- Nero is a favorite candidate, but Nero, if you pick one of the alternate spellings for his name (by gematria) you can get it to match 616, not 666. Curiosly, there are manuscripts of Revelation that have 616 instead of 666. Check this out!

This seems like a great approach in general for biblical interpretation. Thank you for being firm with the scope of the exegetical data, and not importing a rigid system onto the data set which allows some variance of interpretation.
How did Jesus Christ know that 666 was significant?
As with a lot of Scriptural mysteries, I'll assert to my Christian friends that I begin with the belief that Scripture is reliable, God-inspired and true - and yet that doesn't mean we can correctly understand certain difficult passages - at least not for NOW. As 1 Corinthians notes, our limited perspectives and understandings: "For we know in part and prophesy in part;" and, "For now we see in a mirror dimly." These tell me there is a time for more clarity and knowledge - but we're just not there yet. So, let's not get too dogmatic upon the mysteries, but absorb and obey what is already CLEAR to us.
When the Christ came, there were 2 Grand Priests ; today, we have 2 Popes. This Pope is the last one. Rome will fall like Constantinople, like Jerusalem. The Islamic Antichrist Califat resurrected by the Turkey = Rome+ Constantinople ( Ottoman Empire )= The final Beast of Daniel 2. Europe will be Muslim ; USA, Communist.
Also Daniel 12, not even Daniel understood his revelation. And when he asked for clarity, God told him to go his way and he will live the rest of his days in peace. Just as the Messiah was obvious yet hidden, so is Revelation hidden until we know what to look for. Right now, we don't.
God's true followers can correctly understand difficult passages because they were given in the first place to be understood. As Daniel was instructed to write in chapter 12, it is the wicked who doesn't understand.

Nero was a type and shadow. If he was the beast, there is still no explanation for who the false prophet was.......also, how could there have been "a great falling away" like Paul talks about(which was clearly about Christians, he speaking to believers in that scripture, NOT Jews. I mean he was referencing believers in Christ, and the "Jews" at the time of Nero DID NOT fit the descriptor of "one of the faithful") if Christianity was still in its infancy??
NERO was bad, his "dinner by Christian candle light" was especially gruesome/satanic, but he was just a shadow of what was/is to come.
I think so too. Personally I believe in an early writing of Revelation because of the temple prophecy but who really knows indeed.

all the movies and books about the futuristic anti-Christ that is yet to be, but all along it was ancient history. there have been some anti-Christ world leaders after Nero like Mao with 40 million kills, Stalin, pol pot. And of course, who could forget Hitler, but Nero persecuted the Christians ruthlessly and made himself God standing in the place of god. The preterist were right after all.

@@MrMac6375 Revelation 19-22, if Nero was the anti Christ, in this year, there would be no more death. It’s been nearly 2000 years since Nero. Jesus comes and has the beast tossed into hell, and then reigns for 1000 years. Shortly after is the great white throne judgment, then the new Jerusalem.
Again, if this already happened, there would be no more death
@@dadblogCA I believe we’re currently in the millennial kingdom. Jews in the first century missed their messiah because they misunderstood what the prophets were saying. Sadly, too many have also missed what Jesus said about His kingdom, that it wasn’t of this world, that it was at hand, that the generation He was speaking to, some would not see death before He came.
Prophecy isn’t always literal in the way we think. We also must not look at it from modern day context, but what would have been the understanding they had in the first century.
Let scripture interpret scripture, not your newspaper.
@@MrMac6375 bud, after you say “back it up with scripture” you say “I believe we’re in the millinneal kingdom” and “scripture isn’t literal” based off of nothing. When Jesus sets up His kingdom, He overcomes the beast and throws the beast into the lake of fire, and then He rules with a rod of iron, and the saints rule with Him. There will be no more war between nations when Jesus is reigning.
And again, use your own logic: Nero was never thrown into a lake of fire, but even if he was, that happened around 69 AD. It’s 2024. 69+1000=1069. This is simple math, not an allegory. Jesus isn’t using “1000 years” to magically mean “2000 years” because YOU don’t like the message.
And Jesus isn’t reigning physically on earth right now, do you see the vast amount of evil, satanic pagan worship going on? Open your eyes. He is coming soon.

You can believe In futurism or that the text was aimed at the period It was written in. but always remember history has a nasty way of repeating itself.
Received the book from Dr Heiser with the title "The Old testament in the book of Revelation" or something similar, I'm praying that I will have time to read this because the Old testament is my favorite, my next favorite is the book of Revelation.
I have that book too! I'm really enjoying it. It's really helping me as I teach through Revelation.
We only have one source for a date of 96, in Irenaeus. In historical studies, one source without corroboration is not considered of evidentiary value. Biblically it also takes two or three witnesses to establish a thing.
Set Irenaeus against all the internal and external evidence for a date of 66 or prior. There's a chain of evidence between Daniel, the Olivet Discourse, and Revelation, with supportive evidence in the various epistles that strongly indicates preterism.
Daniel is told that there is coning a period of 3 1/2 years during which the power of the holy people would be scattered, and that this is the meaning of his visions (of invasion, abomination, tribulation, desolation, and deliverance of a righteous remnant).
Revelation keeps referring to a period of this length during which the Gentiles trample the holy city, Rome makes war on Gods people and conquers them, and the Christians of Judea flee into the wilderness. Sounds a lot like A D. 66-70 to me. Add to that the description of the Mesopotamian client kings employed by Titus (the ten kings/kings of the east), and the Roman beast turning on it's consort the "whore" (Jerusalem) and destroying her and that nails it down further. (Not to mention the Roman equestrian troops of Revelation 9.)
Between the two, you have Christ explicitly saying that he would return before his generation passed and that people hearing him say that would live to see it happen; then directly linking his return to the siege and fall of Jerusalem, destruction of the Temple and Jewish diaspora. Prior to all of which Judean Christians would flee to surrounding wilderness areas. Uh oh, sounds like A D. 66-70 again.
Put all that together with Revelation declaring that it is about things which must SHORTLY cone to pass, and you cannot, with a straight face, give it a date of 96.

That's apocalyptic visual metaphor and hyperbole and prophetic/poetic metaphor. All that bad stuff happens during the Roman assault on Judea.
When it speaks of the sun going black, stars falling, etc. Isaiah said the same things about the fall of Babylon. The heavenly bodies falling or being extinguished represents the rulers of the land under judgement being killed or thrown out of power by foreign invaders.The earth quakin' & shakin' means the land is thrown into chaos. When the land under judgement is the Holy Land, it adds the sea being turbulent or aggressive (representing Gentile nations).
As for the Lord "coming upon the clouds" that's a common biblical metaphor for God attacking his enemies and rescuing his friends. David credits God with saving his life from Saul by portraying God riding clouds and cherubs and flinging fire and lightning at Saul. That's "poetic license", what physically happened was that David dodged a javelin and hid in a cave.
Same with the coming of Christ: poetically, he comes in power and splendor upon the clouds of heaven for all to see; literally, the events of the downfall of the apostate Jews who rejected him and persecuted his apostles were his doing, and their occurrence publicly vindicated and revealed him and demonstrated his power for all to see. Those events were in effect "Passion of the Christ 2: Jesus' Revenge".
I think you are right. I use to take the futurist position. Now I doubt it. The interpretation that it happened at the fall of the 2nd temple fits perfectly. Oh well

The Hebrew word for year is shaneh and has a gematrical value of 355. The Hebrew calendar is on a lunar year which has 355 days. Hebrew word for pregnancy is haryon and has a gematrical value of 271. There are 271 days in a normal pregnancy. There’s all kinds of words and appropriate meanings that fall in this gematrical game, but overall it waa exploited by the kabbalists to make mystical insights into sacred writings to develop new interpretations. Some are really fascinating tho to say the least.

the word 'anti-Christ' only appeared in the epistle of John about four times and there's a definition of what an anti-Christ is by John... it's not a particular person as many has speculated.... as for the word 'anti-Christ', there's not a mention of that anywhere in the book of Revelation and both the epistle of John and Revelation are written by the same apostle... John never mentioned that the man whose number is 666 as anti-Christ... so it's best one stick to Exegesis and not Eisegesis when dealing with the Word of God.

In very ancient time (Sumerian) the demons were all identified by a name and BY A NUMBER together.
666 clearly refers to Nero. There is no doubt. John asked his readers, who knew gematria, to calculate his name. That is precisely why some scribes used 616 instead as found in some manuscripts in Egypt because that is the calculation for the alternative spelling of Nero's name with which they were more familiar. Nothing else adequately explains that.
As for this having implications for the dating of Revelation, that's irrelevant. You seem to be assuming that John's visions were all about the future (or present) from John's perspective. They are in fact mainly about events in the 1st century.
And by the way, 'Antichrist' isnt even in Revelation!

Is it possible that John was trying to veil his meaning from the Pharisees rather than the Romans?
It is true that a large percentage of Pharisees were of Edomite extraction. Between what Christ himself said in Matthew 23 and what John reiterated in his epistles, concerning the Pharisees and those who deny Yahshua is the Messiah, it seems to make more sense.
From my perspective it seems like the majority of Romans couldn't have cared less who Christ was, whereas the Pharisees clearly knew who he was and why he was there (John 11:47-53).
It seems clear to me from the scriptures that initially it was the Pharisees, not the Romans who were so antithetical to Christ and Christians.
This certainly isn't to suggest that all Pharisees were antithetical to Christ and his followers, i.e, Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea, etc, and indeed even some of the Romans believed in him (truly this man was the son of God).
It is however thoroughly documented that many of the core elements of Phariseeism were, and remained antithetical to Christians and Christianity even unto this day.
I can't help but wonder to what degree these elements are involved in the present war against Christianity; especially since the end of world war 2.
I believe this bears further study and resolution.
In my humble opinion, the very unchristian state of our country today got one of it's biggest impetus when prayer was removed from public schools by force of law under the guise of "separation of church and state."
These words however are no where written in the founding documents of this nation. They are, rather, a paraphrase of something Thomas Jefferson wrote in a letter to a Baptist minister who was concerned that local laws might be enacted to prohibit or inhibit the practice of religion.
The words of the first amendment actually state the following: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;"
Indeed, the outlawing of prayer in school is completely contrary to the intent of the words there written.
It is also noteworthy that when these words were written in 1791, freedom of religion was defined and understood as freedom of Christianity; in essence, regardless of whether you were Baptist, Methodist, Anglican etc, you were free to practice Christianity according to the morals and dogma of your particular denomination.
Things like Islam or Hinduism, etc, were not recognized as valid religions, but were seen as false and heretical. This was consistently upheld by the supreme court until shortly after world war two, after which our nation began the slippery slide into the complete decadence we find ourselves in today.

God is patient and long suffering even with his first creation who remanded their punishment for the day of judgment and HIS WILL shall be done. One thing I think the movie failed to touch on was the fact that Madalyn Murray O'Hair was also a committed communist who hated America enough that she tried to emigrate to the Soviet Union. I find it interesting that her son William, whom she "used" to spearhead her lawsuit later became a conservative Christian minister. Sadly, he is misrepresented in the movie as not caring about the welfare and whereabouts of his family after they were kidnapped and murdered. This was blatantly untrue as he devoted a great deal of time searching for them.

Dear Dr. Heiser: I hope you're doing well. Thank you for sharing this wonderful video with us. One of my favourite videos of yours is this one. This is fascinating information! Because Nero was a very fascinating figure in Roman history, we really enjoyed seeing this video.
The truth is that we have so little evidence that anyone holding a dogmatic position on a pre/post 70 AD date for Revelation is WAY overstating their case. As Dr. Heiser indicates even the early church fathers within a couple hundred years of the writing differed on its date.

Great video! I do disagree that you need to commit to an early date of authorship to see this as an "already." Several things in Revelation appear to point to past events, occurring before the book was written (the dragon chasing the child in Revelation 12 referring to Jesus' birth/Herod as one example). Revelation 1:19 also appears to imply that some of the things being written are events that had already occurred. So date dependency is a weak counterargument in my opinion :)
Actually, mid-90's Emperor Domitian who was considered in Asia Minor "Nero Redivivus" and was engaged in localized persecutions of Christians in the area. Ben Witherington has a great aside in his commentary on this.
Actually there is little to no evidence that Domitian did much, especially compared to Nero.
Suetonius: The Roman biographer Suetonius provides detailed accounts of Domitian's reign in his work "The Twelve Caesars." He describes Domitian as a paranoid and cruel ruler who engaged in excessive executions, confiscations of property, and torture.
Martial: The poet Martial, who lived during Domitian's reign, wrote epigrams that often satirized the emperor's cruelty and the fear that his rule instilled in the Roman people.
Pliny the Younger: Pliny the Younger, a Roman statesman and author, wrote letters that mention Domitian's oppressive policies and the persecution of Christians during his reign.

Indeed, in the image in the book of Daniel, Babylon IS the head of gold. Each empire represented by some precious metal still exists today. According to Daniel these empires all collapse at the same time.

You're coming at this from a 21st century perspective of language. You MUST study within the contextual understanding of the 1st century Jewish speakers.
The number of the man 666 is also Nimrod/Gilgamesh/ Marduk who was 2/3 man and 1/3 nephilim.

The book was written by John, the same john of the gospels, hence there is a lot missing in his gospel compared to the other three... why write something you have already written?
Daniel 11 and Antiochus Epiphanies (spelling) was the abomination of desolation, later to be fulfilled in Matt. 24 "abomination of desolation" cross with Luke 21 "when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies." The armies of Titus did this job. I don't see how this ties into the identification of Nero, nor how this would deny a pre 70 AD dating to the book of Revelation?

1. We die and face the Great White Throne Judgment
2. If we are Christians, we move on to the New Heaven / New Earth / New Jerusalem (this is the place where all of the believers went in 70AD at the Second Coming of Christ). It is an "unseen realm" a heavenly realm.
Why? Mr. Houser- is there a discrepancy on when Revelations was written? I'm no scholar, but it makes more sense to me (now) that it was written before AD70. It was the whole point- to warn 1st century believers of their tribulation. Which was to come.

The easy answer is yes. He is the type/prototype/precursor -- already but not yet -- fulfillment. HOWEVER,,,,
Given what's in chapter 21, I have always found it hard to swallow anything except a futurist interpretation for The Revelation. It is baked in.
After I was born again, like the disciples, I wanted to know when will these things be (Matt 24)? The answer is in Matt 24, but that's another question.
So. I read The Revelation about a hundred times in my KJV pew Bible. It is probably not the best place to begin a personal devotional study of the Bible as a new Christian believer. For background , I had read Hal Lindsey's Late Great Planet Earth, so I had a Dispensational lean to my own perspective, although I was not aware of it at the time.

After picking up my children from school one day, they breathlessly informed me that our president was the antichrist. I calmly told them that whoever told them that is probably mistaken, and mentioned a few facts about the antichrist of the Bible. I pointed out that the Bible version of the antichrist does not fit the description of our president. The AC is not a Kenyan, etc. YES, Patriarchy matters in the Bible. Sorry 'bout that.
My best guess is that when he appears, he will be easy to identify IF you know Bible prophecy. If not. You will fall for his deception. He will be very deceptive, no doubt. Truth matters.

It is my understanding that in Rev. 13:18 the definite article "a" (eg. "a man") is not in the manuscript.

Therefore Rev. 13:18 simply reads, "the number of MAN," which would support the idea that this is man at the PINNACLE of his rebellious & Babel-like humanity -- falling short of completion & God's true sabbath rest, symbolized by the number "7."
[Note: 666 also adds up to 18, reduced to the single digit "9" (1+8), which falls short of the number "10" (symbolic for "Perfection").
Also...There are 2 Beasts mentioned in Rev. 13 -- one "out of the sea" (v.1) and the other "out of the earth" (v.11).
▪︎Beast 1 is a *Global* Geo-Political Antichrist Beast Alliance.
▪︎Beast 2 is a *Global* Religio-Ecumenical Antichrist Beast Alliance -- and it *looks like a lamb (Christ), but speaks as a dragon* (Satan) -- alluding to it having a form of "Christianity" -- and it is also called "the harlot" who rides the Geo-Political beast for a while, but then gets kicked to the curb, per Rev. 17, having apparently served the purposes of the Geo-Political beast agenda.
And in Rev. 18 there is a call for true believers ("beloved") who were deceived by the Religio-Ecumenical Harlot Beast, to "Come out of her, My beloved" (v.4).
Revelation 17 is the key to understanding not only both beasts of Rev. 13, but the timeline of fulfillment, which is yet future, per information gleaned from Rev.17.

There are two sides, two aspects about "Rome:" 1.) actual "kings", governments of the world somehow unifying and identifying with the Roman Empire and 2.) the religious side, most likely the Roman Catholic Church. What the prophecies point to implies some kind of "restoration" or "revival" of both. How? I have no idea. I can see how a unified Europe could become more "Roman" maybe just in "spirit" but maybe even in an actual sense. But the Catholic Church is much less powerful and influential today compared to past history. I can't imagine how it could rise up again. But the prophecies, like in Revelation 17, show a full-fledged, powerful, religious harlot, deceiving the world and riding the beast, Rome.

I think the lady's question contained three incorrect suppositions.
Firstly, the Greek text does not say the beast is the number of 'a' man - singular. There is no 'a' in the Greek text. Some translation, therefore render it as 'the number man/manking/humankind. And that is exactly what I believe it is.
Secondly, the statement that 666 is one less than perfection which is the seven is also incorrect. The number seven in scripture does not signify perfection. The number seven signifies complete/completion/whole as in seven days make a complete week; the beast with seven heads makes up the complete Gentile beast throughout history. The AKJV uses the older meaning of the word 'perfect' to mean complete. The seven headedbeast is certainly not perfect in the sense of perfection , but is perfect in regard to completion.
Thirdly, the scriptual numbers are symbolic and not gematria. Numbers have meanings; eight is the number symbolic of resurrection because the eighth day is the first day of the resurrected week; six is man's number because he was formed on the sixth day.

I want to say this, last year i was given a revelation. But first many of the Prophesy will never be revealed to preachers and those Doctors of scripture etc, God always chooses those in lower nature to avoid superiority. Therefore, most if not all revelation prophesies God will reveal it only to the meak, the lowest of the low with a pure heart. Not Dr. So and So, Preachers, Teachers etc. God will not do that, not revelation. He didn't even give it to Paul but John.
We know that 666 in itself represents a man that can and will never have the spirit of God and infact him and the false Prophet will be the first thrown in the lake of fire. Now calculate can be numerical but we always over think it, always. Infact, I can argue that most the book of revelation can and will go unnoticed to the best of Christianity. But I was given a revelation and I am still putting it together. A man has 3 parts just like God. 1st part is a physical body, 2nd part is a human soul and 3rd part is the spirit of Christ. Now the "physical body" will see death but What is death? The Bible says it is wages owed to sinners. Scripture says; "the wages of sin is death."
We have a physical body which is corruptible and therefore destructible. We will be laid corruptible through death and raised in glory just as sinners are born again in Christ. Laid in corruption, raised incorruptible. Laid in Sin, raised in Glory.
We also have a Soul which leaves the body upon death. Genesis 35:18; And so it was Rachel, as her soul departed her she died and her body was buried." Therefore, our Soul departs us upon death. However, 2 Corinthians 5:6-8; Absent from the Body is to be present with the Lord." So we know our Souls departs the physical body to be present with the Lord. "For flesh and blood cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven" 1 Corinthians 15:50.
Now the 3rd part which is the Spirit of God. So far the first 2 we Christians have, A Physical Body and a Soul and therefore we are 2/3 of our Holy Trinity Let us continue. "Through Adam sin entered and we were born spiritually dead" Romans 7:9." Therefore we all alive were born 2/3 of a man, that's absent of the Spirit of Christ. Only when we believe in the Gospel 1 Cor 15:1-4 the Death, Burial and Ressurection of Christ for our Sins according to the scriptures only are we saved. "If you shall believe, then you shall be saved." Once you accept Christ Spirit into you, you have fulfilled your Holy Trinity 3/3 a man, you are whole. Without Christ, you are only Physical Body and Soul, you are 2/3 a man. Antichrist are 2/3 men as they refuse to accept the Spirit of Christ and rather test the Second Death which is promises to unrepentant sinners and those who deny his son. Infact, God will Judge sinners based on rather or not they accepted the Gospel and his only Son. If not, then you will give an account of all your sins before being thrown into the lake of fire which is the Second Death. Death comes to all but Christians "God's very elect" are sparred from Second Death or Gods wrath. 1 John 2:2 "He is the propitiation for our sins." Propitiation is the offering of a gift to appease someone and in the biblical text its to avert God's Wrath away from his very elect for the Sins they committed. Christ gave his life as a gift to God to spare us of his wrath. God's promise "By no means will I spare the guilty" "There is no remission of Sins without Bloodshed, a sacrifice free of blemish. That's Christ. That's why the Second Death is sparred.
Final Closing:
Bring born 2/3 man without Christ having only Physical Body and Soul is condemned to the Second Death eternal seperation from God. But Christ Spirit restores and become our Gift of salvation. "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life" Romans 6:23. A Antichrist is 2/3 a man living without the Spirit of Christ. He mortally exist only a body and a soul which will be condemned to the abyss upon his death for his rejection of God's only Son. I feel that the book of Revelation is not only about a large and final outcome, but also can be interpreted as a 'personal journey' and I'd love to go over that with someone who has more details but can see beyond themselves, and more importantly perhaps, a needless pile of accreditatuons behind their name, and the labor endured in obtaining them, as to God, they are just loud coins in the offering.
There are to be 'many christs'... either us as Him - Lord Jesus our Messiah, or else advise folks to 'look in a mirror'. And if you see something troubling - head for a 'mountain', find a 'shepherd', and find a crack to hide in. The crack I'd suggest would be the 'grace' and sacrifice of Jesus THE Christ.

This is the deception that arises from believing in the book being written in 95. It was written pre-70.
666 is the number of the man yes but look at how old it really is. A human is made up of 3 parts, the flesh, the spirit, and the soul. When you divide that number 3 by 2, you get 666. The whole gematria "thing" unravels rather quickly. If the assumption is that 1st Century Jewish Christians could "decode" the text to reveal the true name of the Beast, why couldn't a 1st Century Temple Jew? Any Temple Jew worth his salt who had knowledge of John's writing would have "decoded" the name and handed it right to the Romans just like they did with the birthplace of Christ (When Herod demanded, the priests just replied "Bethlehem.") and just to fuel the Christian persecution by the Romans. There is no internal evidence that that any New Testament writings were secreted from anyone.
The temple of Revelation 11 is also most unusual as most people forget that John was told to measure THREE things: the temple, the altar and the PEOPLE. Okay, how tall were the people? How big was the temple? Why measure the altar? Why bother measuring anything if it was all still standing and everybody could just go and see it? What were the results of John's measuring? John's command to "rise, and measure" is not a building survey.
