Cool! I did work on this film at the time. The CGA were created at my company by Dan Altmann, a wizzard in 3D CGA. I did system management and programming stuff for this production.
AbamboPictures Good work you did back then, this brings back so many memories... Don't suppose you know the name of the background track that starts at 0:35 do you.. been after it for so long.. :)
And perhaps you could help me with a reference to the background track quite at the end where Astra's presence at exhibitions and fairs is being shown. Please what is the name of that pizzicato track behind? Thank you.
I liked those CGA of the satellites in 1994, when the video ran on an endless tape on Astra. And I still love them today. They came really close to the real satellites with respect to their design, but not in their respective size to each other. Great work, nevertheless!!! What was the name of your company back in those years?
Dear Petr, thank you so much for uploading this video. I grew up with this on the satellite, I watched it countless times. I remember everything!! Makes me very nostalgic to see it again now. Thank you so much!!!!!!!!
I remember seeing this in 96' when I was visiting in Germany from U.S. that summer with my family. I asked what the dishes I kept on seeing outside homes were for. Then my cousin pulled up this demo channel, and tuned in the English audio portion. I was fascinated by it. Then realizing this was how the DirecTV DBS (then called DSS) system worked in America. (they should have had a demo like this to explain how it worked) Though DirecTV launched with digital service from the start in 94', and everything was encrypted, versus Astra having clear view on some channels with others encrypted. I liked the fact that most of the national networks were in the clear for everyone to see. I'm amazed they kept the analog service up through 2012. Until last year (2014), you might have been able to count all the analog services in north America on one hand, and those were mostly hold out religious broadcasters and shop at home networks. I would have loved to have been given a tour of the Astra facilities in Luxembourg that summer. Amazing looking grounds with the old and new next to each other.
I have a copy of this promo on DVD somewhere which is exactly the same as this but mentions that there were 6 satellites in orbit and Astra 1F was launched from the Cosmodrome in Baikonur, I first saw this in 1997 so i guess that version was updated in late 1996 and broadcasted on Astra 1D
Very nostalgic for me too, i used to view this channel over and over again back in the nineties in Daumazan France while eating everal bowls of milk and Smacks :)
I remember when I got the first satellite dish way back in 1996. I was 10 years old and I was watching this channel over and over again and always wondering why I can't watch MTV.... They started broadcasting it at the beginning of 1999. It was MTV Germany, but for me good enough. Later that year Cartoon Network /TNT was shut down...fuck...I was so mad
The background sound when the space craft is launched? That is composed by Sergej Prokofiev in Romeo And Juliet No13 Dance of the Knights. By the way at the time I wrote this comment there existed a pop cover by Robbie Williams Party like a Russian.
The music brings a happy little nostalgic tear to my eye, but I don't know if anyone outside SES Astra will ever know what it actually is :). EDIT: I tried to hit it up on Shazam. I tried 3 times. No result :(.

Me too haha, I have never heard the music at 3:26 since '96 when I was 5 years old but I still know every tone of it 😄

Does anyone know the musical piece used when the satellite rotates around the earth?
I've watched this demo at home in Poland when i was 12 in 1996 all the time. Whats the music in 3:30?
It's the same piece as in the following clip starting at 00:50. I don't know its origin.

Serious music! Serious business @ 1 minute! Saying that, the Roland LA synth sounds from the 80's were a bit old by 1996!
jako malej kluk sem na to vydržel koukat hodiny :-D věděl sem že to jednou zase najdu
tiež som sa na to nevedel vynadívať, k tomu ešte ta hudba :)
Haha me too me and my brother would watch it all night lol
Can anybody tell me what the classical music that starts at 4 min 35 is called please?
Охренеть!!! Реклама из моего детства!!! Сколько воспоминаний возникло... Кстати, тарелка так и висит, но уже без дела. Снимать принципиально не хочу.
