Hello Dolly has an overture because of Pearl Bailey. Her husband Louis Belson wrote it for her. You MUST hear her Broadway recording of Hello Dolly; it's wonderful!!
One of a kind voice. Big and powerful enough to belt on broadway while still soft and and lush enough for the smoothest of jazz songs. If that wasn't enough, she had UNMATCHED comedic timing. FUNNY, FUNNY, FUNNY!!!!!!
Not at all. She was a huge, huge star. And her terrific talent was adored second only to her wonderful presence. This woman was a force of nature and pretty much anyone alive at the time knew it.
@@idesdemona2336 I agree, I see 'underrated' misused so much on the net. Pearl was HUGE when I was a kid, Known and loved by millions upon millions. Now forgotten, that's a different thing, and some huge stars have gotten forgotten. Danny Kaye comes to mind...
Look *just say you know NOTHING about her but Don't disrespect her* with that word "underrated". Pearl Bailey was a Huge star and very Famous. She was highly recognized and awarded a Tony Award for her Broadway performances.

And when she went to the stage door of Hello, Dolly after the show, when she saw Pearl, she gasped "Oh, Pearlie Mae!" And Pearl enveloped her in a big embrace! In her heart, Grandma was who she was playing to! The salt of the earth; both of them!
I love Pearl Bailey. Superstar!
