  • In our very first Homestead Book Review, we are introducing you to a book called "The Cheese Chronicles" by cheese expert Liz Thorpe. We have in hand a 2009 first edition copy of the book, which is a beautiful journey through American cheesemaking that discusses "making and selling of cheese in America, from field to farm to table." After much time spent traveling, researching, sampling, and learning - Liz shares with us what she has discovered. You will read about her experiences making cheese alongside a producer, or how hard it was for people to initially sell goat's milk cheeses. The differences between the final result in animals strictly on pasture, or those barn kept. The featured cheesemakers and their products are highlighted with notes on smell, taste, appearance, and the character and texture of the offerings. Learn about some of the bigger American makers, or the small ones who rarely sell outside of their own farm and local farmer's markets. We aren't talking about the plastic wrapped singles at every grocery store - these are special cheeses crafted with local milk from cows, sheep, and goats to produce products the farms are proud of. With Liz's expertise tasting cheese from all over the world, she selects some of the finest examples of cheese made perfect in the United States for their time. We hope you will enjoy learning more about it as we enjoy the great outdoors visiting with our own beautiful goats!
This book was selected to review not only because we love goats, but we enjoy trying new foods, and this book inspired us to try more types! I think it really speaks to that Homestead sort of character when you read about the small farms who began to dabble in cheesemaking with their own herd, persevering and struggling as they find their market in the early days while also working hard to improve their offerings.
As we mention, there are multiple ways to pick this book up and read it. But if you'd like to support teh author (and also help us at the same time) consider picking up a new copy via Amazon. Via the Amazon Affiliates program, purchases made via the links we share provide a small incentive back to the Homestead, which enables us to continue purchasing helpful things for ourselves and our animals and even our wildlife friends.

Does your female goat put out milk??? Could you get another female goat? Then you could make your own cheese and soap.

Hey Ginger - unfortunately, not only was she a neglectful mom when she had Yusuke, she also never would release milk and became feverish to the point the vet had to give her medicine for it. She would not be reliable for it. Our two boys were fixed so we could keep the family together without any more bad experiences with mom, but my original plans before that were to raise goats more and try to do things like that. So we now just hope to support others who are able to do it! I am going to be trying to find other local farms making goat milk soap for holiday stocking stuffers also

@@wolfbranchhomestead Sounds like a great idea to support people who have small goat milk or soap operations, so more people learn about them
