- I am back from a long landscape photography and trekking tour through the mountains of Nepal and in this video I share a bit of a teaser of what is to come. I also give my thoughts on the Fuji XT3 after 3 weeks on the trail. I do some initial testing with Lightroom vs Capture One and the results are quite surprising. Enjoy.

“A high ISO... ISO 640” Your perspective is something else, Tom.
Right?? Lol i was like Thomas 640 is high ? Not on a Canon 5dmk3or4
ahaha yeah, makes me laugh each time he says that. In wildlife photo, we're so often off the charts at 3200 or even 6400 ISO :D
@@ifindmetal - You lose dynamic range and gain noise very quickly going there.
@@FlyersNation98 - Wildlife is not all about tone range, it's about subject matter. A lion tearing into a gazelle can be noisy, shutter speed matters more than tone quality.
@@johnsmith1474 on a 5D no you don't i owned a Sony nex5r for years now that sensor was not ISO invariant his Fuji camera is and 640 is not high iso for that camera at all he would have the same noise if he shot it with different shutter or different f stop
Glad you're back safe and sound! I can't wait for the field videos of Nepal. It appears the trip was difficult yet rewarding. I have always enjoyed your content...please don't make us wait until Christmas!! Cheers!
"This isn't going to turn into a Fuji channel" … it's 2021 and 👀😅 I'm loving it honestly!
Now it’s an Nikon Channel ^^
Tom, I've been following your channel for years and always find it inspiring and educational. I was also a Canon shooter (5D Miii) for years but purchased the Fuji XT2 a few years ago for a climb up Kilimanjaro (5895 m/19,341 ft). The XT-2 with a 16mm f1.4 lens were my only gear along with a super light weight tripod. It did remarkably well and I've been shooting with Fuji ever since (XT-3 now).
I also have bounced back and forth between Adobe and Capture One. I was very familiar and comfortable with my Adobe work flow but can see a real difference in image quality with Capture One, especially when I push the ISO (1600+) or have to really pull up the shadows a lot. Foliage tends to do better in Capture One as well, at least in my hands.
Thanks again for the quality of the videos. I look forward to seeing more content about the Nepal trip in the weeks to come. Merry Christmas!
When I switched from my Canon 6D to Fuji it took me a while to break my Canon based LR editing habits and develop more for how Fuji RAW files work. I also found that it helps a lot to set the Fuji Provia/Standard profile in LR before doing any other editing.
Mate I know this is 2 years ago but I was wondering, I have a 6D with a 24-105 L lens that I used for many years now for travel photography and I'm satisfied with the results but the autofocus, not being able to use live view well, weight and age of it is starting to be a bummer. I've been looking to switch to Fuji XT3, how has your experience been with it?
@@AzamatoTheGreat I went with the XE3 and both a 23 and 50mm prime, loved it for travel in a bag that packed smaller than my Canon. I still use my Canon for some events but the Fuji is perfect for travel and with an XT I might have sold out of Canon completely.
Just use Iridient-X to convert the Fuji RAF files to DNG then process as normal in LR. No need to use C1. I had the same dilemma when I started using the Fuji system. This was the best approach as it still allowed me to use my LR workflow with only a small outlay for Iridient-X.
Glad you seem to have fully recovered Thomas. Looking forward to the coming videos from your trip!
Hello Thomas, again, thanks for sharing a piece of your life with us! I was watching your video in Portugal, with my wife and our gas heater, she knows how much I enjoy your videos and watch them as some people watch series on Netflix :), but on the night I was watching this particular video I just fell asleep, and my wife, to my surprise, continued to watch, the next day I had to replay the same video, she was so nice talking about your experiences and how bad you were feeling due to high altitude, she was also talking to about the workshop and the editing software...in short, I have given you one more fan :), I had the luck to own 3 Canon top of the range DSLR and 13 L series lenses, unfortunately, I only take pictures on your videos! And I simply love it too...thanks for everything, please keep on sharing.
Great experience Thomas! thank you for video! You can convert RAF files to TIFF in C1 Express (it is free) and finally edit its in Lightroom or Photoshop.
This will complicate the process a bit, but you will be able to use the tools you are familiar with.
Tom, cant begin to tell you how relieved I am to hear that the XT-3 worked for you. I simply adore my XT-2 and worried that you would hate it. Capture 1 is brilliant for Fuji files but sadly Adobe doesn’t seem to have the ability to bring Lr up to parity, like you I also have another system on the go, Nikon, alongside my Fuji kit. Time is fast approaching when a decision has to be made kit wise. Keep up the great content mate, always a joy to watch.
Also love the XT2 with couple of good landscape lenses. Also love my Nikon kit but both brands have their strengths so will probably stay with both. Fuji landscape colours amazing & nice lightweight kit.
Hi Thomas, I've been using Fujifilm ever since I started and it has taken a long time to get the hang of which of the many combinations of setting suit me best and get used to when and how to change what, to get the best out of them. As a result I have come to the conclusion that much as I might find a different system preferable the time taken to learn it's quirks somewhat puts me off. I am very glad to hear that you have managed to get good results so quickly!. The lens repair issues can be resolved by using the Fujfilm service and repair department at their UK headquarters down in Bedford, not far from where I live. I had a problem with my 100 to 400 telephoto lens, as before I rang them up, the normal way is they take your address and details and send you the packaging which you send back with the unit, after they get it they look at it and then 'phone or E-mail you with a price, usually a standard fee regardless of what is wrong, (my XT1 was wrecked!, rear screen smashed, EVF not working, bits missing all over the place, skin peeling off allover etc etc, cost £140. 00 all in!, all done in four days back with a complete new one year warranty!.) . The lens repair was £190.00. The highlight for me was the instant answer when I 'phoned the first time, the receptionist picked up after three rings, she put me through to Colin who picked up in two!!!!. You can find their "phone number on the Fujifilm website (Fujifilm UK). Cheers Richard.
Good to see you back safe and sound Thomas. Loved the preview of what's to come and an intriguing ending. Needless to say....subscribed 👍
Hi Tom -- for your landscape image, some of the gritty feel in LR may be because of over-sharpening. The enhance-details feature adds some sharpening, so you might need to turn down the standard LR sharpening (and/or lower the Detail slider to 10 or less) to match what's coming out of C1.
X-transformer!!! I have the X-T2 and using it on the low settings works great for the Fuji files. Converts them into Adobe RAW and is phenomenal!
Gear and software aside, I really love the sneak peak images. Excited to watch the chaos unfold in the coming videos!
Thank you! Great improv, a super spontaneous video. Looking forward to more!
You could get the Fuji version of C1. Much cheaper then the full version but you are limited to Fuji RAF files.
Love that monkey picture though, so cute.
Not much cheaper, free. It's free.
Janne Ranta only the express version which lacks quite a bit...
You just convert the raw to DNG like every photographer should be doing with their images generally. Monkeys are disgusting, two eyes staring are generically compelling be it a kitten or a burned out drunk in the gutter.
This
John Smith my raw data is what comes out of camera, there is no way I am going to convert it potentially losing metadata which may be used by future raw converters a few years down the line. There is nothing to win from DNG conversion.
i would love to see if you developed a more favorable impression of the 18 - 55.
Great video. Looking forward to the upcoming trip details. Glad you managed to safely deal with the altitude sickness
Very good you switched into fuji's world, I did the same and still doing from canon. I'm happy for the moment.
Come to Abruzzo and photograph our mountains, I would gladly drive you around.
Very nice shirt, Tom!
Nepal looked epic. Glad to see you came away unscathed after your AMS. I have always used lightroom for XT3 images and it is fine. The noise about worming is from pixel peepers and is all bollocks. Printed A2 and A1 images and they are amazing. Fuji will sort your lenses for you. They serviced mine for minimum cost. look forward to catching the xmas episode...
Here, here
You've clearly never opened a Fujifilm file (or any brands file) In Capture One.
How do you explain his better image quality results with C1 at 16:13?
@@alexven92 I don't see a difference at all, maybe it's UA-cam compression. But I've done my own comparisons as well with my X-Trans III files and C1 only looks better when sharpening comes into play. If I don't sharpen in LR (only in PS) it looks the same to me. Maybe it's just my eyes
@@alexven92 There's a really good article by Photoshop Guru Martin Evening about how Capture One initially looks better because it applies more sharpening etc than Lightroom does by 'default' and how you can tweak Lightroom default settings to match: insider.kelbyone.com/adobe-lightroom-and-capture-one-pro-close-up-by-martin-evening/
Hey Tom, about that C1 thing... I noticed that it depends on the images. When back from Iceland, I still edited mostly in LR. But for some, especially for color work and the clarity/luminance, I used C1 instead of LR/PS. It was indeed a better. Relying on the free trial was enough for now, at least. C1 is a superb piece of software, glad you liked it! And that image of the mountains... Awesome!
I switched to the Pro version of C1 from Lightroom and never moving back. Such a great tool.
And exactly this is why i love your channel.
Keep on doing what you do.
(and welcome to the fuji family)
Can't wait for the Nepal video on Christmas Day! First thing I am doing that morning is tuning in!! Great Video Thomas! Always gaining a greater perspective watching your videos!
You should process all the images in Capture One so you can get to know the software and give it a real chance against Lightroom.
Especially should he develop some of his 5D shots in C1 since there he already has a great feeling how the raw files behave, what you could do with it etc. Using a new camera with new lenses and a new software is not a good way to find differences in either.
I'm sure if Thomas would spend some time in C1 with his 5D images, he'd quickly consider switching even though it means there is a discomfort in rethinking one's workflows.
Fuji & CaptureOne are just amazing together, do yourself a favor and adopt CO for your Fuji files
BINGO!
Yep...agreed. Iridient Developer is great as well for Fuji raws. LR = meh or a lot of work to get "there". I shoot Sony and Fuji now...CO for raw conversion is a no-brainer. LR for library management makes sense to me.
@@devidasa9637 Are you aware of any youtube videos that shows this workflow? using CO and Lightroom?? Thanks...
Waiting for my new Fujifilm X-T3 delivery! My Christmas present to me. Really looking forward to your videos. Thank you.
I like your style of communicating with the viewer! You are really down to earth and accessible. I subscribed as a result.
You can download the iridientx plugin for Lightroom which is specifically for x-trans raw files
Try iridient x-transformer. You can simply convert your files before importing in LR. As sharp as Capture one (sometimes better in my experience)
Beautiful images Tom, looking forward to the Nepal videos, Merry Christmas Tom 👍
Thanks for the frankness on both the XT3 and Capture One. I'm in the same boat migrating from Nikon D810 and Lightroom to XT3 and Capture One. It's a tough decision switching system and workflow. I have not regretted the decision despite to challenges of learning a new system, software, and workflow. Keep up the great work as I will continue to tune in.
Nepal videos waited so much😀
C1 is my secret weapon. The only software I upgrade unquestioningly.
Can't wait to see / hear more from F4!
Hey Thomas, great video. I've run into the exact issue your seeing between Capture One and Lightroom with Fuji files.I have traditionally used the Canon 5d system with Lightroom but picked up a Fuji as a small secondary body earlier this year. I've gone back and forth with Lightroom and C1 but didn't want to complicate my workflow by changing to C1.
What I have found that makes a HUGE difference with Fuji files in Adobe is reducing the "Amount" slider for sharpening in Lightroom/Adobe Camera Raw to 0 (or at least greatly reduce it) . By default Lightroom/ACR sets the sharpening amount slider to 40. This is what causes the wormy artifacts and degrades the images quality when processing Fuji files in Lightroom. Fuji files do not need that much sharpening. My new workflow for Fuji is to do initial raw processing in Adobe Camera Raw and make sure the sharpening amount is 0. Then after I am done making my RAW edits in ACR I open the file in Photoshop and sharpen there (high-pass filter or sharpening adjustment, either works fine). Basically you want to avoid sharpening the RAW file before it has been processed by Lightroom/ACR. From there I export as a TIFF and the images look great. When I have done this the image quality has been on par with Capture One. I've also tested this method vs the "Enhanced Details" option in Adobe and found this will often produce a cleaner image than the Enhanced Details. I think "Enhanced Details" may actually be adding some of the "crunchiness" that you are seeing.
All this to say, the Fuji files definitely handle slightly different than the Canon files, but you can get great results in Lightroom/ACR. It will just take some time to figure out what works best for you and you may have to treat it a little different than a Canon file.
Best of luck!
Hay Thomas, in Capture One, look in the 'Lens' tab and make sure that the 'Diffraction Correction' option is checked, it can make an amazing difference to image sharpness. Recently bought an X-T30 for weight saving to work alongside my Canon EOS6D MkII and whilst it's been a bit of a learning curve, absolutely loving it, some great early results. Ive used C1P for years and would never go back to Adobe products - have fun!
You can get very similar results in LR within the sharpness dialog box. Radius .5, Detail 100, zoom in to 100% and increase amount until it starts to introduce artifacts, then back off a little. These settings sharpen using a different algorithm than the usual slider settings, one that is tuned to work against the effects of lens diffraction. C1's de-convolution sharpening algorithm partly references a lens profile, which in theory should perform better but I'm not sure how quantifiable the gains are. Would love to see a good side by side, not compressed in a UA-cam video.
I wanna see how the Fuji does in the dark.
Need more Northern lights - Astro videos!
A gear video I enjoyed? Nicely done Tom. I'm excited to see the rest of the trip. I'll confess I couldn't see the difference on my 720p 51" TV between the Lr and C1 images.
I am feeling excited to see your upcoming video.
As a matter of fact, I am from Nepal but never gone on a trek to the mountains.
So, I hope your upcoming video will give me some inspiration to travel those places.
I switched from LR to C1 about 2 years ago and I can highly recommend to invest the time to change your workflow. For me C1 absolutly outperforms LR - but when you make the step don't get stuck in different workflows for your Canon and your Fuji.
@Bobby Brady I think the overall image-quality is slightly better but mainly the possibilities of editing my files (in particular colors) are outperforming LR. Like beeing able to go deeper in my images and getting the maximum output.
Fuji UK themselves service their gear..... They have a price catalogue as well....
Glad to see you back safe and well
My situation is different to yours in that I'm an amateur photographer. I moved from Nikon film cameras to Nikon DSLRs to Olympus Micro Four Thirds with PRO lenses, and I'm loving the fine optics, weather sealing and portability. An EM-1Mk2 and 12-100 f4 (24-200 FF equivalent) would, I believe, have been ideal for your Nepal trip or, to be smaller and lighter, the 14-150 f4-5.6.
Regarding Capture One, bear in mind you can purchase it outright, unlike Lightroom. I bought it two years ago, so, at the price I paid, it has cost me less than £5.50 per month since then. Granted, I'm still on version 11, but it does everything I need (and it does it very well). The new version is £300 or £20/month, so after 15 months you're quids in.
Looking forward to seeing your Nepal videos!
I was resistant to going to Capture One too, I've used lightroom since it came out but got a Fuji X-T2 so gave the fuji capture one special a go. I never noticed worms in lightroom but, like you, just found the rendering so much nicer in capture one. C1 20 is really good too. As said below, grab the fuji special and give it a whirl. Once you get used to the way it processes it's damned powerful and you'll have the monkey image looking better than lightroom in no time!
Looking forward to seeing more images from your x-t3, you'll be onto the GFX by next Christmas!
Any issues with lens and sealing get onto Fuji UK support, they're really good.
You're in the dark side now! 👍🤜
Hi, does the photoshop a better job than Lightroom or it's the same thing? Wondering if Photoshop can be an alternative to C1...
@@k_meowington Photoshop is specialist image editing and lightroom/capture one are great for the majority of edits but also do workflow. You could certainly just edit your pictures in Photoshop and you'd be able to do a lot more advanced editing but you'd be missing out on managing your photography workflow easily.
I see them more of complementing each other, I'd primarily use either LR or C1 and then use Photoshop if I needed to go a bit deeper with any edits (less so these days).
Someone will mention use Iridiant developer with Lightroom. Oh wait...I did.
hahaha
Omar,are commenting all the Fujixt3 videos?😁
Hi Tom,
1. I'm glad you're back safe and sound. I knew someone years ago who suffered both amoebic dysentery and medium altitude sickness during a trip to Nepal - so I know how serious it can be.
2. Of course the Fuji X-T3 was satisfactory; it's as tough as old boots! Until last year, I'd used Nikon (F3, F5 and digital up to the D810) for almost 30 years. However, as I got older, my knees became less forgiving of strenuous work, so I swapped to Fuji (X-T3 and X-Pro2) and I haven't regretted it. The crop sensor isn't going to give you quite the resolution of a FF DSLR but it's pretty damned good.
3. Like yourself, I've used LR for years and it works fine for Nikon, Canon, etc. However, RAF files from my Fujis didn't seem quite right. Apparently, LR doesn't provide full support / profiles for Fuji bodies or lenses. I don't know why; they just don't. Anyway, a bit of research later and I downloaded the trial of C1 (v12). During the trial, they upgraded to v20 and the files look so much better - at least to my eyes. I've bought it. As I now own the licence, at least I won't be paying £10 to Adobe forever - once I've weaned myself off LR and fully onto C1. If you don't want the additional expense, you could always go for the FREE C1 Express for Fuji. It's not a trial, it's free. Probably not the full spec but should be good enough to make a call.
4. I've just got a GFX50r / 45mm f2.8 and my first impressions are that C1 (v20) makes those files look fantastic.
5. I just signed up to the F4 thingy. Interesting.......
Thomas, I follow you because you're an amazing person and photographer and I'm so happy to know that you will be visiting my country for a workshop!!! That is amazing!! Enjoy the wonders of my homeland :)
Wildlife photographer: Im shooting at very low ISO, 640!
Thomas: Gosh! I have to deal with this high ISO, 640!
🤣😂
True. Some wildlife photographers shoot from ISO 400 on.
@@dangernba Yeah, different kind of photography. Often at faster shutter speeds.
Wait...Do all cameras go below iso800? Or is 640 the "low" setting? lol
@@CanAvs16 Most have 100 as base ISO, some 200 or extend down to 50 or 64 or have two base ISOs, one being a little higher. 640 ISO as lowest is not something I ever heard of but who knows what's out there...
CanAvs16 and ironically he would have had slightly better performance if he had taken the shot at iso800 since the xt3 has dual gain and it kicks at iso 800!
Run some canon raw files through capture one?
Glad you’re better, altitude sickness is miserable.
Great video cant wait to see more of the trip, I'm using C1 for my Sony, so far so good,,,
Looking forward to your Nepal video's, did the same trek back in 2009 and it was amazing!!!
Reading through the comments I’m sensing tension from some Canon users 😂
It really doesn’t matter what camera we use.
If we have a good eye and a decent camera the end results will be great.
Relax.
Capture One is absolutely worth it. Get the Fujifilm version since those are the only type of files you need to process. It can be had in a subscription like Creative Cloud, or one-off purchase, which I prefer. I thought I was locked into a Lightroom workflow, and so I tried using Iridient X-Transformer (a step up, but not incredible) but after learning C1, it's far superior for me, not only with the end result but with the processing. The power of layers, the color controls, the luma mattes... it just does more, better.
Capture One also has a great UA-cam channel with some fast tutorials that get you up to speed, quick.
He runs a canon also
Great video. Good to see that you are warming up to the T3. Its a lovely camera. I switched years ago from Lightroom to ON1 and newer looked back. I switched to ON 1 when Lightroom changed from perpetual license to annual subscription. On1 is easy and intuitive, works well with Fuji raw files and the programmers actually listen to the users requests. One reason I like Fuji cameras is the feature to see the depth of field. No other camera has this feature.
I think this is spot-on. For people shots, or shots with not a lot of fine detail (especially green) and dynamic range, etc., LR can be OK using Enhance Details with X-Trans files. However, on most landscape type shots, Capture One does a much better job (especially if you pull the noise and colour noise reduction sliders right down and get the detail settings right). Another alternative is Iridient X-Transformer, which is good but sometimes it's not ideal to choose how much sharpening you want at the beginning of the editing process. The problem is, by the time you muck around with either of those LR solutions, they take up a load of extra processing time and disk space and you end up with duplicate file copies everywhere. In the end, it's actually easier and neater to properly learn Capture One and move across completely (which is quite easy nowadays) if you're a Fuji user. In any case, these have been my experiences.
Wow man I buried my head in the sand about the capture one as well for fuji, looks like I may need to give it a look..
Just convert to dng and use Adobe.
@@johnsmith1474 that doesn't fix any issues unfortunately -- adobe is still the one rendering the RAF into a DNG file.
@@dantsai - Ok thanks. The DNG is no different data wise than the RAF, it's just structured differently ie tiles. What is the issue exactly? If Lightroom does a process, Photoshop does too and better. The capture one is presenting a look that appears to be a tad sharper and more zippy, easily accomplished in Camera Raw & Photoshop. So ... I may not grasp the problem because to me it seems to be just an editing issue. I'm just suggesting that no Capture One is not required for best result. I'd have to see more about how it went down, perhaps.
@@johnsmith1474 The problem is that Adobe does a poor job with reading the data in the RAF files. This is true whether directly editing in LR, or converting to DNG. The workaround is to use a different RAW editor like Capture One, or to use a different RAF->DNG converter like X-Transformer. But either way, this requires using non-adobe tools to read the RAF files. Personally, I prefer a simpler workflow and don't want to learn new tools, so I live with the sub-optimal Lightroom output as it doesn't bother me that much.
@@dantsai - Yeah thanks, but I question the factual nature of that in real use. For instance what we see here is a Lightroom file that is so close to the Capture One it's pretty clear it can be edited to the same or better, and of course the monkey worked. But I can't see it in person etc. I'm not up to date on formats that cause issues in Adobe, and I do understand that the sensor on a Fuji is different. Thanks again.
Now we just have to get you over to DaVinci Resolve for video editing 😜
U just answered so many questions in my head ... great video
Looking forward to the Christmas video.. what a treat!! Merry Christmas!!
Actually, looking at your image of the Lightroom settings on the landscape, you didn't push any of the details at all. They are all flat.
I'm lucky that I prefer iridient for raw conversion of Fuji and Nikon files used as a plugin in Lightroom . The result is slightly better than C1 especially for landscapes where you want detail and are going to print big. I do also use C1 and have done for several years but more for tethering and like many paid out for the full version of C1 pro 12 less than 4 months ago only now to be told to upgrade to version 20 it's a further £159. So it's expensive when you have to factor in Photoshop as well. If c1 is all you need to use then fine and it's a fine program but it has it's limits but for many who respond in these forums you wouldn't think so
I was never a great fan of the Adobe raw conversion anyway irrespective of whether for my Fuji or Nikon files hence iridient x and n transformer but much of the ferver over C1 and it's capabilities is not accurate. Just a caution from someone who has used both programs over many years
Interesting to hear you prefer Iridient. I've touched the surface but can't see any noticeable difference from standard LR. Not sure I have the best settings. Would you share yours please?
C1 seem to do awesome job for studio and landscape shoots and X Transformer seem to do best for everything else like outdoor portraits, etc
@@johnnykempo Hi John For both my Nikon and Fuji raw files In Raw options and DNG Options everything is more or less set to defaults values except the RAW Process which is set to 'More Detailed' selected from the pull down list. I always make sure that the boxes for Turn off Lightroom/Acr Sharpening & Luminance NR & ACR Colour NR are all ticked in both Raw and DNG options. Having set that though I have also set Lightroom import sharpen and noise reduction to Zero defaults as I was never happy with the default import settings anyway. I can match the quality of capture one pro 12 using these settings and have compared images from both Iridient and Capture One and just now, I find that Iridient is very slightly better at basic raw processing. I find that my larger prints are better although I have not yet compared them to the newer Capture One Pro 20. Finally, my images are edited for final print in Photoshop which includes Sharpen. Unfortunately Capture One cannot replace photoshop in that respect. This is what suits me best just now and is my workflow. Hope that helps?
Really liking your style of videos these days ,good work looking forward to your Nepal series 😊👍
Looking forward to watch the rest Mr. Thomas!!
I love it when photographers wake up to alternatives to Adobe and Apple. Yes, it's ok to have independent thought and try something different.
That‘s true, but honestly Windows is a bad OS, especially technically. It doesn‘t matter much for photographers since they‘re mostly just using some software on top of it, but when you work with the system a little more, Windows is horrible. Most UA-cam tech nerds and creative persons only really see Windows and Mac and don‘t even know about Linux, which is the superior system for a whole lot of use cases. MacOS is also often the choice for developers and the like. MacOS is a Unix-based OS and Linux is a Unix-like OS, so they‘re technically very similar, very capable, both use the VERY powerful Unix shell (command line) with a lot of important tools, which most developers use day in, day out. Windows has it‘s own, horrible „cmd“.
It‘s so bad, Microsoft themselves have woken up and now officially offer a Unix Shell virtualisation in Windows. Something that is the very base of Linux and MacOS.
My point is, sure, it‘s good to wake up to alternatives, but in terms of computers, Windows isn‘t as good as people might think. Windows actually has a lot of problems and issues and Microsoft sometimes doesn‘t manage to fix stuff within months, it‘s quite bad.
Wow, you’re so woke dude
@@Fabio-rg9nv please don't project your personal opinion unto other people. What os is used highly depends on personal preferences and specific software people choose.

Thumbs up if you agree!
awesome. excited to watch this and next weeks video
As a former canon lover and LR lover. And for a year now fuji lover and capture one lover, I've become your big fan. I went through all this and I do not regret the changes. Go ahead!
This is why I like Olympus gear. It’s amazingly well weather sealed and rugged. Can shoot in a full down pour with the EM1X and not have to worry.
When you learnt to use C1 the monkey will look 200% better in C1 than in LR.
I used to struggle a lot with Capture One - hated it, it was difficult, clumsy, the UI is unattractive and I uninstalled it 2-3 times. And I slowly discovered the masks, the colour grading and no way to go back to LR. Never. Hell no.
This. I think the way Thomas is editing images would actually benefit from the more flexible layers and color tools of C1.
One important thing missing though is a stitching feature which is great in LR. There are external tools for this job but I get if that is a deal breaker for some photogs...
The real power of C1 definitely is the masks. I add a mask for each setting, so a mask for contrast, a mask for highlights, a mask for shadows etc, then paint away! It has made photo editing so much more fun. And the results are amazing!
The only feature I miss from LR is the heal tool. The heal tool in C1 is just plain stupid! Try healing 100 spots, and you will hate it too in C1! 😄
Where/how did you learn to use C1? The manual? Online videos? Books?
@@da009999 C1 has a UA-cam channel with extensive tutorials on the software.
@@thestevewood My workflow according to this issue: make a strong, shadow-highlight, colour balanced 16 bit PSD -> export to Photoshop -> heal, clone, dodge and burn -> send it back as a TIFF to C1, colours, noise, b/w, resize, sharpen, export to social media, archive, print.
Excited to see Nepal vids as well as the f4 news
Like your description of Nepal conditions. I was there few years ago and yes, it is life-changing and tough experience...
Here is the secret. In Lightroom put sharpening to zero and open the file in Photoshop without doing anything else. Then sharpen (agressively) the image with unsharp mask. Send the file back to Lightroom and you will find that you can apply further editing without degrading the image. I don't know how but it works. However I had to leave Fuji behind since the workflow meant that I had to spend a lot of time without pay. Switching to Capture One was never an option since that would mean giving away even more free time.
It could just be me and I used to hate switching as well but I switched from Canon to Fuji and im really happy with it, of course I had to leave behind years of catalogs that I had on lightroom with my Canon but i'm loving my fuji xh2 it takes some time getting used to it but the switch from lightroom to capture one wasnt so hard for me, I really love the colors and quality of the images you get when editing. I dont use the film simulations and created my own little recipe to get the most natural colors in camera and it works fine for me, I still have both my Canons just in case though.
I was using On1 and Affinity when I ditched Lightroom. Until I tried Capture One Pro (Sony)... it is easily the most gentle, subtle, special way to process Raw images in my humble opinion. I LOVE what it does for my images!
Daniel O'Donoghue That’s where I’m at. Might have to give it a look. Thanks.
I have had a similar experience with Capture one. Using it for 2 years now and it's just excellent, just got Affinity photo to replace PS.
Oh yes, Ama Dablam is definitely more interesting than Everest! I made my hardest sunrise timelapse ever from Chukung Ri facing Ama Dablam. Hiked up from 4700m to about 5300m at 2am and the timelapse turned out to be one of my best. Can´t wait for your Nepal video!
Absolutely perfect video. I'm excited to follow your future videos and how you extract quality landscape images using the xt3 and C1. Like you I plan to keep my 5D4 and LR/PS. But I'm now also including the xt3 for my own lighter pack outings. No regrets to date and enjoying how fun the xt3 is to use. Like my Canons, I've used it in driving rains, with weather sealed lenses, without incident. Please keep showing the Canon and Lightroom videos but it will be great to alsoi see your Capture One posts as well.
The capture one version of both images looks more natural to me
Second that. Also, C1 is the much better tool of choice for color adjustments even though LR seems to be eye-pleasing with it's initial but limiting output.
Did the switch to C1 once Adobe chose to lose me as a customer by switching to subscription model. I'm so happy they did, never regretted the switch.
LR looked fine to me.
@@copperx agree completely, I did the same, no regrets. It even processes my 4x5 scans better than LR
I dropped LR years ago when I was still shooting nikon. There is a learning curve to C1, but imho the colour science in C1 is way ahead, for landscape this should be the most important thing. Btw there is a free Fuji version of C1.
Didn’t know about that. I bought a X-T3 a few months ago and never thought of C1, because Im also used to LR, but this sounds like a great must try to me, thanks for the tip🙏
I am a little bit bias because i work at CaptureOne in Copenhagen. An i couldn't agree more with the raw conversion is better in CaptureOne. To my defence i have used CaptureOne since Apple Aperture stop developing. That was around CaptureOne version 7 or 8. Long before I started at CaptureOne. You just need to get the right introduction to CaptureOne - then you will se the power of the program and workflow. I will say in 90-95% you don't need to roundtrip to PS for editing your images. And you problely don't even need PS, you can use Affinity for that. And then save some money on your subscription with Adobe.
@@JakobEvers I seriously looked into Capture One. I even contacted customer service. As of now, Capture One can not import multiple images as layers. It can't do HDR nor stitching panos which would be important for landscape photographers. Customer service told me I would have to get plug ins to make that happen. One has to have a focus stacking plug in just to do focus stacking. I do pet photography mainly. I do some landscape just for fun. I backed away from Capture One as I want the ability in my pet photography to import multiple images as layers. I want that flexibility in order to have a variety of ways to edit out unwanted objects like leashes. Last time I contacted Capture One they mentioned they would be working on those features. I hope so. In the mean time I decided to get ON1 as it will allow me to import multiple images as layers. From some of the images I've seen from C1 I think they have the edge on color etc. No doubt they are the best tethering software but for what I do I need to be able to import multiple images as layers. I hope they add that feature soon. Since you work for them maybe you can let them know. Thanks!
@@pattymattes7124 Hi... Its really all about how your workflow is. And remember was it is - a RAW converter for developing your RAW images. Not for editing your images this is why you have programs like Affinity Photo. If you can see the difference between those two things. CaptureOne is like your digital darkroom - so what you do in a darkroom you do in CaptureOne.
My workflow i like this - i develop my RAW files as much as i can in CaptureOne, and if i need image editing i will go to Affinity Photo. I do the same with every RAW convert that i have. Fx. Phocus for Hasselblad. This was also why i wrote that 90-95% of your images don't need round-tripping for image editing there are done in CaptureOne. And if you need roundtrip for image editing you save your layered files in TIFF, the you will be able to work with that again in CaptureOne, not on each layer but like you did with your RAW files. (Remember 16bit TIFF)
I found C1 to be incredibly difficult to use. The interface and controls are maddening. Clicking in and out of different menus to access different tools, the shadows/highlights sliders only work one way. Every time I use it I get annoyed and close it in a huff. I want to like it because like you said, it has the best color science and sharpness for Fuji files but I just can't seem to get the hang of it and it seems I'm the only one. No one else I talk to sees any shortcomings with the software. It must be something I'm doing wrong
Thomas, give it a good thought. For me I never used LR, so it was easy to jump into C1 for my X-T3. You could use them both, but you have to decide. Love the new C1 20 upgrade. I had one image in Norway where I bumped my speed dial (the locks could be firmer) shooting at 1/8000 ISO1600, but the new C1 version removed all the noise and it was very useable.
Here till the end mate. .. can't wait
"The Monkey and Mountains" a story from Thomas Heaton hahaha 📖
Thomas, I just love your vlogs, and do yourself a favour and switch to Capture One, it is just that much more professional. I still have my Adobe subscription, but I never use it anymore, I was hanging on to Photoshop for stacking, but there are good alternatives to that. And with Capture One 20, it just got that little bit better -there is just so much more control with C1 and when you get used to it, Lightroom just seems so amateurish (I'm not sponsored by C1 by the way). C1 took my photo quality to a new level.
I still love what you are doing! Cant weit for more!
Thanks for the video mate. Looking forward to the Nepal videos 👍
The XF55-200 is known for being a dust sucker.
My XF18-55 is also filled with dust which is visible above f5.6 or in certain lighting conditions. The images are unusable until I can find someone trained to clean it. I’ve been zooming my XF55-200 sloowly to avoid the same problem. ;-)
I have high hopes with my recent purchase of the XF16-80 sealed lens.
@@illustratedWORD I can second that, I despise external zooms for this very reason. My 18-55 is a dust vacuum even in fairly low-dust parts of Europe. I can't imagine ever using that lens somewhere around India, the Australian outback or southern California..
Fujifilm service in Bedford is very quick and reasonable priced
Why not get some more people in and call it f11? 😂
Or 60 more and call it F...... oh wait that sounds familiar :-)
I switched to C1 about a year ago because I loved how much better my raw files looked out of camera. Better starting point, less processing for me. Good luck making a decision. :)
@Bobby Brady Then why do I agree with Ellen Brooks with my images shot at iso100?? Noise is not an issue with iso100!!
Hope you loved Nepal. Cant wait for your videos. Lot of love from Nepal. :) :)
Can't travel because of political turmoil. Those were the days.
send it to fuji for a service. Their repair and cleaning services are amongst the best.
They just use local shops.
@@johnsmith1474 Incorrect. The Fujifilm centre in Bedford does its own repairs and maintenance.
That's what I did and the Fuji center was great
@@findingouradventure_ Yeah they're super good.
I'm really looking forward to your videos. It sounds like you experienced some misfortunes and that's my favorite thing about your channel. The same things can happen to any of us if we were to go to Nepal but you're one of the few UA-camrs who is willing to show them on their channel and that you're still able to get great images from those trips regardless.
I will be looking forward to watching the next video. I faced the same interrogation between LR en C1... Sticked to C1 and am so happy about it. I still miss some fonctions from LR so sometimes I process in C1 and adjust some details in LR. Anyway thanks for the videos.
"Los 4 Amigos" .... ;-)
After the Canadian Rockies I have been waiting for Season 2.
I'd say 4 Musketeers :D
Well, F4... is Fantastic Four ;)
try to process Canon raw files with C1 ;)
YES!! F4 can’t wait
Thanks for your videos. I used to shoot MF on an RZ67 20 years ago. Had a home darkroom etc. Sold it when I had kids. Just bought an XT3 in part because of your videos. It has been great. And I am an ocean dwelling flatlander as well so don't beat yourself up over altitude issues.
Lightroom or Capture One? It is so simple. Canon 5D mkIV :)
Hey Tom, there is another software called "Iridient X-Transformer" by Iridient Digital (highly regarded by the Fuji shooter community) which takes your Fuji RAF files and converts them to DNG using their own recipe. It's just a drag and drop to convert a batch of files, which you can then import into LR for similar, if not better results than you saw in Capture One. You can try their software for free, and if you like it, it's only $36. Here's a side-by-side at 1:1 from LR: imgur.com/a/aemucQK.
I shoot Sony, but picked up a Fuji X-Pro3 recently for personal work, and noticed a SIGNIFICANT difference between the "Enhanced" files and DNGs processed by Iridient.
Waste of time, either use Capture One or switch camera brands. You can't ignore post production software that is being developed with the camera brand itself.
@@undercoverbearmusic There's no need to throw the baby out with the bath water, though. I've also been using Lightroom for several years and simply do not have the time to invest in re-learning everything in Capture One (even with the sea of resources available on UA-cam). That shouldn't "disqualify" someone from the benefits that Fuji's X system may offer them. The end goal is to produce the highest quality content and images possible with the gear at hand (and at home), and Iridient's X-Transformer seems to fill that gap for me, allowing me more time to shoot/edit rather than learn Capture One.
Luis Garbinski Indeed, this is also a great alternative. There is also a plug-in for Lightroom ...
This. Just use the Iridient plugin and you can go back to using LR.
Work flow should be streamlined adding steps increases time to end result, for professionals time is money hence C1 makes more sense.
nobody, nobody on YT does background music better than you Thomas!! love your videos & photographs as well (obviously) ... have also signed up for the website 😊👍🏽
Very much like this new 1 video per week format!! Congrats
