  • Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has seen everything during his basketball career. From barely being recruited out of high school, to winning five rings as a player alongside Michael Jordan and Tim Duncan, to four more at the helm of Golden State’s dynasty, his path has certainly been unlikely. When asked what his late father would’ve said about his journey, Kerr says, “He wouldn’t believe it.” In the season finale of Lead by Example, Kerr and Warriors President Bob Myers sit down for an unprecedented conversation on Kerr’s career, values and regrets. Kerr discusses choosing the Warriors over the Knicks and his mentor Phil Jackson, his favorite thing about Steph Curry, the ups and downs of coaching Kevin Durant, and the reason for Golden State’s success.

For real, the way his players talk about him, his coaching staff, the front office.. The guy is truly underrated. Being head coach is a very difficult and demanding job. Steve doesn't just do the bare minimum he created a shift in the culture and the way coaching is done. The system he implemented and how he organizes the day to day goes unnoticed by the casual fan. The guy truly deserves coach of the last 10 years.

People might want to go against that at first glance, but it's not even close. Like you said: less that 10 years of coaching and he's coached a dynasty. 6 Finals appearances and 4 (coulda been 5) rings. You can count on one hand how many coaches have that resume in 1 decade (Red and Phil. That's it)

It’s no wonder that the Warriors are having the success they are enjoying, these 2 lead without ego and are eager to celebrate the success of their players and others. So many people are quick to blame Steve when they lose games or if players like Wiseman are traded, it’s easy to coach from the couch but try doing it for real and see how you fare. Steve and Bob are rare gems just like Steph, Klay, Dray and Iggy, it’s a privilege to witness their era in bb.

One of the greatest GM & Coach duo!! Bob has done a tremendous job of managing the Warriors organization & coach Kerr has cemented himself as a pioneer of small ball & position less basketball. Since 2014, the NBA landscape has changed dramatically due to the dominance of the Warriors. The Warriors have demoralized & destroyed teams from the inside out. Many teams have been blown up to rebuild in order to compete or stop the Warriors. So far nothing but injuries seems to be the only Warriors show stopper because no team has been proven to beat the Warriors big4 in a 7 game series. Go Warriors!!

What a great culture to have established. It's sustained by more authentic selves of the Bob, Steve and Steph who really walk the talk (vs those with big egos and superstar-like status). You don't get that with GSW. It's beautiful to watch such a culture flourish and permeate their work. A great interview.

Steve Kerr became a great and effective leader because he is willing to learn and listen to others. He is one of the smartest and most humble player and now coach that I have ever witnessed in my lifetime. With all his success and accomplishments, he never allowed it to get into his head.
Kudos to you Steve! Despite your unlikely journey, you deserve all the milestones you have reached. Hopefully there is a lot more in store in the future. Thank you for being a good man and a good example to everyone!

Steve will never see this and Bob probably won’t either, but one never knows. Basically, thank you both…for what you describe as the joy you’ve given me and all of us sports fans who have a bit of the Bay Area in us. But, also for who you undoubtedly are, for what is so easy to see in your intelligence and humanity. And ego. The healthy ego that can dream and lead and imagine yourselves as large and empowered without ever believing you’re better or that it’s even about you. Simply put, we are all connected and we should aspire to all simply serve in the manner that we can. Thank you, again.

The response to then question at @10:45. Dang. Such a humble answer. If Steph was asked this his reply would not be what Kerr said and that’s a part of why it’s worked so well; no ego.
