Holy moly! Tajin! Goes great on almost all fruit…and then some. Very popular here in the southwestern United States (where a spanner is known as a crescent wrench!).
In interviews with those riding with Francis on a bike packing trip, the answer to the question "What is in your survival kit?" was universally, "don't have one, why do you think that we bring Francis? He packs everything!"
I prefer canvas tape because it's much stronger and it doesn't deform. I don't know the proper word in English - it's the same as electrical tape but with threats in it.
One tip for the spanner: get a Knipex 86 03 180... probably even a bit lighter I would guess than the spanner and more versatile since you can also clamp very nicely (straighten bent rotors, press in small bearings, hold stuff, hold and turn stuff, etc.)
Tip : if your cranks have hollow in it. You can stuff a lot of zipties on it. You can never know when you need a lot of zipties but it sure come in handy
i take a half / maybe 1/4 roll of duct tape. Remove the carboard to fold it into your wash bag. Tyre patches, bag repairs, tent pole patches... hellla good.
The roll-on sun lotion, you can save a few £ and get better protection with Tesco's Soleil range it has the highest UVA and UVB protection better than 99% of the branded alternatives including Nivea!
The episodes with all 3 guys reminded me Top Gear with Jeremy, Richard, James. Humor, different personalities, good editing, adventures in foreign country 👍
Haha I have the oppostite opinion of the patch kits. Never a problem with the self adhesive, never get a rubber cement one to hold air for more than a day. Plus the glue always dries up, then you're o the side of the road phoneing for help..
I always hope that the "essential bikepacking kit" videos will give me extra things I don't pack... Still waiting! I also substitute the fold out multi tool with a silca mini torque ratchet set. I then also have a pair of Lyzene quick link plyers that also has a chain breaker and extra quick links held magnetically to it. The leatherman is a great tool - I'm on my second. The adjustable wrench I take is smaller but has a similar range. Another think I take not on this list is a small pot of chamois cream - just incase delicate areas begin to call for help....
[Another thing I take not on this list is a small pot of chamois cream ] A small tube of hydrocortisone cream is even better. I get prescription strength (2%) though. Needless to say, it is prescribed. (If prescribed, get it with the anti biotic/fungal/yeast cream mixed)
@@extramediumyt3949you’re absolutely right, but if everything we ate HAD to fit into an old school food pyramid, I’d imagine that ketchup wouldn’t be a grain, fruit, meat, or milk. So it’d be a vegetable or a sugar. I’d personally label it a sugar, but I could see where a lobbyist could twist it into a vegetable.
I always carry a full patch kit and and the stick on patches. The stick on patches are fine if the tube is dry, sanded and the patch is held down for 2 minutes with your thumbs, this allows the glue time to cure. People forget glues don't fix in a second, the chemical reaction takes time.
Video suggestion: making a drillium nut rounder (adjustable spanner)! you could carry a spare crankset (600g ultegra) in the same weight as that spanner (622g on my scales) lamo
Small addition to your kit Francis... Purification tablets. Just pop one in any mysterious sourced water and you're golden. HOT and/or Looooong ride days they just save your bacon from risk.
FRANCIS you should try "Knipex pliers wrench" instead of adjustable spanner from this video. They come in different sizes and can be used as a press or pliers, not only as a spanner. They have smooth jaws without teeth. Very handy!
3:32 no way, Park Tool GP-2 Pre-Glued patch kit is the one! Use the little square of sandpaper in the kit, stretch out the tube slightly when applying the patch and it’s been 100% reliable for me. Last time I got a puncture I found a patch on the tube from around 2-3 years ago still holding on just fine.
Multi tools... very useful UNLESS the bits aren't long enough... I changed to a longer reach Park Tools one, and carry a small separate chain breaker and spoke key.
A Jaffa Cake is a cake and not a biscuit. McVitie's won a legal case in the 90s with the court ruling in their favour. VAT is applied to chocolate covered biscuits but not applied to chocolate covered cakes, so it was a big deal for McVitie's.
Interesting comment on pre-glued patches. After a string of them not sticking, I gave up. I was cast as a heretic for doing so! I don't mind doing the extra steps with real glue if the patch is going to last more than a few minutes. Problem is the quality of the glue has gone way downhill of late (I'm an old guy) In decades past, the glue had some ingredients that are now missing from most of the glues I've tried. And that includes Park! Some specific chemicals are prerequisites for the glue to work. And yes, I burnish the rubber, yada, yada, yada. I've been cycling for over half a century and done it on three continents.
Good to hear! I get plenty of veggies!🍕btw, tomato is a fruit. 😂 In over 50 years of riding, I’ve never needed or wished I had an adjustable wrench on the road. Now that I’ve said that I’ll probably need one on the next ride. Maybe to help someone to repair their car!😂
Thanks for the summary. A friend and I are riding back from Milan to Ghent in two months and are making lists of what to pack. We have most of the stuff but it's a nice check to see if we are missing anything. Are you relying completely on the tire boots/stickers to save you when your outer tire breaks or do you also carry an outer tire ?
Hi guys, Been enjoying your videos. I guess you're already in Singapore now when you read this. But just wondering whether you manage to set foot on the most sounthern point of the Asian continent, which is the southern tip of the state of Johor which is before Singapore. Don't let people tell you otherwise, other most south countries and territories in Asia are islands so they don't count
This would be absolutely outstanding! I think that Japanese culture, particularly out in the countryside would mesh very well with the Cade travel and filming style. A long trip spanning Honshu would be a heck of an adventure.
Hi, what do you use for editing videos when travelling, laptop or tablet, and what software do you use? Love the videos, just how good is bike packing through Asia? 👊🏼 we are finally going on a northern Vietnam tour this year, originally planned for 2020…… 🥺 we rode the Mae Hon Song loop in Thailand in 2017 and loved it, but those hills…… 😳
I'm surprised you not using "pro mechanic loved product" Fenwicks chain lube. I bought it after watching that video and its absolute shite, washes off after short wet commute
Hey guys what is your opinion on wich material your tyre leavers are made of? Personally i had some hard plastic ones (broken multiple times) and now I'm using metal ones ( risking to scratch and brake my rims).
Internet highlight of the year award. Lawrence's response when the adjustable comes out.

in Singapore and Malaysia there's only 2 types of weather, hot and hotter. Welcome to JB and hopefully see you on the road in Singapore.
by the way, whoever told you it is cooler the further you go south... what??
THis has been a great series. Showing us other wonderful people and lands. All it needs is a guitar shop outro.
Mr. Cade, please do a Iceland / Norway / Sweden bike packing adventure.
Thumbs up to see it the master of bike packing 😄✌️

Electrical tape is always a winner for me as well! Brilliant for quick bodges
I always have 30cm of Gaffa tape taped around my pump. So useful when on trips.

Kind tip for you: you can use wave jaws' rounded part instead of your spanner. It holds and turns nuts pretty well without skipping

Strapping tape I recommend, cannot be torn only cut. Spray plaster, for cuts and grazes.

The "super glue" in the patch kits will dry out over time. You can look for "rubber cement" which is the same thing.

They sell spanners with short handles, called "stubby". Easier to pack, saves a little bit of weight, still give you adequate torque.

I love the snippets in the end. So good. : )
Take a rest in the afternoon and wake up 4.30am to ride with lights
Fun fact: The colloquial German term for adjustable spanners literally translates to "Englishman".
I got a cheap Multitool with the levers left and right. I don't know why most bike Multitools don't have the most important tool on them.
