Toxic masculinity is toxic to you too- it’s the whole “men don’t cry, pussy. Sleep with a hundred women or you’re gay”.
      That’s toxic masculinity.
Healed masculinity is where you have a .. idk. Are a person.

Staying mentally engaged is a big one. Cultivate hobbies and interests outside of work. I honestly think most men don't know what to do with themselves, particularly after retirement, and just end up dying of boredom.

I think the social element, for me anyway, is very important. Having a young family these days I dont get out much, but at least twice a year I make a point of having an afternoon into evening out with one of my best friends. Things will be talked about that you dont want to speak to the wife about, grievances can be ventiláted, any issues at home can be talked about etc (whilst watching a game or two of football and partaking in some refreshments). Afterwards I always feel much more relaxed for a few weeks. The social stuff is really important for mental wellbeing...

Not only shift work but more and more companies want you to be flexible for them and work whenever they need you in their needed time which takes away all your personal life. Almost none of my former coworkers made it to retirement and the few that did died within a few years later after poisoning themselves with smoke, alcohol and who knows what else due to extreme stress. Nr 1 cause of death by far cancer. Remember we for them are not human beings but numbers... Social security numbers. Sad.
I'm happy for me it's over. It's a new life that I'm living.

Companies that insist that you be available whenever do that because staff members allow them to do that. Provide unquestionable value to your position and you’ll be able to create hours that are acceptable to both sides.

@@barrysmith8193 sadly not in these times. They answer (like my former company) that you are here freewillingly. If you don't like it you may leave. They can hire plenty of jobless people ready to get the job.

What you said about shifts and sleep is so true. I worked shifts at Heathrow Airport for years. I became quite unwell in the end. I gave it up 3 or 4 years ago and I can honestly say that I have seldom felt better. I now enjoy a regular bedtime regime and it transformed my life for the better.

than those who do not work shift work

Thanks for this Ash. Great stuff, as ever. I have always brought my son up to be a gentleman. However, now more than ever, the notion of 'gentlemanhood' is more under siege than it has ever been, and from all sides.
I take sad note of the following: "The leading cause of death for males aged 35 to 49 years changed from IHD [Ischaemic Heart Disease] between 2001 and 2010, to suicide and injury or poisoning of undetermined intent from 2011 to 2015, to accidental poisoning in more recent years.
Suicide and injury or poisoning of undetermined intent was the leading cause of death for both males and females aged 20 to 34 years in the UK, for all years observed. Males had over three times the number of deaths from suicide compared with females for each year observed in this age group. In 2018, there were 1,233 male deaths from suicide and injury or poisoning of undetermined intent (27.1% of total male deaths for those aged 20 to 34 years) and 353 female deaths from suicide and injury or poisoning of undetermined intent (16.7% of total female deaths for those aged 20 to 34 years)." Source: ONS.
I think that the strongest thing that we need to emphasise is that being a gentleman comes from within and is not imposed from outside. Nothing can take it from you: not losing your wife, children, job, health. It is like a precious flower which you must cultivate every day. Thank you for helping in this process Ash.

Outstanding sentiment and the facts are clear. As a parent of a young man i am acutely aware of the challenges of raising a gentleman in this era of falling social responsibility and subjugated values.

For fitness and mental health don't underestimate plain old walking. After i got out of college I was in between jobs so I would go down to the local lake every day and fish. I made a study of it, drawing out a map of the lake and marking where I caught fish, etc. It was rather difficult trudging around it in heavy rubber boots but one day I looked down and noticed I had a six pack!
Years later I had two little Scotty dogs who met me at the door every day wanting to go on a walk. I would be exhausted but couldn't say no. I lived across from a college campus and it really was a beautiful walk. As tired as I was before the walk I always felt better afterward. Walking not only keeps you fit but is great for your mental health too. If you want to get in shape get a little dog who demands a walk every day...lol

"Spending all that money to get hands that look like a griffin's talons, sometimes." -I just about fell off my chair laughing, mate.
But you're absolutely right, Ash, many men do virtually nothing to take care of their face, their hair, or their hands, and the truth of the matter is that women notice all these things.
And safeguarding one's mental health through reading, taking up a hobby, getting some fresh air and daily exercise, through something as simple as walking, is of paramount importance.
It's also extremely important to cultivate the company of a group of friends. I join a group of English gentlemen for coffee and croissants every morning as part of my daily walk downtown.
One thing I might add here is that men should be wearing sunglasses to protect their eyes against UV light whether it's during the height of summer, or a bright winter day when there's a lot of glare off snow and ice.

Thanks for this little video essay on self care!
It's supremely important but if you browse the topic here (id est youtube) you'll find a ton of machismo based toxic approaches to it along with the more rational ones.
Mind you I also did not truly care enough until I almost lost my life to... well a lorry not giving a s*** if there was anyone on the zebra crossing, and as a consequence I had to re-evaluate a couple of things in my life and the general lookout I held.
Especially in light of some of the broken things in my body from and in consequence I really *had* to start to take more care.
But I also started to dress well in this context, why should I not look my best every day? Might be dead on the morrow - not in a negative, pessimistic way, it's not scary, Ive been on the edge of existence for minutes and it was an interesting experience ;) but why not take care and do whatever possible to the best possible and acceptable? Not going nuts and pushing myself towards unrealistic goals, just doing what can be achieved and what's worth the effort.
Hand care- oh hand care - *thank you* for pointing this out, it's often regarded as effeminate but my work (orthopaedic shoemaker) requires at least some basic hand care and all kinds of different gloves and certainly some protection for the skin at the days start and some care after work - working with leather and heat and chemicals all day has thought me about the importance of hand care quite effectively. ;)
I really like the fact that you mention (well not explicitly, but it's pretty clear you understand this) to key to all of this: it's all the same essentially, everything is interconnectedand if you start at one point, in my experience, you'll be almost automatically drawn into taking more and more care of more and more fields and so it comes together, took me a couple of years certainly.
    => addendum:
One of my greatest moment of enjoyment are going to the barbers and get my hair and beard done- especially if you are a beard wearing gent it's thoroughly enjoyable and it just looks better than I ever managed myself.
Best regards and enjoy your stay!

My exercise is, for various reasons, restricted to walking and a dog is great for getting you out walking, I'm 66 and walk anything up to 12 miles at a time with my dog, more usually 3-4 miles at a time 2 or 3 times a day. Dogs can be great help with depression, mine helps with my PTSD and I know other PTSD sufferers who say the same.
In fact I know people who say they wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for their dog.

Many of the larger police and fire departments in the US now have people who specialize in PTSD. If you have come into a violent situation or a major fire, there is always PTSD. It is not something to ignore and can be treated. Departments with such personnel find that officers come to highly value them.

    Great advice - thank you.
I'd like to share a few points that I've learned on my life journey so far . . .
Regarding your advice on protecting yourself from the sun - don't forget your eyes. Wear sunglasses. Not just when its a cloudless sunny day, but in all bright conditions. Those UV rays are not just harmful to your skin.
And with reference to your point on physical well-being, I'd like to pass on some advice from a colleague of mine who is of a similar age to myself - fifty seven - and which I've not heard anywhere else.
He is a regular gym-goer, and his goal at the gym is not to build muscle or improve cardio-vascular capacity, but to maintain mobility and balance as he gets older.
We can't take for granted that the things we can do now - like climbing stairs or simply getting out of a chair - we will be able to do in later life if we just neglect our muscles and joints.

    • @TheChapsGuide
      @TheChapsGuide  2 роки тому +1

Great content as always Ash, very diverse content that’s important for men…thank you. I agree with all your points, one question - I also use moisturisers etc, do you think it’s too much to use an after shave balm after shaving and then a moisturiser on top of it?
Another tip as part of mental health that works for me is visualisation. Many times as you say life can be tough and feels like we are far away from our ideal positions….visualisation and affirmations are important, so we mentally picture our ideals and affirm them. I believe we attract situations in the dark room of our mind (just like where pictures are produced….in dark rooms). Every morning I wake up and thank God for being blessed favoured, knowing the right doors will open for me 🙏🏻

Hello, Ash; great advice! I’ve been a tobacco smoker for well over three decades (pipe, cigars, cigarettes) and am looking to quit - or at least, significantly moderate - the habit. If I may ask: did you ever smoke, and if so, for how long? Any tips from personal experience on kicking the habit?

    • @TheChapsGuide

I have never been a smoker, so unfortunately have only limited advice to offer. My mother was a smoker from early adulthood and gave up the habit in her 50s using raw willpower.
These days there are many medical assistance options that can really help, but a profound desire to quit is still the starting point. If you are ready to rid yourself of tobacco, I suggest the next step would be a chat with your pharmacist.

Which of the two is more formal or classic and which is considered more fashionable.
