  • Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre near Colorado Springs is a national historic landmark. It is named for the 400 foot tall sandstone formations that surround the area. The formation (looking from the stage) on the left is ship rock or titanic rock because it looks like a sinking ship. The formation to the right is called creation rock and the formation behind the stage is called stage rock. The park started as a tourist attraction and later sold to the government.
About 200 men from the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) SP-13-C, Company 1848 worked from 1936 to 1941 to build Red Rocks Amphitheatre. National Parks Service and the Works Progress Administration were also involved with the project. 10 boxcar loads of cement were used to put down 90,000 square feet of flagstone. The physical structure of the facility, all of the finished terracing and stone work was built by hand.
