It’s truly fascinating to watch Guy experiment with so many different types of material. I very much respect his process. Love his reaction to a successful mix!
Once again, thank you for being the guinea pig on the lime plastering. We have the same book about lime and it is wonderful to see how it translates into a finished surface from someone who has never done it before. It gives us hope that we will be able to do the same. Since we are rebuilding a huge mansion, we will be using the steel trowel method to get a nice polish.
I like how you are very methodical with your experiments and keep pushing for a result. I think perfection is whatever you aim to achive achived. So a rustic texture is also a perfect finish if it is what you aim to achieve :) Well done, Guy!!
Trying to find the right superlative but it’s taken by almost everyone in comments. I find it extremely satisfying watching you find your mojo with plastering. Well done you guys!
Nice job. You are probably 2+ years ahead of us on your project. By the time we get to the lime plastering stage, everything will have grown back and you may be hankering to do some more to 'keep your hand in'. Consider this an invitation 😉 Galicia is not that far away...
Now I can say that you are practically living in paradise. Watching your video, it adds a little bit of optimism to me. I remembered how I bought a plot of land, built a big house, installed solar panels, dug a well, and became almost independent from the government system. Then the war came and fear for my children never leaves me for a moment. Perhaps, if possible, we will have to leave far away and start everything from scratch. In a good way, I envy you. How great it is that you can freely travel around the world.
@@carole4119 Thank you very much. I am trying to find a way out. I have enough strength to do something good, but in our time, money is still needed. I think I will find options - there is nowhere else to go.
One wall at a time, otherwise it can be overwhelming. I think you did a fantastic job and it's wonderful to watch someone take that much time and effort to craft something.
such a satisfying material to work with, lime putty and mortar is. The shine in your eyes when you realized you got a good-feeling mixture is VERY relatable :) thanks for the video!
The scope of work ahead of you is mind boggling to me! But every experiment and success in that one little room will help to ease the work and time in the others. The sore muscles are a different story, lol! Great work Guy. Happy for you guys and your under floor heating project to begin!
How exciting to becoming close to finished with the construction of an entire room. Just having the laundry room set up will be wonderful. I like that you will be using either a clay or lime wash finish. Congratulations on getting to this point and now having the parts available to complete the underfloor heating. Next winter will be far more comfortable for you two.
After all your gained knowledge and experience with lime plastering you could probably become a professional for hire! Great work you both. Can’t wait to see the end product.
Nice work. Definitely a learning process. Decades back when I was patching plaster walls and ceilings here in the US I learned it takes a while to learn your “touch” with a trowel. Plaster is a multi layer process. The deeper layers just get sloped on and smoother as you work out to finish coat with fine finish plaster. Like you did. The undulating walls were especially noticeable in the corners. To better smooth out undulating walls use a longer trowel. Something like an old 4 or 6 foot level or a very straight aluminum angle iron to drag out a straight base coat. Maybe glue a cheap level eye to it. You should be able to buy an inside and an outside corner trowel to easier make sharp corners.
You've definitely got a talent for plastering Guy as I've said before. Very well done - (Kylie could be a little bit more free with the praise!) One method you might like to try is instead of spraying with water on the last stainless steel trowel before you trowel it is you could try a wide brush in your left hand that is soaked with water and you 'flick' it as you trowel - sort of quicker than a spray and you'll get into a rhythm.
Sitting here at twilight's last gleaming sipping a hot cup of black coffee and watching you perform wall duty from my laptop. Out on the deck, big dog at my feet. It's February so it is shorts and long sleeve t-shirt weather this morning on the Gulf Coast of Texas. This is a pretty good way to start Saturday mornings. I think that wall experiment is a success. Keep rocking!
Oh the walls have turned out so beautifully, Guy. I loved seeing how pleased you were when it WORKED!! It was uplifting to see you happy...and I think you deserved a premature celebration. It appeared to be nice to the touch and Kylie did approve of the 2 top coat wall. Success!
😊 amazing work done, just in awe of all your work, the work ethic. It’s a joy to get to watch you work and share a part of your life and this most amazing adventure
Bravo Guy!! Well done! 👏 Not to take away from what you accomplished in this episode which is massisve but I am really looking forward to next week's edition. UFH!
Hi Guy, love that lightbulb moment when things actually work like the experts say they will 😀 Here in NYC plasters experts use a narrow long plaster trowel - 5” wide ,24 to 36” long - with very rounded corners. More material goes on faster and fewer lines in the plaster. I’ve hacked my regular trowel by rounding the corners with a right angle grinder. Also buy a metal corner trowel , save some time. I’ll try to email you a photo - Eric.
Me and the missus were talking so loudly when Guy was doing the final smooth finish on the second wall, like "use more water" or "needs a second coat" etc... That we were so pleased when Guy did use more water, and Kylie said it needs a second coat! It's almost interactive watching your videos, definitely entertaining that's for sure!
Great videos! And I admire you and your partner doing all this work. I work with Lime Mortars. One tip, if right handed start right to left especially on first, second coats. You want to work the mortar into itself rather than away. Keep up the good work!
Woah, buddy. You can tell on camera what a difference this coat made! I was so impressed, I ordered the book. We lime-washed the exterior brick on our home last summer, and I'd love to have some reason to do some inside walls... Maybe I'll build something with the excuse of needing to lime plaster it. LOL
WONDERFUL YOU CAN see the different directly, and it is much easier to do and quicker. I only can repeat it again. Great Project, Great Job, Great Team. Wish all the BEST.
great job, if i could say a quick note, its important to spray water on the plaster at least three days in order to keep the cement reacting which will make it harder and stick better on the walls.
Awesome job on the walls. Looks like a difficult thing to get right the first time and, like you said, by the time you have completely mastered it through hours of work you wont be using that skill again. It must be a proud moment to get things like this done on your own rather than pay someone to do it. Congrats.
Well done Guy, I know how hard rendering and plastering is as a DIY,er. But I’ve never had the size of project ahead of me that you do, amazed at how sober you looked considering. My wife and I have followed you both since the early days and are alway well impressed with your productions, hard work and the educational values. Thank you both.
Just had another ridiculous quote come through and finding your youtube has inspired us to give it a go ourselves in our very old property in Gloucester. Thank you!
I just wanted to say THANK YOU for sharing your lives with us and working so hard to get us a video to watch for our enjoyment I've been watch you channel since the beginning of your old channel and just wow and you work a normal job too....Just thank uou
Although a 'how to' plastering video wouldn't normally be my Saturday night go to, you both manage to make it compulsive viewing 😂 really great to see it coming together, think it's such a good look on the walls and looks just right for the farmhouse. Good luck with the rest!!
It is so cool to see your "experiments" suceed! And...Yes...You will be an expert when you are done, but in the meantime you will become better and better. It is the way of life. Construction people get good at what they do, so it's a rinse and repeat. It's the creativity and efficiency in each new project that keeps them going. You never know what the future brings. You are developing a craft that you could teach others. Also, how many projects are available in your area...since no one knows what you do. Maybe one day you will travel to teach and do your unique knowledge skill!
Finally a video showing the mix of hydrated lime!!! It was so frustrating trying to find a recipe when all of them only say "slaked lime" or "lime putty".
Great job Guy. I know it’s the start of a marathon not a sprint but your ‘training’ in the laundry room has been successful and must be a big relief after the ups and downs (literally) up to now. Delighted for you and good luck to you both on the underfloor heating project. I’ll be looking on the latter keenly as although I hope to build a house this year ( modern and with builders employed) but underfloor heating is deffo on the cards, as is solar (which unlike you will only give me a little off grid power as I’m in Ireland).
It looks really good on TV and don't forget that you're gonna also have a coat of whitewash paint on top of it too which will fill in a lot of small imperfections
G'day from downunder Kylie and Guy, Don't you love it when something works out better than you thought it would. Hey Guy, love the comment at the end about by the time you finish you'll be proficient and then never do it again. Keep up the good work 👍
Well Done! Admire your patience and hardworking..and positive attitude... Yes, tedious job but finally great satisfaction for both of you... Wonderful. Rest well and take care. Fantastic job... Pays off... God bless
I've seen a trowel that is best described as L-shaoed, specifically for doing corners, on another UA-cam channel. They were pleased at how much easier it made the job. You're doing to do so much plastering that getting that trowel would be a huge help..
@Darren Thyer I disagree. It will work well for the kind of plastering he's doing today & they have so much of it to do that anything helpful would be welcome. He DID complain about it after all.
Hi. Another couple restoring an older stone house has reached the stage that they are lime plastering ateliermavi is their Channel name and a good episode to watch is #37. Thank you for sharing your lives and build. Jim.
For the second smooth coat could you add a very small amount of dye to see where you have been and where you have not. So pleased something went right first time. Great job.
Love the result , great video , had to smile that when it’s all finished you’re going to be pretty good at it , but never do it again , 😂, well done from me but more importantly the boss was happy with it too, 🎉Graham
Well, you will be doing it again on your next house, in five to ten years :) Nice work. Cool to see you get excited at getting the mix more or less to where you want it.
It’s truly fascinating to watch Guy experiment with so many different types of material. I very much respect his process. Love his reaction to a successful mix!
Before we know these areas will come together so quickly, all the groundwork has been done. So impressive 👏
Once again, thank you for being the guinea pig on the lime plastering. You sure conquered the plastering learning curve. Well done Guy, lovely job 👋
Trying to find the right superlative but it’s taken by almost everyone in comments. I find it extremely satisfying watching you find your mojo with plastering. Well done you guys!
Luscious finish, and to know that it’s natural, breathable, even better. Congratulations 🎉
Nice job. You are probably 2+ years ahead of us on your project. By the time we get to the lime plastering stage, everything will have grown back and you may be hankering to do some more to 'keep your hand in'. Consider this an invitation 😉 Galicia is not that far away...
Well done, your persistence payed off. I was relieved when Kylie gave it the OKAY.
Fantastic rendering, well done Guy! You should be proud of yourself! 😉😉🍺🍺

Plastering in itself is a tricky trade to learn and working with lime is completely different so you done excellent 👌 well done keep enjoying it 👍
One wall at a time, otherwise it can be overwhelming. I think you did a fantastic job and it's wonderful to watch someone take that much time and effort to craft something.
You guys are truly amazing to watch. I love all the thoughts that go into everything! Looks great!
So proud of you both!!!🎉 enjoy following you. 73 year old granny in NC
such a satisfying material to work with, lime putty and mortar is. The shine in your eyes when you realized you got a good-feeling mixture is VERY relatable :) thanks for the video!
I agreed with Kylie! Great job Guy!😚
It is so nice to see you doing something that is not exhausting AND is so successful.
The scope of work ahead of you is mind boggling to me! But every experiment and success in that one little room will help to ease the work and time in the others. The sore muscles are a different story, lol! Great work Guy. Happy for you guys and your under floor heating project to begin!
I loved the excitement Guy had when discovering he had the right texture for his mix. It turned out very nicely Guy, well done.
It’s like watching mad science. I’m glad you got the right proportions. Looked like icing a cake.
The rustic finish is beautiful and fits perfectly with the farm house. Can't wait to see you moved in and enjoying all your hard work.

That second wall was bloody near on perfect considering you’ve not done it before😊🇦🇺
Woo-hoo...the underfloor heating stuff!!! The walls look great and we love the rustic look, too. Looking awesome, guys! 😊

Some beautiful work there 🤓👍 really enjoyed watching your process and explainations.
For the second smooth coat could you add a very small amount of dye to see where you have been and where you have not. So pleased something went right first time. Great job.
Yeah, I agree. Food dye? In first top coat?
A nice plus to a smooth polished surface-easier to dust, wipe, paint.
Love the process. Not to the part yet where Kylie inspects it though.
This was quite informative. Thank you for soldiering on sorting out the process.

Brilliant work Guy. Thank you for making our life so much easier ;)
This mixture looks very good and it looks like it goes on easily 😅😊
Wall is looking good!
Boy, that was a lot of work! Beautiful work, Guy!
Well, you will be doing it again on your next house, in five to ten years :)
Nice work. Cool to see you get excited at getting the mix more or less to where you want it.
