  • Wisconsin's Aztalan State Park is home a mysterious pyramidal mound built by the prehistoric Native Americans who once lived there. Excavations of the site have yielded intriguing, and grisly, findings.

I grew up near here. The skeleton of the Clamshell Princess is gone from the museum. The people that work in the museum act like they don't know what you're talking about when you ask where it went to. Not very nice about it either. Maybe the sold it on eBay LOL.

@@400proofpodcast She was the princess found in the burial mound surrounded by clamshells at Aztalan state park. Allegedly her body was on display at the small museum next to the prehistoric site from which the "clamshell princess" came from. They believed her to be a sacrificial offering. Now supposedly her body is no longer in the museum and the staff there act is if they have no clue what you are talking about when you question her location. I have never seen the body or even been to the museum but i am familiar with the history there. I was just reiterating what the original poster had said in their comment.

The site's archeologist said it was his theory that Aztalan was the extreme northern outpost for the Mississippian culture, that was based in central Illinois. It's function MAY have been to provide meat to the peoples in the area of central Illinois. There was much game in south-eastern Wisconsin, at the time, and the culture in central illinois could not survive on corn alone.

Aztalan is a very special, profound, sacred, ancient place of reverence. I had the time of my life there. If you just listen and see with eyes unclouded there, the ultimate truth will reveal itself. Archeologists can guess all they want. The real truth is more wondrous and fascinating than you could ever possibly imagine.

"just listen and see with eyes unclouded" is a description of guessing. What archeologists do is the opposite of that.

Mormon 4:14 "14 And they did also march forward against the city Teancum, and did drive the inhabitants forth out of her, and did take many prisoners both women and children, and did offer them up as sacrifices unto their idol gods." This quote is from the Book of Mormon, just one example of reference to child sacrifice of prisoners taken during war. The Book of Mormon is a record of ancient inhabitants in the Americas from 600 BC up until about 420 AD. Published in 1830, translated from an ancient source by Joseph Smith. Smith was mocked and labeled a charlatan and fool for claiming to have a record. Many recent archaeological findings such as this one have confirmed the record's accuracy as to what was going on in the Americas.

The Mississippi civilization didn't exist from 600 bc to 420 ad. I think the dates you may be looking for are roughly 800 to 1600, when this particular culture actually flourished. Aztalan dates to about 1100 to 1200, and was abandoned around the same time as the city of Cahokia, in the 1300s. Additionally, most of the human sacrifices were perfomed in Cahokia, and were mostly young women aged around 15 to 25. About a third of these women were from other settlements, though a significant amount were residents of Cahokia itself.
Little else is known with certainty, but Hernando de Soto encountered them in 1540. He's probably one's best bet for a first-hand account.
