Obviously the perfect day with Laurentius would include a mud bath in the great swamp along with some some stories over some estus soup. Great video, and remember, don’t you dare go hollow.
I've seen a lot of these stories already with other loretubers but its nice to watch someone come up in this community. You're putting in work and tbh that sub count should be higher, but keep going Hawkshaw, you clearly got the passion for these tales
I really enjoyed the contrast between him and Cornyx of Dark Souls 3, which is also friendly in his own way, but also could not be more different than Laurentius, while also having a very nice charisma of his own.
Feels like there are some dropped ideas for Laurentius that were either cut for time or that only made sense as part of an older version of the game. There are other characters across the Soulslikes who fit his 'amiable yet tragically doomed' archetype who feel a lot more complete. Maybe he would have been more involved with Izalith but as that got pared down, so did his role in it, to the point that he ends up losing relevance very early.
A long time ago, somebody put makeshift nametags on the deli slicers at my work. Whoever ut was, they chose to name one of them "Ostrava of Boletaria" and another "Laurentius of the Great Swamp". I keep meaning to make a name tag for another slicer and call it "Malenia, Blade of Miquella".
*3:28* Do we really know how _anyone_ becomes undead in Dark Souls? Do they wake up like that one day, or do they have to die first, only to then wake up? What mechanism awakens them - the mere passage of time? Someone sitting down at a magic fire nearby? I've never really thought too hard about these things because they seem to be more ludonarrative resonance than anything fully explicable in-lore, but at some level it is strange that not only the source of the Undead Curse is a slight mystery (though it was possibly caused by the First Sin, which I've always understood to be Gwyn's "successful" attempt to prolong the Age of Fire rather than The Witch's failed attempt), but the simple mechanics of how anyone becomes undead are left unexplained as well
That's legit some of the best voice acting I've ever heard. Ever. Props to the VA & Hawkshaw making this charming biography of someone we'd be proud to call "friend".
"I'm still an able pyromancer" does not sound like bravado. It sounds like a man unsure of his own abilities trying to convince himself he still is capable.
Laurentius is my favorite DS1 character, he's the reason why I tried pyromancy. I have his flame +15 and always have it equipped. Sad to see how his quest ended because his dialogue "When I gave you that flame, I gave you a part of myself. Please take good care of it."
this is one of those stories i never really experienced, never being a magic user i tend not to talk to a guy teaching magic very much.... i regret that now
When I first heard that he goes to blighttown and becomes hollow I couldn't bring myself to go to kill him, so I didn't but your words made me realise I let him suffer and his flame I carried, got me through the rest of dark souls, he truly stayed with me through out my journey. Thank you dark souls, thank you
So at 1:47 you posit the idea of Quelana's pyromancy being passed down from Salaman. In Dark Souls 3 when shown the Quelana pyromancy tome Corynx(Pyromancer Teacher) says this "But I regret to say, I cannot accept this. Quelana's pyromancies are for witches, and must be learned from a mistress. But thank you, for allowing me to peer upon such a thing. If only I were a woman" while its doesn't mean this was the case for Salaman i just thought it notable that a master-student chain for Quelana is explicitly mentioned with a male student and this "tradition?"was also specifically brought up. In addition its mentioned Salaman brought pyromancy in a new direction, perhaps due to not passing Quelana's older spells down. Anyway liked the video thanks if you read this.
I still remember telling him about my new pyromancy because he was so curious 😢 never again my beautiful friend, I'll still try to save you from yourself every time. I'm sorry.

Whilst he is not my favourite character in Dark Souls (Onionbros 4lyfe) I have a special reverence for him for many of the reasons in which you have stated in the video. But also due to the events of my first play through of the game, wherein if it wasn't through his rescue and subsequent sharing of his flame, i simply would not have been able to progress any further than i had already. I had yet to "git gud" and as such was proffering my backside to anything more troublesome than your average hollow (for real, defeating the butchers was a minor miracle in of itself) and thanks to my new found ability to impersonate the USAF in the skies above Vietnam, I had the crutch i sorely needed to give me the time and souls (because I had previously just been randomly statting and the concept of a build was wholly alien to me) in order to overcome what otherwise would have been an all you can eat buffet on my ass. However thanks to my ignorance of things, I never discovered the greater teachings of pyromancy and his life was never in danger on that run.
Laurentius sharing the flame with the player always reminded me of that one part in the Little Prince where the Prince befriends or "tames" the Fox. Using Pyromancy in DS1 will always remind me of my dear friend.
What about the theory Quelana manipulating him with her "Undead Rapport" pyromancy? As is speculated she used it to manipulate Eingyi into poison the Fair Lady (as he knows of Quelana but dosen't remember her, and the Fair Lady thought her dead)
You've planned the perfect day with Laurentius, what do you do?

But he was just too likeable to cut out entirely XD
Maybe because they learnt to develop the character later
These new videos are great to see ❤
A long time ago, somebody put makeshift nametags on the deli slicers at my work.
I've never really thought too hard about these things because they seem to be more ludonarrative resonance than anything fully explicable in-lore, but at some level it is strange that not only the source of the Undead Curse is a slight mystery (though it was possibly caused by the First Sin, which I've always understood to be Gwyn's "successful" attempt to prolong the Age of Fire rather than The Witch's failed attempt), but the simple mechanics of how anyone becomes undead are left unexplained as well
thank you so much for those videos. I love to just watch and binge them. great job as always!
thank you for not giving up on my fav dark souls game in the series!
That's... that's literally bravado.
YEEEESSS!!!! Ahh man I Love you’re Dark Souls Lore Theories! They’re my Favorite
Always excited to watch the next Hawkshaw upload. Thanks so much for the content!
I've been waiting for this video for over 10 years. Long live my pyro bro
your ds1 content is on another level, keep it up
Man... Laurentius really needs a hug!
Laurentius is my favorite DS1 character, he's the reason why I tried pyromancy. I have his flame +15 and always have it equipped.
Sad to see how his quest ended because his dialogue "When I gave you that flame, I gave you a part of myself. Please take good care of it."
this is one of those stories i never really experienced, never being a magic user i tend not to talk to a guy teaching magic very much.... i regret that now
why the fuck am I crying. he was too good for that world
oh shit! another amazing video about DS1
When I first heard that he goes to blighttown and becomes hollow I couldn't bring myself to go to kill him, so I didn't but your words made me realise I let him suffer and his flame I carried, got me through the rest of dark souls, he truly stayed with me through out my journey.
Thank you dark souls, thank you
Mad respect to the VA for this dude. Really sold the "broski" vibe.
Your content is top tier, thank you!
16:50 i love that lil pondering on the meaning of flame; as something to bring safety and warmth to those you care for
I still remember telling him about my new pyromancy because he was so curious 😢 never again my beautiful friend, I'll still try to save you from yourself every time. I'm sorry.
My cat is named after this absolute beauty of a npc
I love Laurentius so much 🥺 I'm so happy to see him get the appreciation he deserves ❤️
Thank you for dedicating a video to the biggest homie of the whole series, dont you dare go hollow!
I loved this guy, best fireboy
YES THE DARK SOULS 1 LORE IS BACK
Pyro bro was so cool, I really hate to say no to him but I can't let him go to blighttown just to die.
Babe wake up, new Hawkshaw video just dropped
It puts me in mind of that song, 'The Flame', by Cheap Trick. That's a song that suits this character.
I had enjoyed your content when I stumbled upon it in the past but, admittedly, only seriously started watching your stuff recently.
I clearly subscribed at the right time because I've now devoured all of your DS1 content and, by the First Flame, you've released a video on the best boy! \`[I]/ Thank you!
I see you installed the Bright Souls mod so we can see each pixel in all it's glorious incandescence. Laurentius is great. Always enjoy your videos.
Thank you, Laurentius!! We love you
That head scratch... You were trying to get Eingy's special dialogue weren't you?🤣
Laurentius sharing the flame with the player always reminded me of that one part in the Little Prince where the Prince befriends or "tames" the Fox. Using Pyromancy in DS1 will always remind me of my dear friend.
Fun fact: Laurentius sits because he doesn’t want us to smell his swamp ass.
Top tier content. Commenting for algorithm
Great video, never played through DS but love the lore and video presentations like this.
Its funny, that beeing selfless breaks us in the end, i know it well...
You still make DS1 lore? Amazing, day saved
Love this type of video with this guy!
I never thought about it but quelana might be the only teacher of a school of magic they also created.
Let's go, Hawkshaw Dark Souls video!
Another good Dark souls video, thanks :)
What about the theory Quelana manipulating him with her "Undead Rapport" pyromancy? As is speculated she used it to manipulate Eingyi into poison the Fair Lady (as he knows of Quelana but dosen't remember her, and the Fair Lady thought her dead)
just got back into dark souls again recently and specificly came to this channel for some lore glad to see videos.
