Holding Back the Years" is a song by the British soul and pop band Simply Red, released as the third single from their debut studio album, Picture Book (1985). Holding Back the Years was shot in 1985 in Whitby, North Yorkshire and we go back to the film locations to see how they have changed over the years by comparing them with today. Film locations Revisited.
Holding Back the Years reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number two on the UK Singles Chart. "Holding Back the Years" had initially been released in the UK the year before, reaching number 51. The song was nominated in the category of Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals at the 29th Annual Grammy Awards.
Awesome. I loved the thing about Mick Hucknell. Omg,I have to share this story. My colleague went to Manchester on a training course and was staying at the Hotel Piccadilly which Mick Hucknell owned. Mike was at the bar and insisted on buying this guy a beer cos he was on expenses! Mike was chatting to the guy and asked him what he did and he said I am a singer in a band. Anyway,it came out that it was Simply Red and I think the song that went to no one was ‘Moneys too tight to mention’. Mike didn’t have a clue who this guy was and he insisted on buying beers until Mick Hucknell stopped him.
I was on the same training course but I had gone out with other people. I got back to the hotel to have a drink with Mike and I knew it was Mick Hucknell. He was just so laid back and so nice.
What are very interesting story? Sandra, I think I'm great right? Your friend was going to buy the drinks not recognising Mick. Anyway, I never knew I had an hotel so very around. Great story and you have the privilege of having some private time in his presence. Well done 👍 Alan
@@MotorHomeBeepBeep thank you.x My friend Mike didn’t have a clue who he was lol…😂
Really enjoyed that Alan ...Love Simply Red ... How Beautiful is Whitby
Yes Debbie, They picked a good place for the video. It's very quiet. An old worldly is Whitby. Thank you, Alan

Very interesting I loved simply red in the 80s. Didn't know it was filmed in whitby and Goathland 2 beautiful places love from Holmfirth West Yorkshire 💙 💚
Hi Gill a lot of the locals that I spoke to in Whitby remember it being filmed. And the train station is probably best out for Harry Potter. Great to see you as always. Alan
Hi Alan 😊 This was great, something very different. I now however, feel ancient LOL. It doesn't seem "that" long since this was released - just shows you that good music never ages, especially the 80's - the best time in my opinion. Thanks Alan for another great video 😊
Hi Karin when you think about it, the music industry is a beautiful business because she released a song and people never get tired of listening to it. It goes on and it really does not feel like 38 years. I agree 👍
One of my favourites, talented guy and what a voice, is it really nearly forty years were have the years gone Alan. Scary.
James, it is scary. We better make the most of every day ☺️
Hello Alan my friend. Well that was different from the norm and it was very enjoyable to watch. I love looking at old pictures and films of places and seeing how they have changed over the years. Well done Alan keep up the good work, can’t wait to see the next one 👏👏👏👍
Hi Psy I'm very pleased to enjoyed it. I like the process of finding the spots of myself and then looking at their history in this case of the record. Like you said, it makes a nice change now and again, Thank you for the encouragement. Have a good weekend my friend. Alan

Such an important historical musical investigation !!! Thanks a lot !!!
Hi Nina x
l spent many a week on holiday in Whitby in the 80s and 90s . Anyway one weekend in the 80s / 90s the Goths were there holding a goths weekend with a Dracula theme. l went out on the lash to sample the fine ales in as many cosy pubs a possible . Well one pub locked the doors and pulled the curtains down and we carried on drinking and chatting ( had to be quiet in case anyone heard us outside !) .Anyway about 2. AM l was a bit worse for wear ,l decide to call it a night and was let out the backdoor . Well a short cut to my digs and bed was straight through that churchyard . l had forgotten the Goths were there in the town ,all though l had seen them in the town walking around all day . What l didn't know was , because it was full moon that night these Goths had decided to hold a 2 AM "Dracula group meeting " in that Church Yard ! l entered this Churchyard and didn't see this group of Goths as they were all wearing black - but l did notice candles , anyway l turned to my left and as l saw movement and saw a tall skinny guy wearing at a big black top hat all dressed in black with a strange white face rising up from one of the flat headstones( l think he had got tired and gone for a lie down on one of the flat tomb stones ?) . l shit my pants and started running, looking back l didn't see a group of Goths all dressed in black in front of me and went full pelt straight into them ! l must have been out for some seconds as l woke up on the floor looking up at people looking down at me . l don't know who or what l hit but l had a huge lump on my forehead the next morning . l thought the Goths were gonna get funny but they helped me up and asked me if l was alright . l said sorry and that was it !
Whitby looks gorgeous! I wanna stay there for a little holiday 😃😃 SR are one of my fave groups and I have had the pleasure of seeing them live, the sound quality was second to none 👌👍

Hi Tracy It means a lot that you enjoyed it. Thank you. It was something different for me. Next time you go to Whitby you can see the locations yourself and have a little sing if you want :-)
Interesting Video Alan, a change is always good 👍
Thank you, John, when I do the Graves I find each one interesting because it's a completely different person, but it's right it's nice to change the angle sometimes. Just for fun. Thank you mate
I really enjoyed this video and i had no idea Simply Red filmed there in Whitby. The last time i was there was in 1997 watching Heartbeat being filmed in a lovely part of the country X
You're right, Jenny heartbeat has to be the biggest program that affected the tourism in Whitby and I'm graduated a great time watching. Maybe I should do that as my film in the future. Thank you, Alan
That was so, so good Alan! Love looking at places then and now - look forward to the next one- take care mate x
I'm extremely happy that you think so Carol because I wasn't sure when you do one type of film. You never know if it will upset people if you change a bit, but that's kind of you 👍
Oh no mate you know what they say- variety is the spice of life! Carry on!
Great video Alan loved it xx ❤
That's very encouraging Maggie. Thank you
Ahh man I wish they'd let you film from the window! Such a pretty view of the little harbor.
A other brilliant video Alan 👍.
A little different good for Whitby tourism Thank you very much John. Very kind 😉
Really loved this one Alan ❤
Will that super Maureen, that's made me very happy 😁
Hi Alan how are you keeping and thanks for sharing another video keep up the good work
Hi Hence in the scheme of things I'm pretty good. I hope you are. See you soon. Alan
I always wondered where the sites were, thanks for showing us!
And if you ever go to Whitby you can find them easily now. Rachel 👍
Hi Alan , what memories you have invoked in me , many time have I walked up the hill to get my kippers from Fortunes (best kippers on the planet) and never realised that Mick Hucknall filmed there . A great new idea from you I can’t wait to see where you will take us next time .
Well that's great Thank you Alan. You never sure whether people are going to like something different but I think overall it's a nice idea. What a change but thank you for the encouragement 🙏 the one thing I wish that I done is spun round to show the view. It's great from that part of Henrietta Street but you can't do everything. Thank you, Alan
Wow this was interesting, we visited Witby at the end of June, didn’t realise this song video from Simply Red was filmed there, great job Alan getting all this info 😀
Hi Fran You can easily visit the location yourself now if you go back, thank you for there. Great comment. Kind of you. Alan
My husband put his drone up at the top of the Abbey and we have a super aerial view over Witby
That was really enjoyable. I love Whitby and love Simply Red. I've seen him live in a concert in Hyde Park. It was a fabulous show and his voice was wonderful. Some years ago now but he's still good. Great band as well. Thanks for the trip down memory lane Alan.
Hi Mag they ask a fantastic voice I would love to see them myself. What a great memory for you! Hyde park Ava. Love the weekend. Alan
Blimey you walk fast Alan 😁 Oooh, I love this video so, so much - the idea, the flashbacks, the story 👏 plus Whitby looks so interesting. You are going to do more, right? I'm trying to think of where you might go next 🤔
Hi Donna is the absolute truth that I was covering for one of the cleaners for 5 weeks and it really made me feel a lot fitter because I had to do so much walking up and down the hills 😜 I will do some more films like this but I still love the grapes and the biographies but if you think of anywhere let me know. I might do the Railway Children next. My next video will be back familiar turf every pun intended.... 😉
@@MotorHomeBeepBeep Intriguing 😁 Am desperately trying to think of anything filmed at the summit of Snowdon or Ben Nevis seeing as you are now a speed-hiker😁 I'll think on! 👍
Great one Alan. We’re off to Whitby in October so will keep a look out.
Fantastic Johnny have a walk along Henrietta Street and you'll see them 👍
@@MotorHomeBeepBeep definitely will check out the kipper house.
Nice one Alan.
Cheers, Simon I was going to do Coldplay but they only did in front of the abbey 😜
Most excellent Alan, Simply love the soulfully beautiful sounds of the man and his music. Seemed to be underated and didn't get the major notariety he deserved. Wishing him well and great blessings. From So Cal. By way of High Wycombe 👍
They just have a beautiful voice. Daniel, but I think you did very well for himself. They've just announced their 40th anniversary tour and I went and pretty sure through High Wickham when I was filmed in the London. Have a great weekend. Thank you, Alan
Hello Alan, great video, i realy want to know this place, im from Brazil and i like to watch this music video, the europe is very different from Latin america places! Keep pushing!

Well observed Ange it does. You had your thinking head on. Well done but I enjoyed it and it makes a change. Thank you, Alan
Hi Alan,
I used to go to Whitby and Goathland alot many years ago. Love the place, but be careful of the sheep at Goathland, they love to see what sandwiches you have in your bag, as my mother in law found out. Very hilarious.
🐑🥪
Hello Caroll I know exactly what you mean. I was on the moors near howarth with my partner and her sister and my partner got stampeded on for the same reason and we couldn't stop laughing. Have a great weekend 🤣
The sheep at Goathland love egg and cress sandwiches. The sheep chased Lillian to the phone box.
I got a picture of the offending sheep.
Made a story out of it.
Bloody hell I never knew the video was made in Whitby, I should have recognised it, visited a couple of times when I was younger And then I started work for a haulage contract delivering flour from Newcastle every couple of weeks to 3 or 4 bakers and butchers in the early 1980s, I think one the bakers is still there Elizabeth Botham's?
Hello W absolutely you got that totally right. They're still the big kingpin regarding bakery in Whitby. Thank you mate
Hello alan hope your ok from Leeann
Hi Leeann I'm fine. I will release the film later this week. I was just a little bit busy last week. Hope you're having some fun. Alan
@MotorHomeBeepBeep yes fine thank you 😊
He has family here in barrow his grandad lived a 2 minute walk away i was stood at the bus stop watching him cut his grandads hedge haha
When I saw it was Simply Red, I was desperately hoping it was the grave of the front man. I loath that guy.
Really , why ?
@@debbiecocker7071 Hated him for years. Cannot stand the bloke.
@@CRISIS550166you've wasted energy hating someone you don't even know?? That's pathetic.
@@infinitesam5880 No, it's comedy...
OMG I THOUGHT HE HAD DIED 😮😮😮
I don't know why but I found that funny. I can imagine Mick reading this I can see the expression 🤣
