- Another in a series of videos that didn't need to be made: the venerated ChiCom chest rig "plays well" with ALICE gear. Huge surprise there, I know.
Did what I could for the light level in post, hopefully enough is visible for you to get the gist of what I'm trying to say, if anything.
This is the exact same set up I ran back the 1980's with 82nd Div. LRSU. Worked great. Extra ammo, trauma bandages and compass in the grenade pouches and an extra map in a pocket I added to the back of the rig. Just enough to fight and survive if you had to ditch your rucksack and LBE during an E&E.
It's awesome you could get away with using them in your unit. Last piece of LBE/ webbing I'd ever get rid of.

@uncled0nkey675 Surprisingly, I was the only one on the teams who ran with the chest rig. It was the 80's and still very conventional. We had an NCO who owned a Leatherman and an aimpoint and they called him the gadget master. Actually made fun of him

I upgraded from just ALICE to a surplus Kenyan LBV (it's like a hybrid between a US LBV88 and a British LBV) that uses the ALICE belt. The straps that connect the belt and vest take up a good bit of space on the belt, but you can still mount a butt pack and canteens and probably fit a couple mag pouches if you wanted to. But the vest has 2 designated triple mag pouches, as well as 4 other pouches that can fit 3 mags. It also has 2 pouches for canteens, so you can carry up to 4 canteens. you can also put some sort of pouch on the lower back of the vest, so I have pretty much 2 buttpacks.
Your environment looks pretty similar to mine. some areas are mostly completely unwalkable due to the dense vegetation, so I carry a machete most of the time i'm out doing whatever in there. unless i'm cutting down an invasive species, I only cut enough so I can walk through if I need to, or to clear up the trail.
yeah, it gets very dense in the summer. never impassable, except in clearcuts that blackberry took over and bears/ moose didnt bust through, so I try to keep things slick and tight, as opposed to chopping through. its not like down south with the greenbriar, or appalachia's laurel hells that you just cannot get through. just not a fan of vests, myself. guys seem to get good use out of them.

I ran a 4 cell version with a Hungarian 3 cell belt pouch for a long time. Super cheap setup and gets you a full combat load with an AK.
Type 81 four cell is worth every week it takes to slow boat from China. Still working on finding a setup for the AKs I'm happy with, but it will definitely include that.
