I raced a 81 rm 125 and was possibly the best bike I have ever had. Then moved to a 84 e model another great bike. After these years they went down hill till a lot later. Still ride them today. 89 rm 125 and a 2011 rmz 450.
The 81 RM had an outstanding low to mid powerband stock, but one year later the machine was a world beater, as the magazine's reported a quick handling, superb rear suspension, and a mid to top, hold on for your life powerband !
I had one of these when I was 14, absolutely loved it,shame I rode it off when i missed a turn and ended up underwater in the river, it wrecked the engine beyond repair

I remembered when these bikes came out I had and still have a 81 Maico 490 and thought the Japanese bikes are starting to try to catch up with Maico
