  • Metrotrails hike featuring historic sites and covered bridges. The hike began with a visit to the Strasburg Rail Road which is the the oldest continuously operating standard-gauge railroad in the western hemisphere, as well as the oldest public utility in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Next we walked through the town of Strasburg and continued in a loop through this historic area. We walked across the Neff's Mill covered bridge, that spans the Pequea creek. It's a double Burr arch trusses design with the addition of steel hanger rods. The deck is made from oak planks. Next we crossed the Lime Valley covered bridge, which is the same type of bridge. Both bridges are on National Register of historic places. We made our way back to the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania which we toured.
Some more information on the Strasburg Rail Road.

In 1851 the Strasburg Rail Road became incorporated and soon after began carrying passengers and freight.

Although I live about an hour's drive from Stasburg, I had never been through the town which reminded me of European towns. (The pictures in the beginning of the video are from the town). Here's a link to the town's history which I found interesting. strasburgboro.org/about/history/
