While you’ll likely get thrown a few curveball questions during your interviews, there are some basic interview questions you should expect.
One of those questions is, “Why do you want this job?”
If you don’t have a good answer for this, you can kiss your chances at getting hired goodbye.
What you need to do is showcase your connection story.
What do you respect, appreciate, or admire about this company, over ANY other company? Show them that you want to work here for more than just a paycheck. Show them that you have a personal connection with it, which is a big part of the reason you’re pursuing the role.

I love how one-sided being employed is now. I'm supposed to be emotionally connected to the company, dedicate my life to the company and they lay us off based on one potato, two potato...
Correct.
Yeah I agree in the whole thing's stupid
They expect loyalty to be a one way street.
Thank you. Exactly!!!

Q: I would like my income to increase? Currently at $50,000 per year. I work in the transportation industry. I have two associates degrees and three classes left to obtain my bachelor's degree from loyola university Chicago in management. Currently employed at a small trucking company as a driver. And just applied at Amtrak. What are my chances of getting that job. Plus, railroad experience.

Ive done HR and Recruiting for 16yrs and I NEVER as those corny scripted questions. All you're doing is encouraging people to lie to you. I believe through dialogue, not Q&A you'll get all the answers you need from a potential candidate. Ive learned when a candidate is comfortable their true self is revealed. When they've remembered prepared answers to prepared questions its just an act. Of course you have to ask basic question especially about previous work experience. But I'm not asking anyone "why do they want to work here" or "why you are the best person for this job" or "why should i hire you". That's so 1960's and 1970's.
those three questions are part of the reason I keep going back to the idea that suicide seems more logical than attempting finding a job. I get sick thinking about being asked those questions. I am glad there are people who don't do that to people but because I don't know how to deal with those effed up questions I can not even bare applying anywhere ever. I don't know how to find out who doesn't do that to people. I think there is likely 10 to 20 percent of jobs maybe a little more that the person has a connection store with. there really isn't any place that has a connection story for me and I can understand that question for a high up position but I have been asked on min wage jobs,
@@gettintherejanice6216 I understand. When I relocated to Florida after working 15 yrs with the same company, I ran into these same silly questions when looking for a job. And it can be depressing. If 15 yrs of experience isn't enough for why I'm the right fit, then I don't know what to tell you.
Wow 16 years! you seem to be young and I admire the work efforts in HR you have chosen to put your mind to.
I do believe those questions can be mundane, so your initative to do something different is probably more enjoyable for you then the potiential candidate. Laughing a little. Im sure people like to at least feel prepared.
@@shanellvioletslecarr2689 I'm going to take that as a compliment...(-: I started fairly young in HR as a clerk right out of college. I do recruiting till this day and I can sense when people get in front of me they are terrified what I'm going to ask. But I assure them I want them to feel comfortable and to relax. They walk in terrified and walk out relieved that it wasn't an interrogation.

The question "why do you want this job" is ridiculous. Money. Only reason ever, all others is a lie. If a company doesn't want you to leave then they need to pay well.
Nice, there you have an answer to WHAT ARE YOUR STRENGTHS. You are an honest person :D
Chris Patrick... absolutely. I would have remained employed cleaning offices of there was a purpose. Long story short. I NEEDED MORE MONEY. Such as respect and honesty. The concept of ensuring I can also pay my car note and service bill to get there, take care of my family, and have benefits they employed in the documents. Keep employees excited and enthusiastic about what they do and appreciate them as people alongside the pay.
@Chris Patrick...I disagree. "Money", answers the question "why do you want A job", not why you want this particular job. While we all want to earn enough to support our preferred lifestyles, I believe there are as many if not more people that are willing to accept less to do work that they love, as there are people who spend their precious, short lives doing work that they hate, because it pays well. There are so many other factors that come into play as well, such as location, flexibility, benefits etc...so I'm not sure if you were just trying to be funny by over simplifying it, but wanted to comment just in case.
They also need to treat you right.
@@RealChunka I can relate to your comment... But for my situation.. $ is one of the key factors contributing to why I would choose a specific job or career. Secondly, I applied for it because I feel deserving of it; thirdly, I went to school for it. I only apply to jobs I feel confident in doing that would benefit me my family and my lifestyle immediately and the way I see it is when the training is accessible and the pay is acceptable will speak volume. I must have the financial and the knowledge to be productive. With no money I can't get there, function in the company, nor become mebtally and financially stable.
Question why did you choose this position? Um because it was posted and I was browsing the description that said will train🤔. I will gain a niche later but right now I have a car note and utilities to pay and children to care for

@@Falconsfan1020 hiring managers are entitled dumbfucks
Lmao funny but true
Unless you're a volunteer, your chief reason for applying for a job IS the money. That might not be the best answer to give to that question, but if an employer thinks that their company is so amazing and does such positive life-affirming work that prospective employees are lining up around the block to "make a difference" - they drank the KoolAid. Employees are there so they can continue to afford to eat and have a roof over their heads. Every employee would prefer not to work at all. Think of the popular conversation topic 'what would you do if you won the lottery'? No one says they would keep their job. Certainly nowhere near the majority of employees would want to keep their job. To pretend otherwise is delusional.
What do you recommend one would say to get on at a candy store or gas station. Obviously these are not the best jobs but they seem to ask these questions too.
warmgulfwind it’s not always money based
I think these days companies don’t value their employees. It’s rare to find a company that does.
warmgulfwind I agree. Banking, seriously 😐 lame answer at best. She should have used her position as a template. I guess that she doesn’t want to loose her position to any of us looking for advice.

These replies are so savage. I thought I was the only person that felt this way
Let's be honest, most of us are lying to the establishment on why we want to work there.
I think it's pretty useless thing to ask, especially for an entry job. This hurts a lot of chances for autistic people since they just speak their mind and take things literal.
That's just my opinion. Good video!
Half the battle is showing the company that you have prepared for the interview, although you're right there's a lot of deception it still shows initiative and effort if you prepare
@@Tezwah it's discrimination against those on the autism spectrum
@@directorbeau no it isn't. Autistic people can still prepare. It would only be discriminatory if no allowances were made when the answer is given
@@Tezwah yes, we need to be prepared to talk about our experience, skills, expertise, what we can bring to the table and how we can be useful to the company. But wasting time by having to recite crap both sides don't believe in to reply to a question that shouldn't be asked in the first place is a waste of time for both parties.
@@vp3841 you are just not understanding the purpose of the question.
There are movies like “office space” for a reason. Truth is, most of us work to live, not live to work. So it’s a loaded question. Much like the useless STAR interview questions. If you are working for someone else, you are making their dreams come true at the cost of your time, in which we have a limit amount. Simple answer should be, so I can get the skills or capital to start my own company.
yeah, you should.
Thanks for making this video, and the comments are hilarious.

How could you express an emotional connection to the interviewer if the company you are applying manufactures lubricants for automobiles?
“I really like lube “
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
You can demonstrate with your answer that you understand the value they offer customers who choose their brand because of what sets it apart. Even automotive oils differ from one another in the details of their formulation and compete to give themselves the best edge in the market. Show that you understand their Brand A is unique so offers higher value than some other brand, and that you have benefitted from or seen costumers benefit from that leading edge. Try that.

a person with anxiety or mental health would not be able to answer that question with such confidence. Also. Everyone goes to work for one reason and one reason only, the money.
Girl, I feel you. I've had mental health issues in the past, but I'm working through them. You know what I'm finding out? Positivity can actually go a long way! I try to keep it simple and only focus on the things I have control over: myself and nobody else. But it is working!!! You have to speak life into your own life: I can do this. I am smart, capable, and balanced. I can make and reach goals. Everything will not change in five minutes every time you do this. A lot of times it actually will tho. Or if not in five minutes, five hours, or five days, or five weeks. But you need to set your self up to win more by believing you can win! I believe in you. I'm gonna be praying! Have a blessed day!!! ☺🙏🌱💖
The answer is; I'm strong advocate of not starving to death. Lol
Can you please do a video on how to land a job when you are a minority? No matter what people who don't live as a minority say, It's harder. I have a "normal" name, am a good communicator, and have a degree and a lot of freelance experience in my field so hiring managers call me a lot. I do well on the phone interview, am invited for an in-person interview, and then never hear back. I can instantly see the look in my interviewer's face the moment I walk in looking "different" than expected that he/she isn't seeing/hearing ME, just how I'm different.
Define minority. I'm a minority and land jobs with no degrees or certificates.
@@AlfredoPachecoJr Probably reeks of self-pity when interviewing. I've worked with people like him. They believe there's a person behind the curtains keeping them down.

“My lord please give me the job I’ll do anything ! Anything .”
Yes I'm sure millions of underpaid, low skill, jobs need to be filled by people that love serving others, picking up after others, having no job security. Get real.
Wen I went to an interview the manager said we need a responsible person, who is always on time with a GED or higher education, at least 2 years of experience well train never said no wen ask to work holidays, weekend's and overtime a person who can handle a lot of pressure with knowledge in computer, he said a lot of requirements for the next 8 or 9 minutes wen he finish sayin all the requirements for the position I ask how much would they pay he said, we pay minimum wage($10.50 per hour)and a bonus every Christmas. I was thinking to myself really you guys want all that and pay minimum, and then I left
Smart move because most companies used the workers and many stupid people stay because they cant see themselves successful
@J OneLife you must be lying. I get job interviews everyday. You dont want to work
How do you find a place that is hiring, pays well, and that you are passionate about?
Its too bad that most of the people who are really good at playing in your dog and pony show have no flipping idea as to how to perform on the job. I have seen very little connection between the interview process and actually finding good people.
It's 100% for the money
I want the job because I love being a 9-5 wage slave
Why are we robots? Why does one type of answer apply to all employers? Are humans that ridiculous? You work to improve your quality of life just like employers if they could earn a dollar more they're off to the next company.
Yeah I hate this question. I have seen it on the application before I have interviewed! Why not flip the script? Ask the interviewer
“ why do like working here? Why do you choose to stay here?” This is an honest response imho.
That's a good question but not a good response to their question. If you said that as a response to 'why do you want to work here' you most likely will not get the job
Tezwah one uses their response to then answer the question. Its a Jedi trick.
@@tonymoore7805 nah, you just don't get the job because you gave a silly answer to a serious question. But whatever floats your boat!

But sometimes you are applying for a job you know nothing about.. and aren’t applying at a bank you’ve been using for 10 years. 😵 basically fake it til you make it
You should always do the research first so you know what its all about
Kiah Stromme the corporate world is all about who lies the best. Aka sales.
I feel like job interview is more about how can you lie choreographically as if seems real 😂
Interviewer: Why are you interested in this job?
Me: I was always passionate about not starving to death
Thank you for the example. But how do you answer this question if you don’t have a connection with the company you’re interviewing with?
You lie, like every other question.
Maybe you can flip it on the feeling of how you could assist with making the company better. When you do your research and you see numbers like assisted 800 people you could say, "I saw on your website that you assisted 800 people with me as a team member I can increase that by 15%. It may not be true, but they don't know that... yet.
Cantetinza17 fake it till you make it

Good advice, I have a Master's in HR, not sure about the emotional connection though, if you are applying to a company who has posted a position in which you feel qualified. Most of the time you match your skills with the job description and elaborate on those skills, it's not necessarily an "emotional connection".
Same!

“Why do you want this job” is, often, a trick question. It forces many to lie. Many people are working in jobs they hate because they went to the interview and lied about why they wanted the job.
It was not to stay and make a career out of it. It was to pay bills.
Authenticity in interviews is rare, both from the interviewer and the person being interviewed.
If everyone was authentic then people with mental disorders would not have a job

I think this applies for dream jobs but sometimes you gotta provide for your family and you’ve been out of work for 5 months. At that point, the reason just isn’t that deep, especially when you’re submitting 4-5 resumes a week to various companies for months through search engines, competing with anywhere from 300+ to 1,000 other resumes per job. It comes down to creating reasons why you “want” this position but it’s really about the paycheck, in most cases.
