connected to speakers. (I think we need a amplifier before connecting a speaker but just making sure.)
Can this be plugged directly into an iPhone or iPad using a USB-C lightning adapter? I am currently using a separate mixer and audio interface for my streaming app on my iPhone… I’m wondering if this device would do it all
I’m sure it would. I was able to do it with USB-C to USB-A and then had the camera connection kit and used it on my 15 with c-c so I don’t see why that wouldn’t work with the adapter. 👍🏻
The video I needed, the first bit was about me, I’ve been looking at the Rodecaster 2 for a while and when the Duo came out I started looking at that and it lead me to this!!! Thanks for describing me making me realize this is what I really need 😅
Glad I could help! Here’s me setting up and showing all the steps as if I’m at a gig. I hope it helps. ua-cam.com/video/7DdTyChGN5c/v-deo.htmlsi=u59od_INjnauePlr
Could you please explain how to set a particular guitar patch to a particular effects pad? When I go to the functions for an effect pad I can change the controls but I can’t choose which patch goes to that particular pad
Thanks 🙏 Any mic. It can handle 48v phantom power so normal mics for live or even studio / condenser mics as well. Best is to play with it with your mics to see if it’s right for you with the great VE effects from Boss. 👍🏻
I'd like to see a follow-up video showing the unit fully connected to the gear you'd do a livestream with.......maybe it would have to be in parts, with each section being 10 mins or so long? Thanks.
Very great video and well explain. but can we record any small section of audio and have a replay over 1 of the channel ? Or we need a sampler for that and then put the output to the input 1 of this mixer ... Thanks
JohnPaul, do you have a video explaining in detail (a step-by-step instruction) how to set up the Gigcaster 8 with the GA-FC EX pedal? If you have not recorded one, could you direct me to someone who has done it? My very specific question is this: how do I assign each switch to perform a given task -- let's say, I want to sing a song that has a part where I will be singing with the double-voice effect; then, I want to sing another part of the song doing vocal harmony (higher & lower). How exactly do I make each switch do that particular effect when I press it? I tried assigning the first switch (on the left) and it worked. I chose double-voice and the effect would go on or off as I pressed the switch. I tried to do the same with the second switch, with a different effect. It did not work, and it was somehow "hooked" to the first switch, meaning it would interfere with the operation of the first switch. I tried the third switch, and the same thing happened. I was not able to choose a different/independent effect for each switch. I am not a technically inclined person, and I feel that I have a Boeing 747 in front of me without clear instructions on how to fly it. At the same time, I've noticed that the documentation that came with both products is very poor, very superficial. I am having a very hard time trying to have fun with the two (Gigcaster 8 & the GA-FC EX pedal), and I am very frustrated. If you can help (or not), please let me know. Thank you for your attention. Claudio Lessa - in Winter Park, FL.
Hey Claudio 👋 I haven’t made a video for the foot controls but I’m thinking maybe I should make a step by step guide. Boss themselves did make a video about the GA-FC and the Gigcaster. I don’t know if you’ve already seen this one. Have a look.. but I think it’s time I made one as well. ua-cam.com/video/LYCZu1NpDJc/v-deo.htmlsi=ICrt1Gbz87xUYfdq
@@JohnPaulMusicUK Yes, JohnPaul, I have seen that video and other information, but it is all very superficial. The guy keeps playing with the buttons but he does not actually say press this, choose that, save this way, clicl here, etc. He is every enthusiastic to say that each button can accommodate four different functions at the same time... Great! But how does one actually accomplish that? As I said, I have a Boeing 747 parked in my studio without the keys to turn the engines and the instructions on how to fly the damn plane!... Yes, please make a video, do not assume we know any thing other that turn the equipment on and off. Make the video geared to all technically illiterate idiots like me who don't take things for granted and need to see what is done and how it is done step by step, please! All the best!
In the first 3 minutes there are a ton of inconsistencies with what you have already said or showed on screen. Recording is a 32 Bit, not 32b Float, for example. seems cool, but I'm not doing 20 min Triple check your info.
After a year, would you still suggest this? Seems like a great option for singer/songwriter. And a lot of fun to doodle around with! Great video and explanation of the versatility and features.
Cool!! Have a look at the Gigcaster Playlist. We’ve done quite a few things with it. Hope the videos help: ua-cam.com/play/PLO36LpORUSaaf6R1PaTwqR-WJxsIVLj6K.html&si=4Z4yM5gw9uNd8S9B
Can you send different channels to different headphone outs? Using this a a way to get more outputs Like if I’m a one man band sending channels from this mixer to front of house… or using the headphone outs as monitor outs…
This looks great, shows the way things are moving. However as a gigging musician myself it seems to to be guilty of what I historical term as 'Japanese watch syndrome' ie it does about a thousand different things when you really want a mixer to be simple, especially if you are holding a guitar and singing! . I have used a Zoom LiveTrak L-12 Mixer for years and incorporates 12 ins DAW connection, card connections and separate recording and 5 programmable Monitor / Headph outs etc etc. If I see something better I'll get it and although this looks amazing I think I'll stay where I am for the moment. Fair play though great review and looks an awesome bit of kit!
Two guitarists, using two microphones for singing in a live situation will take up the 4 channels. Can a smart keyboard player go through the auxiliary to add to the band?
I think you might need something bigger unless you want to put your 18 mics into a stereo mix into the Gigcaster. But then I suppose you're using 2 mixers. One for the drums and then one for everything else including talkback and computer interface.
Aww thanks 🙏 The faders are shaped quite nicely to contour your fingers but they are plastic. They are pretty sturdy to be honest and haven’t had any fall off yet! 🤣 If you wanna learn more about it, here’s a playlist with all the videos I’ve done. Couple of different scenarios here which are helpful: ua-cam.com/play/PLO36LpORUSaaf6R1PaTwqR-WJxsIVLj6K.html&si=r3Y26yTCgJlgrL9K
As a Metal guitarist who is using a GT-1000 core, first thing that comes to mind is, if there is a sufficient noise gate built in. Sufficient means, Threshold, Attack, Release and Ratio. The "noise reduction" of the GT-1000 sucks as it cannot be dialed in to react fast/tight enough, so I'm using a TC Sentry in front of it. Second thing is: is there a FX loop? And third... I assume that doesn't have MIDI capability? And fourth; does it have built in metronome / drum machine or something like that? And what I also wanna know; is that a metal enclosure because it certainly looks like plastic?!
That’s very interesting regarding the GT-1000 Threshold and attack etc.. obvs I’m not a metal player so was unaware. There isn’t a physical effects loop connection wise on the unit, no. There is midi but it’s more pressing CC numbers for the pads to do other things. No metronome No drum machine Enclosure is actually both - metal top and plastic bottom.
Correct but if you want to take full advantage of the 20in 14out, you need the Gigcaster software which is good. Have a look: ua-cam.com/video/OVHK_09ytIs/v-deo.htmlsi=fkatlI2fMioW32vk
Thank you so much. As you are a sound engineer ,please let me know: Can I ,as a pastor use Rode pro mic ,as hands free mic to address the congregation ;? Will such mics be free from inerfearce from other signals for that use ,or is it good only for use with video camera etc.? Akso ,can it's receiver be connected it to an amplifier without a mixer ? Is mixer essential to connect it to use as a public address system ?
No you can certainly use the rode pro mic (do you mean the new small square wireless pro with or the pro+ which sits on cameras?) either way, you would need the right cable to plug in but yes you certainly could. Signal wise, the wireless PRO run on a new series 4 2.4Ghz transmission system. There could be interference from anything else 2.4 but it’s rare. Yes you can plug it into an amplifier but just need the right cable and watch the volume. The nice thing about the Wireless Pro is that the receiver can also record too if you needed the recording for later on. I personally would use the Lav extraction so the transmitter is out of sight, clipped to your belt for example and the lav wire under your shirt. Hope that helps. This video is a UHF Version. It’s not the Rode but it’s kind of what your thinking: ua-cam.com/video/uvAYhZux5fo/v-deo.htmlsi=EFinpzGEJtOx-7OH
You could do that and MainStage has the ability to build what you want! (If it’s good enough for Marc Rebillet then hey! 🤣) Answering your question - wildly different.
Glad it was helpful! - here are the other videos I’ve done with the Gigcaster. Hope they help. ua-cam.com/play/PLO36LpORUSaaf6R1PaTwqR-WJxsIVLj6K.html&si=KRe-YgmUaTHZa0UC
Does anyone know if this thing has direct mic monitoring? i.e. I'd want all the effects to be applied to the mic and sent out through the USB output, but I want a complete dry vocal in my headphones, finding it difficult to establish which mixers support this
It’s a great question and I’ve looked through all the manuals (reference and Parameter guide for the GS8) and can’t seem see an option to have it like that. ☹️ it’s a direct out from the channels / main. You can’t eq it differently but it he effects will still be there. The other downside of the GS8 at the moment is that you can’t have different mixes for different headphones. It’s a universal mix for all.
I wish there was a version where all the inputs/channels are like the first 4. 4 physical inputs is pretty limiting. I am never going to use the channel for bluetooth lol
@@JohnPaulMusicUK cheers it's a pity it only has 4 audio inputs kinda weird the 20 audio interface part where on earth are they all coming from I assume it's in that playlist somewhere. Thanks again. I was looking at the Mackie creator which looks amazing but this does a bunch of different things
Can this unit punch in an overdub to the final recording. I need the ability to compile intro and outro's to my podcast and need the ability to edit/overdub the final recording.
Looks good but needs more inputs as two speakers two microphones and then you would need drums guitars and a base but it’s only got 4 inputs you would need at lease 8-10 inputs yea
Wow! is all to say. Great product review John. This unit is fantastic and very impressive, but I bet the price is impressing on your pocket as well. Thanks.
Well.. it’s an investment. If you think of getting everything separately, then it would cost more and you would probably need more cables and dongles etc. 😛 so it’s gonna pay for itself in simplicity and time.
This thing is so cool, it looks like it has volume for four separate sets of headphones, but can you have a separate mix in each of the headphones, or at least between the headphones and the usb out for example? If you're live streaming, for example, and you're singing and playing guitar, I usually want the mix the audience hears to be a little bit different than what I want to hear in my own headphones (I usually want more of my own vocals in my ears, and this goes double if I'm mixing in other instruments like if I was with a band or something). I'm guessing that's probably not possible with this, but still, this thing is amazing for an all-in-one device, the effects alone are really cool, and for like podcasting or just as a small portable solution for solo gigs or whatever, I can see this being really useful for certain people. :)
Can you do a video of the other features? - playback of sdcard - full parameters overview - using as audio interface I basically am most interested in seeing how to playback from SD card (music tracks) Does it allow that?
The idea is to capture the audio with this Gigcaster which it can grab as a stereo mix or as separate channels. When you playback, you are best putting that into a DAW to grab all the channels to mix there. 👍🏻 Watch this space for more videos. Coming soon…
I would love to see more tutorial video's with the Gigcaster: - How you set it up for your live gigs to livestream? [Thats how I'll be using it]. - How you set up a foot pedal to change guitar and vocal FX on the fly. Any help would be greatly appreciated. THANKS 😀👍
Noted. 👍🏻 Watch this space. 👍🏻 In the meantime I actually used it for a gig last night. Plugged my loop setup in, and a separate talking mic. Connected my iPad via Bluetooth for a playlist inbetween sets, recorded it all on the SD card and also plugged my phone into the USB to live stream it all! Brillaint! Here you go: C.A.L.M Charity Gig - Liberty Bell Coffee House ua-cam.com/users/live5XqnCF1HFxA?feature=share
@@JohnPaulMusicUK That's fantastic JP. Thats exactly what I want to do for my all my gigs in the future. Looking forward to your video's on this. Cheers 👍😀
Brilliant review and I'm only half-way through. I had to say, 'Diamond Crunch' EFX sounded great on your electro-acoustic....would suit lots of songs. Back to the video....
i take it, you can multi-track record on it? Like basically, stick the drums down in 1-2 tracks, a base line, and vocals. Yeah, I've been looking at the tascam L12, or one Zoom H8 (or any hand held 32 bit float recorder), as a solution for playing a few instruments, and jamming/rehearsing etc ----- but this looks like a serious 3rd option.
Can I select multiple or even one channel to play in the head phones with the fader being down basically as almost a cue or split cue so I can hear what is playing in a track before brining it up into the main mix output
You've done an amazing job with this review. I'm getting into pre production for a community radio station where I will need to send them a 50 minute WAV or high quality MP3 file for broadcast. I've had my eye on the Road caster 11 and Mackie DLZ but I really like this because I'm a musician who could use this for gigs. How does this compare to the Road Caster in terms of strictly using it for my radio pre production work and recording multiple guests with multiple headphones and easily recording interviews using my phone etc etc? Keep up the great work.
For what you want it for it’s great. You can pull in a phone call, you can have sound pads, multiple people etc and record it all in multitrack mode so it’s all separated for mixing later or all as a stereo feed ready to send out in glorious 32-bit. Only issue really is the headphone mix is the same on all 4 outputs. Can’t change it’ll the feed but I hope they update this. Maybe they can’t. Dunno.
Excellent video !! Can you do a video of how to connect it to Logic Pro so you can mix / record the separate channels live or from the sd card after you’ve recorded please ? I brought one of these a week ago and haven’t sussed out how to connect it to logic yet. I record my band at Rehersal and it would be handy to mix it better later on a DAW. I use the front input for v drums. It works well.
Hi, great video. Do the 4 headphone outs have their own individual mix? EG, Headphone out 1, for the bass player with heaps of bass guitar, a little vocal and backing track, headphone out 2 for the singer, with no bass guitar but with heaps of backing track from your phone, etc?
Thank you so much for this thorough review! I can see from the comments below that you've successfully connected the USB-C to your iPhone. Awesome! That's one big question answered. The second is this: Have you used the "mix minus" feature with your iPhone? Presumably this will work the same as a laptop...? Thanks!
Yeah just remember to use the camera connection kit for iPhone’s. Not used it yet - gonna be testing it so I’ll keep you informed. Yes it’s meant to work in the same way. 👍🏻
Great video, I use backing tracks from my phone when gigging, can you set it to recognise the vocal key for harmonies from the backing track? Many thanks if you can check that out
hello, which powerbank do you use? I have tried several and each time I get the “insufficient power” message. thank you for your help and for your great videos!
This is awesome dude im getting this i have the boss br 800 but wow this giga caster is exactly what i need.. can i hook it up to reg studio monitors instead of headphones? Can i jam along to backing tracks also thAnk you for yer time yer great
Certainly. Couple of ways to do it. There is a dedicated AUX input on the front, or you can use Bluetooth and just Bluetooth a phone or tablet.. or plug in via usb-c. And each one has its own fader. Easy. 👍🏻
thanks i found one the new THE NEW RODE STREAMER X looks like something i can use as its more versatile i have subscribed to your channel and gave thumbs up as it was good knowledge have a good day @@JohnPaulMusicUK
I just subscribed and hopefully you are one step close to hitting that 30k mark, thanks to the music repo lady. I own the Tascam Mixcast 4 they seem like cousins, your thoughts?
Hey 👋 Thanks for the sub. Yeah looking at the Tascam, they look very similar.. even the fader options look the same. The recording is 24bit on the Tascam, the Gigcaster is 32 bit. The GigCaster also leans on Boss’ high heritage of effects (guitar and vocal effects). There are pros and cons to both. 👍
But But it dosent have a drum machine or platform ? i can see wair this would be a great practice tool corect to capture your own practicing guitar and vocals .... what do you think for a just the average joe in the bace ment learning an practicing im sorry for the confusing questions ... im looking for something to practice and get better and record my progress in guitar pratice >> any idears thank you great video
What about a loop pedal? They have drums on and you can record yourself and even play and overdub on the top. Then you could extract that loop into a computer if you really like it to make it into a song? I would have a look at something like the Boss RC-500. Ir even the RC-600 if you want to go all out! Check this out: ua-cam.com/play/PLO36LpORUSaa2hQEKtoW-FyuhOBCwlfRs.html&si=ORzxzjcT0YB3UMte Alternatively you could go the Loopy Pro way if you have an iPad. - ua-cam.com/play/PLO36LpORUSaYsDmWvl2tqZr3flIVH2ffl.html&si=t6Ybq3XIfIO87oHk But for creativity and to play stuff back instantly, I would say a loop pedal. 👍🏻
it has 4 combi jacks and you can use the aux in for a stereo in - depends if you need more than 6 physical inputs - have a look at this: ua-cam.com/video/AeTBkQ1ask4/v-deo.htmlsi=OudKDyg3rZQCjfZM
Hi JP. Great video. Thanks. I was wondering how you would set this up for a live gig with your boss rc 600. I would think you would want to separate the vocal channel and the guitar channel going into the looper
Hi John, hope your day is going well I received the gigcaster 8, I tried to connect to my UA sound card, but no sound coming out😢 Should I connect both right and left out with mono jacks? And if you have a video how to connect the Gigcaster to sound card or mixer, please share it with me Appreciate your help
Wait… your trying to connect the Gigcaster 8 to a UA? Why? The Gigcaster is an audio interface. Just plug it DIRECTLY into your computer with the USB output and use the Gigcaster software and drivers.
thx! is it possible to sidechain the channels? I'm looking for a mixer for techno-live-setup with drummachine (Kick/Percussion/Hats etc.), Basssynth, Synth for Pads/Strings etc. and Sampler for FX/Drones and i have to handle kick-/bass frequencies in first line. thank u in advance
Very cool... Does it have an aux or monitor output in addition to front of house? I need separate FOH and IEM outputs (using tracks with cues running out through the the in ear monitors only)
@ does this work for stereo? If I plugin in R/L outputs from keyboard into input 1 and 2 on GC8. Would only one channel have guitar effects or is there a stereo linking feature?
Can you do loopback mixing as in… Does the device present multiple USB outputs to the computer that can be assigned to multiple fader channels for mixing, before sending back into the computer?
Hi John Paul. Thank you for the video. I have two doubts. Can we control the mixer with an iPad using their software via Bluetooth (remotely)? The headphone inputs works as in-ear ports for live gigs?
Could you do a video with the gigcaster connected to an iPad running Loopy Pro and get Loopy to send patch changes to the effects both vocal and guitar? Great unit and great video thanks,
Okay, I do have a question for you. (Knew you'd have the best first review on this machine!) I got the GigCaster 8 for the complete suite, as you said. My use purpose for it is primarily Jamulus, live, real-time online jamming. Here's what I can't figure out: How to get non-direct monitoring through the headphones. (Equivalent, I believe, to non-direct monitoring when inputting to a DAW.) Every audio interface I have looked at has this Monitor alternative: Direct or not direct. But I cannot find it in the GigCaster. When I asked Roland support, they said to send the DAW output (equivalent to the Jamulus output, I think) to GigCaster's USB as channels 1&2: "In the DAW audio settings, sending audio to Gigcaster USB 1+2 will be received on this USB channel of the Gigcaster 5 or Gigcaster 8." (Weird, as I don't see any USB 1+2, but I think they just mean to send it to 1&2.) When I do that with Jamulus, I do get the indirect monitoring mix, but I also get the direct mix--so I'm getting it twice--the direct that I don't want in Jamulus, and the somewhat delayed (latency) sound from the Jamulus server. Have you found a way to get the non-direct monitor mix without the direct monitor mix?
Here’s the next video of how to setup the GigCaster 8: ua-cam.com/video/AeTBkQ1ask4/v-deo.html

PAD 1 = WHITE, PAD 2 = RED, PAD 3 = YELLOW, PAD 4 = GREEN, PAD 5 = ORANGE, PAD 6 = BLUE, PAD 7 = PURPLE, PAD 8 = PINK
The NUMBER at the top is the PEDAL NUMBER and the number at the sides are the BANK:
Changing the FUNCTION to SOUND PAD 5-8 you can then access the other 32 tracks, This suits our setup as I perform original tracks while my wife who is a classically trained soprano, performs covers.
I hope that lot makes sense. I will do a UA-cam video when I get the time...and that's not even mentioning the jaw-dropping EFX on this thing which makes a live sound so easy to achieve.
wow. tinkering is one thing. looks like you went DEEEP on this one!
Love it!
Holy hell. I can't believe how well thought out is this piece. I was blown away even before you got to the footpedal option. They managed to stuff 2 tons of tech into a 5 pound bag.
Yep! Hence why I’m impressed! Always something missing from all the others.
This can do loads and need more videos to show you how.. stay tuned!
The really impressive part is that JP knew this stuff inside and out like he was the one that designed the thing!! 😍
Wow!! That’s awesome!
There is actually lots more to unpick and will be showcasing more tips and tricks over the coming months. 👍🏻
Stay tuned.
@JohnPaulMusicUK does this have auxiliary sockets, so you can send some channels to a loop pedal (for example)?
Has an aux in but I’m currently looking into a way to do this with a loop pedal. Possibly via one of the headphone outs… maybe.. I’ll keep you posted.
Things have definitely improved since my first 4-track in 1990!
Yeah.. I hear ya on that one! Awww memories of 4-track tape. Wow. 😊
@@JohnPaulMusicUKMemories of the early Beatles on 4-track. ;
That’s fantastic to know! Yeah it’s a brilliant device and easy to use!
Wow, Boss I am impressed with how much you packed into this mixer and really geared it to the musician and not the podcaster. Good job!
I'm impressed with the versatility of this. Endless applications.
Yea it’s pretty sweet! And you are right it ticks a lot of different options.

It’s cool 😎
Thanks for the nice clip.....Seems very nice!....Still try to find my way around recording....but this Boss Gigcaster8 seems nice!
Great video. It seems to have everything I need except one. Can the mixer be remotely controlled via an app over bluetooth or wifi?
I thoroughly enjoyed this review and this looks like an amazing device....I may have to get one of these
Go for it! You can pick one up here: geni.us/BossGigcaster8
Git mine a week back and am so impressed
Glad you like it. Lots of options with it.
The video I needed, the first bit was about me, I’ve been looking at the Rodecaster 2 for a while and when the Duo came out I started looking at that and it lead me to this!!! Thanks for describing me making me realize this is what I really need 😅

Awesome review. I love livestreaming. I just wondering which mic suit this boss. Thank you.
Thanks 🙏
Any mic.
Thanks
Thanks 🙏
You would need a sampler or looper.

Hey Claudio 👋
I haven’t made a video for the foot controls but I’m thinking maybe I should make a step by step guide.

Can you send different channels to different headphone outs? Using this a a way to get more outputs
Like if I’m a one man band sending channels from this mixer to front of house… or using the headphone outs as monitor outs…
If with you on the Zoom L-12 being the best solution to date...love that unit. 😀
Good mixer but i have a question, in interface mode can i record my vocal with the effects but in the DAW still gonna be dry for changes ?
Great help - Thanks! Will this record all individual channels on the SD Card or just one final mix?
No problem. Actually both. You can choose for it to record as a stereo mix or individually in the moment. 👍
@@JohnPaulMusicUK Thanks again.
Interested in trigger different cameras with the pads using obs.
Nice. Can be done! 👍🏻
Will make a video. 👌
@@JohnPaulMusicUK Super thanks!
John Paul, this is a great handy machine mixer. Thanks for this preview.. How much does it cost.
Depends where you are in the world. In the UK the Gigcaster is £560
Two guitarists, using two microphones for singing in a live situation will take up the 4 channels. Can a smart keyboard player go through the auxiliary to add to the band?
It’s like you KNEW what the next video would be!! Spooky! 🤣
ua-cam.com/video/AeTBkQ1ask4/v-deo.html
Great! Let's see how this works on my 18 mic.+ metronome+ talkmic online drumlessons. How can i connect my 20 Audient preamps with this "monster"?
I think you might need something bigger unless you want to put your 18 mics into a stereo mix into the Gigcaster. But then I suppose you're using 2 mixers. One for the drums and then one for everything else including talkback and computer interface.
Why do the fader caps look like they might fall apart? Great video btw, really enjoyable watch.
Aww thanks 🙏
The faders are shaped quite nicely to contour your fingers but they are plastic. They are pretty sturdy to be honest and haven’t had any fall off yet! 🤣

Hi,Is it possible to record the instrument in multitrack and then record a second track while also listening to the first track in headphones?thanks
No. It’s not a multi track recorder in that sense. It’s a live recorder. You could however plug this into a tablet or computer and do that.
Any compression on this thing? Would you recommend using this with Logic for more compressors, third party pluggins ect.?
Yes there is compression and lots of effects you could use. Have a look at this video: ua-cam.com/video/OVHK_09ytIs/v-deo.htmlsi=9VtzfXv9bvzOxG6v
No metronome
No drum machine
Enclosure is actually both - metal top and plastic bottom.
question 3 is it class compliant so that I dont need drivers for a Mac. just plug and for ?
Correct but if you want to take full advantage of the 20in 14out, you need the Gigcaster software which is good. Have a look: ua-cam.com/video/OVHK_09ytIs/v-deo.htmlsi=fkatlI2fMioW32vk

Thank you so much. As you are a sound engineer ,please let me know:
Can I ,as a pastor use Rode pro mic ,as hands free mic to address the congregation ;?

I do wonder if they will bring out a range and bigger versions. I think it makes sense to.
can you plug it into the daw and use it as a midi controller with the fades for example?

Can this unit punch in an overdub to the final recording. I need the ability to compile intro and outro's to my podcast and need the ability to edit/overdub the final recording.
Great idea but no it’s doesn’t do punch ins or overdubs.
Looks good but needs more inputs as two speakers two microphones and then you would need drums guitars and a base but it’s only got 4 inputs you would need at lease 8-10 inputs yea
So physical inputs is 6.
4 combi on the back and one Aux on the front. (The hi-z jack on the front is also input 1) but lots of versatility.
Wow! is all to say.
Great video. Look forward to watching some more of your content. Thanks.
So it can be used as a mixer/sound desk for a live PA AND for live-streaming and recording all at the same time?
Yes yes and yes.
- playback of sdcard
- full parameters overview
- using as audio interface
I basically am most interested in seeing how to playback from SD card (music tracks)
Does it allow that?
The idea is to capture the audio with this Gigcaster which it can grab as a stereo mix or as separate channels. When you playback, you are best putting that into a DAW to grab all the channels to mix there. 👍🏻

Coming soon…
Could you run all guitar fx or vocal fx on all 4 input channels?
No. Guitar fx is available on channel 1 only.
The vocal fx is available in all 4.
Which one do you think to buy?
rodecaster pro 2 or boss gigcaster 8
What do you want out of the mixer?
Gigcaster has vocal and guitar fx from boss.
Rodecaster is more for podcasts but does have flexibility.

i take it, you can multi-track record on it?

Dunno.
@@JohnPaulMusicUK thanks for the reply. That's a silly limitation regarding the headphone outs as are the small sized headphone jacks.

Thank you so much for this thorough review! I can see from the comments below that you've successfully connected the USB-C to your iPhone. Awesome! That's one big question answered. Certainly. Couple of ways to do it. There is a dedicated AUX input on the front, or you can use Bluetooth and just Bluetooth a phone or tablet.. or plug in via usb-c. And each one has its own fader. Easy. 👍🏻
Is there any way to use this with wireless/bluetooth rather than cable to your pc or ipad?
No. Cause of the amount of information coming through, it needs a physical connection to transmit all the channels in multi track.
has it got a hdmi port so i can show my screens for live gigs as well as playing my music thanks
I’m afraid no hdmi. Nothing to do with visuals on this one.

Hey 👋
Thanks for the sub.

What about a loop pedal? They have drums on and you can record yourself and even play and overdub on the top. Then you could extract that loop into a computer if you really like it to make it into a song?

thx! is it possible to sidechain the channels? I'm looking for a mixer for techno-live-setup with drummachine (Kick/Percussion/Hats etc.), Basssynth, Synth for Pads/Strings etc. and Sampler for FX/Drones and i have to handle kick-/bass frequencies in first line. thank u in advance
Great question. Not that I’m aware of I’m afraid. No side chaining.
Very cool... Does it have an aux or monitor output in addition to front of house?
I need separate FOH and IEM outputs
(using tracks with cues running out through the the in ear monitors only)
Good question. Has a main out and there are 4 headphone outs. I’ll test the idea of an IEM output and report back.
Can a Keyboard Synth be plugged into the guitar channel 1 to use the guitar effects or does it only support a guitar input?
Absolutely 👍🏻
Just plug in your Left (mono) jack into the guitar input and you can access the guitar effects on channel 1. 👍🏻
@ does this work for stereo? If I plugin in R/L outputs from keyboard into input 1 and 2 on GC8. Would only one channel have guitar effects or is there a stereo linking feature?
@@JohnPaulMusicUKspecifically at 11:49 when you mention a stereo keyboard. How would this work with guitar effects only on channel 1?
Very good. But only 4 channels in and out is rather limited. A full band will be very limited for playing live.
Yeah depends on what you need. Smaller bands should do fine. Might not be moving up the drummer on this one! 🤣
Can you do loopback mixing as in…
Does the device present multiple USB outputs to the computer that can be assigned to multiple fader channels for mixing, before sending back into the computer?
Hi John Paul. Thank you for the video. I have two doubts. Can we control the mixer with an iPad using their software via Bluetooth (remotely)? The headphone inputs works as in-ear ports for live gigs?
Hey 👋
There is no Bluetooth iPad app to control remotely and yes the 4 inputs can work with in ears if you want them to. 👍🏻
Many thanks 😄@@JohnPaulMusicUK
How do you assign the presets or user sounds to the pads, so you can use them in a live setting?
Could you do a video with the gigcaster connected to an iPad running Loopy Pro and get Loopy to send patch changes to the effects both vocal and guitar? Great unit and great video thanks,
Cool idea! Leave that with me.
