As a New Orleans native, I can confirm that those horseback Quarter cops are actually pretty badass. One Mardi Gras, I watched them search this really young black kid because someone had said he was selling drugs. They frisked him, found nothing, and as an apology they let him ride on one of the horses. That kid went from looking so confused to so happy so quickly.
That's fucking awesome!
Horseback cops are some of the most amazing folks I've ever encountered. The Dallas PD's horse patrols are used every year at the state fair, and I'd swear they're just what Hammond describes here. The horses are massive, the riders are massive, but they are the most friendly, helpful cops I've ever interacted with.

My father was a cop. He had the same attitude. He would always make clear to you that he was about to fuck you up. And he could walk the walk, as well as talk the talk. I remember I only back talked and disrespected him once. He had retired as a police officer and was working as a bouncer in my grandmothers club. I was 22 and came in and we had words, I smarted off and turned around and walked out. Next thing I know I was spun around by him, he grabbed me by the throat and lifted me off the ground like Darth Vader and said, "Boy...I'll break both your legs....". That was the first and ONLY time I ever disrespected him...lol.

Found out the hard way in 2006 that they won’t arrest you for getting naked on bourbon st, but they will if you get naked and try to climb onto a float because “I gotta be part of the show!”

Dude, I’ve actually met a cop with an insane low vocal octave. It was awesomely terrifying. Their voice literally demanded all of the attention. Pretty nice guy.

I remember I saw Daryl Hammond at the Improv in Miami. He was talking about the time he met Monica Lewinsky. He said they locked eyes as they walked up to each. The impression of the guy talking to the officer cracked me up. Sounds like an impediment which is sad but reminded me of a story my uncle witnessed. His mechanic talks like that. Then this other guy comes in talking like the mechanic so the mechanic gets pissed and asks if the guy is making fun of him. Now the guy is pissed and thinks the mechanic is making fin of him. He laughed and left but I wonder if they ever figured it out.

No, according to what he actually says,
despite being totally freaked out he played it cool and asked the waitress if that was normal, and *she* got the cops because she knew the creeps in question and knew they weren't going to behave unless cops were involved...
And even then, he tried to deescalate by saying it was no big deal and that he was glad to just leave.
Yeah that ain't exactly like I thought. you don't get that kind of treatment from the horse cops in New Orleans unless you are a star. and I agree with the other comment I read, that's one group of people I would never mess with.
