    number 1 rule of doing a cam shaft on an LS is dont look at the cam bearings. are they there? yes then they are fine. full send

    Guys while it's still apart replace the cam retaining plate. That's an important seal embedded in it for the oiling circuit. Also I'd go a single row chain. Don't stress about bearings or rings. Bolt it back together and send it. Have fun.

    Trick is to undo the balancer in the car first, breaker bar on chassis rail, pull fuel pump fuse then crank the engine, works every time 👌
    If you've got a decent rattle gun though then it's no problem.

    Love it guys, good to see you finally working on a real engine ;)
    Some tips if you are interested...
    1) Love the roof winch. I did much the same in my shed, but take note from my previous failures... when this fails, it'll be the straps getting sliced by the razor sharp edge of the block. When this happened to me, the engine did a summersault from about head-height and barely missed my foot on landing. Little bit of cardboard on those edges might prevent some tears.
    2) When doing double-row timing chain, you will likely need to step the pump forward and clearance the timing cover.
    3) The position of the chain on the gears doesn't really matter, but the relationship between the gears does. Dot-to-dot is good enough.
    4) I'm pretty sketchy with my shit and rarely change oil pumps and timing chains, but one thing I do recommend is that cam retaining plate is replaced. It has a seal behind it that holds oil pressure, and are almost always flat. LS engines are not priority oiled, and loss of oil pressure here prevents oil pressure reaching the crank.
    Can't wait to see this on the road sometime, or even better, line up against it at Heathcote one day :)

  • @FuManchu5ltr
    @FuManchu5ltr 2 роки тому +2

    Aeroflow pickup bracket to really ensure oil pressure is solid. Costs like $30.
    New cam retainer plate with a fresh seal. Old ones can be compressed and you’ll chase oil pressure problems. Again, $30-$60. One hell of a good security.

  • @dazaspc

    I was going to say "Gap the rings" but everybody else has. A couple of other things though, perhaps a new rear main as they are easy and relatively cheap to replace when out and when you fit the oil pump make sure it is absolutely concentric to the crank. I check this with feeler gauges. Been caught once before on an LS and it cost me big. Also leave the timing cover loose until the harmonic is on to ensure it is also concentric.

    Double row timing chains can be a bit of a hassle boys as it very may well foul the oil pump/timing cover. We used a 'Rollmaster red' timing set on the Turbo Tonner and was a great piece. Hope you fellas have invested in a trunion upgrade for the stock rockers aswell!

    • @BonusChip
      @BonusChip 2 роки тому

      Yep. Things they don't tell you when you buy it. I've just put a double row in my ls1 turbo build and had to clearance the timing cover slightly. Not a big deal but definitely something to consider if you're going to go double row. I'm sick of buying parts that "fit" only to find out you need to customise them or something around them. Bought a steam vent kit to suit stock LS1, doesn't fit under stock LS1 intake manifold. Had to buy spacers for the manifold.

    Great job on deciding to replace that timing set. That smart washer you are using is great. My brother and I had a shop in the late 90's rebuildable steering parts and cv axles. Safety kleen gave us a new type parts washer they were researching and it was the enzyme parts washer. I remember it being warm. When we would do alot of parts washing and it would get really dirty we would let it set over night and the next morning when we came in to work it would be clean. That was awesome. One time it took 2 days cause we over did it. We still had our other one. Thanx for the content brother. You guys are funny.

    That camshaft is quite sizeable, DO NOT put the heads back together without checking coil bind heights, installed heights and retainer to seal clearance. Otherwise this will end in tears unfortunately.
    Also piston to valve clearances will need to be checked and I’m putting money on you needing valve reliefs cut into the pistons.
    Personally my opinion is that camshaft is too aggressive for what your after.

    A lot of people are talking about gaping rings...If it's a worn engine and your boost is not going to exceed 15lbs don't do it. If you are going for 15+boost you should renew it all and gap 25-30 thou depending on how bigger game you are going to play...David Vizard has a really good video on ring gaps, rpm, sustained boost and nitrous...you have to allow for bed in and wear and beware of the affects of excessive blowby/ventilation on engine performance and limited life.
