I'm a biomedical engineering student, and I've been tampering with this exact same design on my own, I even made some "proof of concept" models on my own (using popsicle sticks, yarn, and a pencil) I've never even thought of the winch getting tangled! This will be extremely valuable to the project I'm working on.
Haha, I've also thought about making an exoskeleton like this and have a very similar design. I've always been interested in these kind of things and from all the exoskeletons I see online it's either an Ironman suit or something that doesn't seem effective, efficient or realistic. I see some problems in his design but the pulley system is nearly identical to mine. Also the attachment of the wire should be closer to the wrist allowing for more mechanical advantage.
Try a little harder than this guy did. I'm sure with the people your around at school, you can come up with something much better. Look at the Tesla but for inspiration. They have some truly inspiring engineers.

They're more or less a CYA for when someone does something stupid outside of the scope of the prescribed activity and gets themselves injured. Yeah it makes you completely unable to twist and wrench on his arm, basically takes all your mechanical advantage and leverage away
