- Fifteen years after giving the song to Kelly Clarkson, Avril Lavigne plays "Breakaway" live in public for the first time.
Breakaway was written for Avril Lavigne's 2002 debut album, Let Go, but was left off the album. It was given to Kelly Clarkson to record for the Princess Diaries 2 soundtrack released in August 2004, and was later included on Clarkson's Breakaway album in November 2004. This song was recorded live in concert at the Fox Theater in Oakland, California on September 17, 2019 during Avril Lavigne's Head Above Water tour.

It’s interesting you can tell how this song was actually Avril’s now that she sings it. There’s a quality that is unmatched when you hear a songwriter sing their own songs. I feel her story in this. Not to take away from what Kelly did with it. She is amazing as well. But I feel something more hearing Avril sing this personally.

Kelly originally didn't want the song until she was told it was to be part of the soundtrack for a movie with Julie Andrews. Then she was all the way on board.
Avril actually forgot the lyrics to this song in an interview somewhere. She did sing a few lines in the chorus I think though

This is the first time for me to hear her do self cover when she sang the lalalaladada part made me cry. I also thought this song was so meant for her. I always sang this song imaging Avril singing it. I’m so happy I finally found her singing it!!!!
No offense but Avril didn’t give it to Kelly. She gave it Samantha Moore but her label didn’t go through with it. They took it and used it for Kelly’s album.

I think it benefited of being sung by Kelly Clarkson. At the time, it sounded quite different from what Kelly had sung in the past so made people intruiged.

Well demos are demos. They're not the final product. Maybe somewhere along the way they decided the lyric "rain" was better. It doesn't necessarily mean it was because it was the "kelly verison"

I lowkey like that Kelly Clarkson got this cause this is such a good song, i felt like if they included this to Avril's album, it would be left out as b-side and not get the recognition it deserves. And at that time Avril's voice isn't fitting to this. But I'm really glad she's performing this. It's still very her song no matter what

WOW! Thanks so much for uploading this rare performance of Breakaway which Avril wrote and recorded for her debut album; "Let Go" but it never made the final album and was given to Kelly Clarkson instead who had a big hit with it.
Maybe we will finally get Avril's version next year when the 20th anniversary of "Let Go" is celebrated and I hope there are other songs released that didn't make it to the final album as well and special edition vinyl.. I'm sure there will be something in the works to mark in 2022 the 20th anniversary of "Let Go".
