    I actually appreciated the sidetrack discussion in the beginning about what manufacturers are doing nowadays :)
    I've been researching for a new fridge since my Samsung died after only 3 years. I came across your Kitchenaid 704 review while trying to narrow down my choices and it helped me nail it down to that model. I'm ready to pull the trigger, but am afraid that I might be buying a four and a half thousand dollar fridge, only to have it break down after about 5 years and need to replace it again.

      @@globalfamily8172 Yes, Bosch seems to have a very good reputation for reliability. But according to some of the larger appliance retailers who have their own service departments and collect data, Bosch refrigerators don't seem to have a particularly low service rate. blog.yaleappliance.com/the-least-serviced-most-reliable-appliance-brands
      I do like the Bosch model in this video, it was my second choice. But the exterior and interior design of the KRFC704 won me over although I would have otherwise preferred this Bosch model. The black stainless steel of Bosch appliances are also much much more resistant to scratching and damage compared to other brands' black stainless steel, due to actually having a darker makeup rather than having a dark coating that reveals a shiny inside when damaged.
      I think a bigger concern than which brand is more reliable is having a whole-house surge protector installed in the home's electric panel. That will eat up any voltage surges that so often destroys appliances that would otherwise have been fine. My last Samsung fridge got an early death due to a voltage surge from a power outage event. I spent a few hundred bucks with my local electrician to ensure that wouldn't happen to anything in my house again. Whenever there is a big storm and power outages in my area, the appliance service calls apparently get a huge spike up due to all the appliances having been damaged by voltage surges that occur when the power comes back on.

    We have an 18-year-old GE Monogram that has run perfectly but seems like the compressor is going out. Would you put $1200 in repairs in it and try to save it, or spend $3000 on a new cheaper fridge that may last 5-7 years?

    • @theappliancereview
      @theappliancereview  2 роки тому

      That’s a bit of a conundrum. That older unit isn’t as efficient and is a bit antiquated but it’s probably more reliable. I personally would want to replace it with a dual compressor refrigerator but that’s because we keep a lot of open produce stored in the fridge. Dual compressor refrigerators have a greater humidity (in the fridge) than a dual evaporator refrigerator. But even a dual evaporator refrigerator would offer a pretty decent upgrade over what you currently have.

    • @camilla6110

      @@theappliancereview Thanks for your reply and input. We don’t keep much produce as we have a separate mini fridge in the pantry for that. We went ahead and replaced the compressor on it yesterday and so far so good, but time will tell. Our wonderful fridge repairman said, “Thank you for saving this machine-it is well worth it, even if it needs tweaking over time”. He told me if we didn’t fix it, he would buy it, fix it himself and love it for years to come, so we figured we might as well try, and as refrigerators go, we are kind of attached to it, especially when we saw what was out there, and that much of it isn’t even available if we DID want it, which we really didn’t. ☺️

      Having owned one of those for close to 15 years I’d definitely recommend the Fisher Paykel. However, it doesn’t have dual compressors like the Bosch or even dual evaporators like a lot of other modern refrigerators. If you keep a lot of fresh (open) produce in your fridge and not shrink wrapped or sealed containers, I’d suggest considering the Bosch over the F&P. It is entirely possible that my Fisher Paykel’s reliability and long life are because it lacks these additional components. 🤷🏻‍♂️

      Loud is a relative term. I wouldn’t consider them loud at all. All modern refrigerators use a variable speed compressor design that some people perceive to be loud when on high. Modern home designs tend have open floor plans and solid surface floors that allow sound to carry pretty easily. Most people learn to tune it out but some people have too much time on their hands and like to pick at things until their brain bleeds. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    I bought this fridge slightly less than a year ago and it is a beautiful looking product. The problem I have with it is the temperatures that you can select are nowhere near what you’re actually going to get. The crisper drawers are advertised to get down to 29°F should you choose, and the refrigerator section is selectable to 33°. Using Fluke laboratory quality temperature measuring equipment, I was only able to get 36 or 37° measuring actual product and air temperature when set to 33°. Although you probably wouldn’t want everything at 33 degrees, The reserve cooling capacity would be helpful when the enviro in the summertime, when opening and closing of the doors is more frequent. Bosch has been out three times and said the refrigerator is operating to specifications. How is it possible that they can sell a product advertised to perform a certain way when it doesn’t and refuse to do anything about it? I am not happy with this as this was not a inexpensive unit and I would’ve never purchased this had I known the unit could not achieve the temperatures selected. . One of the service techs that came out said all these new refrigerators all use a butane based R 800 refrigerant that is not as good as the older Freon-based products. This might have something to do with the cooling capabilities and yes, this particular unit was made in China. Another reason why I would’ve never purchased his refrigerator had I looked at the origin sticker. On the plus side, the unit is extremely quiet, much like the Bosch dishwashers and the icemaker makes a lot of nicely sized ice cubes. I am continuing my quest to get Bosch to replace this unit, hopefully with one built in Germany if that is actually taking place

    As I am watching you, it occurs to me that Bosch, a German firm, has its refrigerators made in China. The fridges are designed to last about 7-8 years on average but often last less. Its products are made with inferior parts ( according to third party technicians). So, cheap Chinese labor with cheap parts at exorbitant profits to Bosch. But here is the rub, after 7 years of use North American landfills are left to deal with the resulting refuse. They make the money, we deal with the fallout. Nice deal for the Germans and Chinese.

The factory doesn’t make it easy to service so you end up paying for 3 hours of labor. Add in the initial diagnostics visit and you’re all in at around $1000.00 to fix it.
