R.E.M. was really incredible in their prime. They literally made 10 or so near-perfect records in a row and always have conducted themselves with dignity.
Stipe is watching Mills to make sure his timing is on target to come back into his own vocals. Lots of singers do that when singing live. Timing is everything in a live performance.
I went back and forth every other week in the late '80's on whether "Fall On Me" or "Don't Dream It's Over" were the greatest rock ballad's ever. Then, in '91, Neil Finn wrote "Fall At Your Feet" and added to the conflict. Jules Shear's "If We Never Meet Again" gets some of my votes as well. But "Fall On Me" was my first 'most beautiful ballad ever.'
Not sure if scripted or not... but the respect Michael pays Mike while singing the bridge is very commendable.. He just watches him and demands no attention for himself... very powerful
Martin Phillips of The Chills said he wanted to write songs that invoke emotions for which there are no words to describe. For me, this song does that perfectly. ❤

It's weird. I've always loved REM but rarely ever heard this song. Never had any deep feelings one way or another for it. Or so I thought. And then the song popped into my head seemingly out of nowhere. I found this video and now I keep coming back to this particular performance and realize that it's my favorite REM song and perhaps one of my favorite songs by anyone. Period. The harmonies, the band. Pure perfection.
This one really stands up to the test of time and always will! One of my all time favorite songs. Intelligent lyrics, great vocals, and creative musical passages.
Mike Mills harmonies are legendary, he's much more than a backing singer,a very talented musician who wrote night swimming,he was dabbling on the piano one afternoon and started playing it,Peter Buck walked into the room and it was his first time to hear it and he said he just stood at the back of the room In total awe and disbelief In what he was hearing, every member of this band are class acts,I hope they will go on tour again, the eagles said when hell freezes over, here's hoping, greetings from Ireland.
I hear you dude and would love to see them back on tour but unfortunately Michael Stipe when asked not that long ago that piece of his life is over and would never tour again
Doesn’t it just grieve your heart on one hand and on the other just fill it watching these guys disappear to history and yesterday. Just like many others, but boy were they a blessing.
The sound they created was so unique at the time that it still resonates today. Murmur and Reckoning were in constant repeat when I was in high school and seeing them live was absolutely incredible. Still feel a void ever since they decided to hang it up.
I saw R.E.M at least 10 times, mostly in small venues before 1990 (grew up in Georgia and went to UGA.) Wished I would have seen this one. An excellent performance by a mature band. Too bad B.B. wasn't able to stick with them for their full career.
When here this song. It reminds me of a English Girl I dated name Nicky. She went to REM when they was just starting to get big. We saw them at the Mesa Amphitheater. They were fantastic. I really thought I would marry Nicky but it wasn't meant to be. I married the love of my life and have been married since 1988. I saw this band again after married the love of my life I know that Nicky found her love, but when are young times were different but memories still linger at how much fun we had at seeing REM for the first time!😅😊
It’s nice to see a band perform live for real! It’s a lot more rare than most people realize!!!! Mostly lip syncing or heavy backing tracks these days.
Uno dei brani che apprezzo di più, ben strutturato e coinvolgente, anche grazie alle interpretazioni super Mills e Stipe, con l'accompagnamento energico dell'indimenticato Bill Rieflin alla batteria.
The music will bring us come together. Love R.E.M 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶 The music will bring us come together. Love R.E.M 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶 The music will bring us come together. Love R.E.M 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶

Except for that time Peter buck was on a flight and pissed in the galley...lol. But hey, everyone should be able to have 1 rock star moment, right?
@@musicmannsd Yes indeed! Supposedly he had eaten a bunch of Ambiens and drank a lot too? Still pretty tame by Led Zeppelin standards!
Stipes admiration and respect for Mike Mills vocals, never takes his eyes of him. Miss these guys, can’t believe it’s been 10 years now
that moment actually made me tear a bit
Agreed, Mike mills backing vocals are so much of what is REM
Stipe is watching Mills to make sure his timing is on target to come back into his own vocals. Lots of singers do that when singing live. Timing is everything in a live performance.
Absolutely!!!❤
@@patriciaguth6882 That's a load of rubbish.
That bridge ... damn ... so beautiful and Mike Mill's counter vocal ... such a beautiful song.

No one does a bridge like REM
Most beautiful REM song ever
Agreed and my favorite but it was so great when they did this Unplugged on MTV in 1991
Absolutely
I believe this was the favorite song of their manager, of all their songs.
I agree. It has all of what makes REM great, distilled into one compact, mournfully beautiful package.
It slaps all the slap
Love Mike Mills’ harmonies
Getting to buy Mike Mills a beer at The 40 Watt is one of the best moments of my life.
Magnificent.

The two Michaels = vocal perfection!!!
Martin Phillips of The Chills said he wanted to write songs that invoke emotions for which there are no words to describe. For me, this song does that perfectly. ❤
Such a perfect song....those voices, together, are heavenly.

@Rohan Wallace instablaster :)
Michael's singing voice is still one of the only sounds in the universe that makes me feel truly understood.
Can't tell you how true that is for me. Hope you have heard Michael's latest song... no time for love like now x
It's reminiscent of Ray and Dave Davies of The Kinks. Their trademark sound.
Yes, but a
part from Thom Yorke.

Oh this used to be on MTV in its early days. I have listened to this incessantly since then.
One of the greatest songs ever......we've all been there and felt that way
This one really stands up to the test of time and always will! One of my all time favorite songs. Intelligent lyrics, great vocals, and creative musical passages.
I remember seeing them in the summer of 82. One of six bands for six bucks on Navy Island in St. Paul. It was magic.
My favorite REM song.
My favourite REM song. ❤❤❤
This song ....utter shimmering brilliance. What a great, great band
Well said.
Someday, I will play this song as well as Peter Buck does. One of my favorite songs of all time.

The chorus is so addictive.
R.E.M. miss you trully.
Amazing band. Truly 1 in a million.
Doesn’t it just grieve your heart on one hand and on the other just fill it watching these guys disappear to history and yesterday. Just like many others, but boy were they a blessing.
It's a bit sad. They're in the RR HOF but yeah. People tell me they've heard of them through their parents.
One of my favorite songs of all time.
Just beautiful 😍
This song evokes the spirit of Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys - the melodies are rich, magical and sublime,
Near Wild Heaven was their most Beach Boys song.
One of the greatest bands ever!
Peter Buck is so cool he walks around like he's all alone❤️😆
Ahhhhh Yah 💯 to me this is REM'S best tune, off of Lifes a Rich Pageant & Superman is also a Kikkin Tune on that album as well🎶🎵🙌🩵💙👏👏😎
One of the best bands of all time - and unlike other artists - knew when to quit!
Try to find someone in your life who looks at you the way Mike Stipes looks at Mike Mills during his solo verse and you'll be truly lucky!! Such love
Mills absolutely BODIES the vocals in this performance, sublime!
Mike Mills is the John Denver of REM. Love his dainty little vocals.
Evan Hansen yes! Plus he is SO underrated
Life ain't nothin' but a funny funny riddle
ROFL. Great call! These guys are so awesome!
Have you heard the Death Cab for Cutie cover? If you love this song, you need to hear the cover.
@@1218Draco There is actually a live version from the Todos Santos Music Festival where both Mike Mills and Peter Buck play with them.
My absolute favorite REM song!!!!!❤❤❤❤
1:31 i think it is the beautiful part of this song
That part of this song is one of my favorite moments of music I’ve ever heard.
It’s magic.

What an incredible band.
My favorite REM song
Beautiful, still.
I like all versions of the song, shows a very capable range.. amazing
God, I love this song. Sounds like Heaven
Such a great talent of the 4 of them great song too
As composers....they were Giants...stand next to the 60's and 70's best...easily.
Superb on so many levels
Beautiful..
Thank you REM. Musical perfection.
Lifes Rich Pageant is on my desert island disc list.. Brilliant.

This is beautiful for a million different reasons already discussed. I’m just happy to have seen it.
Amazing band. I enjoy their músic in two concerts in Mexico. The years 2000 and 2004.
My favourite band.

Rem is my fav! Since always! But in this particular video Michael's voice slipped, so I think he was looking for Mike's support! ❤️
La più bella canzone che hanno fatto.
Bleed the sky. Thats it!
One of my favorites, Mikey has a great voice but, u don’t hear him alone in most songs
You hear him in Texarcana in the Out of Time album
@@anthonycatalano5057 and Near Wild heaven
