Western Maryland 1309: Articulated in an Allegheny Autumn

- Throughout the month of October, the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad ran their recently-restored 2-6-6-2 Mallet number 1309 extensively. In its first fall back under steam, Western Maryland 1309 pulled 5 trips between Cumberland, Maryland and Frostburg, Maryland each week. In addition to the steep mountain grades, the spectacular fall colors allowed for great shots along the 16-mile journey. The locomotive put on a great show and closed out the busy 2022 fall season in style. On this day, 1309 was equipped with a beautiful New York Central 6 Chime, a whistle that would have found a home on a New York Central Hudson, Mohawk, or Niagara in the steam era. So sit back, relax, and enjoy mountain railroading in the autumn with Western Maryland 1309.

Beautifully done, Mark. Your panning is great.
Thank you very much for the kind words, Tom! Panning is definitely one of the things I have been working on lately, a good fluid head tripod really helps!
Wmsr 1309 wearing a new york central 6 chime whistle
Chesapeake & Ohio 1309 is another beautiful big locomotive.
Indeed it is
@@MPT_Productions That’s Right. I’m going to be visiting the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento, California on Veterans Day.
New York Central 6 chime.
Great catches and awesome video
Thank you!
You're welcome
Incredible video. Top notch panning and camera work!
Thank you very much!
Wow! Great video!!
Thank you very much, Evan!
Good stuff Mark!
Thank you, Ty!
7:20 Western Maryland 1309 sounds like Riolu Angry Whistle
Excellent video! That shot at Parkersburg Rd with the falling leaves is just wonderful.
Thank you very much! Parkersburg was a favorite of mine as well. Glad you enjoyed!
Very nice work Mark I need to see 1309 sometime
Thanks, Greg!
Very well done, Mark! The peak foliage is breathtaking. Also loving the new tuning on that NYC 6!
Thank you very much, Joe! It sure sounded fantastic in the mountains!
Nice! Peak foliage, spectacular smoke and steam exhaust plumes in what must been damp, chilly air, and some unusal camera angles. I especially liked the going-away shot by the Cumberland station at 3:09...looks like regular service, with the old red brick station building and a mine run Mallet crawling past the canopied passenger platform. The broadside shot against the forested hillside immediately after is good too, with the exhaust trailing back and lingering over and beyond the entire train. This engineer's whistling style enhances the regular service vibe...tasteful, understated quilling of rulebook 14-L crossing signals trailing off into a moan, no extraneous tags or showy decorations tacked on.
Thank you for the very nice and thorough comment, Howie! Glad you enjoyed!
@@MPT_Productions You're most welcome! Not that thorough, though. I forgot to mention that it's also been major kicks to hear the New York Central whistle on this year's late summer and fall crop of 1309 vids. I don't think a lot of "Central" steam hardware was saved compared to some other roads, so such sounds are a rare treat. And didn't NYC and C&O share trackage in WV, and even shop facilities on their jointly owned Nicholas, Fayette & Greenbrier line, if I'm not stretching a point too thin?
@@howiesmith1504 you’re right on about the NYC. They are beautiful sounding whistles, and it’s a darn shame there aren’t more to be heard. Glad I got to hear this beauty.
My son really loves trains 🚆🛤🚋🚞🚝🚊🚉🚈🚇🚅🚄🚃🚂 especially steam locomotives 🚂 like that one he also hopes that the Western Maryland line from switch #9 to Connellsville PA is rebuilt and used again for both freight and passenger trains he says that it makes no sense why the Western Maryland line to Connellsville was abandoned in favor of the parallel Baltimore and Ohio line when the Western Maryland line had an easier gradient of just 1% over Sand Patch thinks the Western Maryland Connellsville subdivision would certainly make a difference in the world if it was rebuilt. But my son does not want that to be wishful thinking he wants it to be a reality.
What days did you go? The weather and color contrast are amazing!
Thank you, Brian! All of these shots were filmed on October 26th. The weather cleared up a little bit with each shot going up the mountain.
