    WOW!!!!!!!
I fished two straight days in the Ray Scott as a Co angler on Eufala last year. Never had a bite!!!!! Never sat down unless the boat was gear and we were moving. Never got discouraged. Never got upset when my boater was throwing a shakeyhead on rock piles live scoping spots. The only thing on my mind was “what can I do in this situation to catch a bass?” That’s unreal.

I fished as a Coangler for years. I had good boaters and some not so good. I have had boaters tell me where to cast after he tried, I had boaters leave my ass away from fishable water. But he is the captain and I’m along for the ride. I have caught so many fish behind my boater. Good boaters far out weigh the bad ones. But I never complained and anything. I just kept slinging my cricket. If that didn’t work I’d try something else. And I did what ever my boater needed me to do. I love the back seat, but I’m sure glad I’m the captain now. I take care of my backseater as best I can but I’m out there to cash a check.

I fished 8 years as a co angler, and I realized that the guy in the front is doing his own thing, and it was my responsibility to do mine. He paid a lot more than me to fish the front and if I wanted to fish the front I would pay up. My last year as a Co angler I out fished the front deck the whole season and made the Championship.

I've been fishing in FL for 17 years now. If your lure hits the water in a FL lake, consider it a good cast. The bass here can be just about anywhere. Yes, there can be "better" areas to cast to, but when you have docks and nearly endless vegetation, just getting your lure in the water can get you a bite. This co-angler was a fool.

I have fished as a co-angler for the last 3 years on the BFL, Toyota and Opens. The guy in the back of your boat more than likely acts this way in all aspects of his life. He probably never dealt with real adversity ever in his life and I can only assume he is in his early 20's and feels entitled. I have been blessed with having 99% great boaters, but just like co-anglers there are some very bad boaters out there. I have many a friend who are boaters who will warn me about certain guys. 2 years ago I had a boater who within 2 minutes of getting in the boat tell me that I have the back 180 and he has the front. And read me the riot act about he will not put up with a cast in front of the console. Now he is 32 and I was 50. I was like alright not a problem I will respect that but under no circumstances will you use that tone with me again as I won't let anyone take that tone with me. after the 1st hour he is doing his deal and I am in the back doing mine and they come up busting 60 feet behind the motor. I cast out there and hook up to a 3lbs LM and instead of getting the net he whips the nose of the boat around and bombs a cast as soon as it's in his 180. I netted my own fish and he never hooked up. I just said Karmas a bitch with a smile and he looked at me head down and said yep I deserved that. We got along great the rest of the day and had a great time. respect is earned and that is the major problem now a days is respect is in short supply

There is always PLENTY of places to fish as a co-angler. Any fisherman worth their salt, especially pros, will tell you that there are always lots of fish cruising around the main spots. There are always little "satellite" holes around the good holes that hold fish. There are always fish that spook and quickly come back into a hole that's been blown out or already fished that you can catch. As a co-angler, it's supposed to be understood that you're 2nd fiddle to the boater. The boater ultimately makes the decisions, they get first choice of the holes, etc and you have to work around that. That's just how it is. If you don't like it, you have 3 choices... stop fishing, go buy your own $70,000+ boat, fill it with $10,000+ in tackle, pay the insurance on it, pay for the gas every day on it, pay for the registration on it, pay for the maintenance on it, etc, or go get your own sponsors to pay for some of it but that won't happen because you're probably a pain to deal with and not a very good representative of their company.

WOW !!! Whatever happened to being appreciative to be out fishing and have an opportunity to learn while on someone else’s boat. I mean as a co- angler you know that you don’t always get to cast to those best spots due to conditions and locations. So you adjust!
I’ve been a co- angler many times and instead of being a distraction I help by throwing something different to help find the pattern that works best. And I have out fished my partner up front using live target many times! Teamwork makes the dream work. Not being a bitch!!!!

Matt, I agree with everything you brought up in this video. He was wrong on all aspects. However I do have a question? Why do some boaters think as a co-angler we should be there just to learn? I am 60 years old and have been fishing since before you were born. Now I am not saying I cant learn something, I try to every time I go out on the water. I own 3 boats and still would rather fish as a co-angler in tournaments. For me it takes all the stress out of the day and I can just enjoy fishing. Like you said it's cheaper than a guide service. LOL But please remember not all co-anglers don't know what they are doing.

    • @mattwfishing

Good point. But you’re also probably not the guy to whine and complain about what I’m doing. You’ll put your head down and work with the water you’re presented with like any angler should. There are some Horror stories about other cos that I hear. At the chick Toyota I heard a boater saying that his co angler was telling him that he didn’t know Jack about what he’s doing bc he couldn’t find fish on a shad spawn and that was Theo convo the night before the day even started LOLOL. Respect, open mindedness, and a good attitude are the key to being a great co.

Any reasonable co would put together how lopsided the entire experience is when it comes to time and money and so YES it is about you and it should be about you. Boats are expensive as hell with payments, insurance, maintenance, getting it to the tournament, gas, money, finding the fish during practice, and on and on. Like you said the coangler‘s show up and go fishing. If he doesn’t like the set up, he can get his own boat or start fishing the kayak tournaments. Solved! 😁 Dude you handled this really well! Good job! You should have called his bluff, and been like alright let’s go because you know he was just being a jerk. 😂

Jesus. Why even enter the tournament? I just don't get it. A bad day out on the water beats a good day in the office. Every time. I have had tons of bad fishing days, but those days weren't bad days in the slightest. Also, sounds like this guy doesn't know what a co-angler is. lol. You are there to fish off the back of someone's boat. You know what you signed up for. It is different fishing for sure, but if you are good you adapt and catch what you can. And it is very hard. Lots of blanks come out of the co-anglers, but that's just how it is. You are there to learn and spend the day fishing. It is not your job to set him up. You handled this beautifully.

Ive fished 100s of pro ams. BFLs, Strens, Bass, etc... Which means I have had 100s of Co Anglers in which a lot of them have become good friends. I can count on one finger the amount of idiots I drew. Sure I had some inexperienced anglers, but most of them were just asking a lot of questions picking my brain. Which is fine. I actually spill the beans when they ask. But there was this one guy at the Red River that I will never forget. I had a Basscat Cougar with a 250 optimax. This was back in 2005. My boat would run close to 80. Which was fast back then. Well, I come out of the lock, and travel about 10 miles to my spot. When we get there, he informs me his cigarettes flew out which he had in his front shirt pocket. Of course I say Im sorry but we were nowhere near any store. I honestly would have taken him to a store had we been close to one. But by the time 11am rolled around, he was having severe withdrawals and literally yelling at me to take him to get cigarettes. He threatened me, he told me he would not sign the weigh in slip, etc... I apologized but told him we were not going back early. I actually had a good sack of fish. He literally laid down in the back of the boat the rest of the day . He finally shut up about it. But he did keep his promise. He did not sign my weigh in slip. I told the tournament director what happened right in front of him. The tournament director looked at him and said is this the case. He admitted that it was and said I was an asshole for not getting him some cigarettes. The director was nice to him and told him he would take care of it. After the guy walked off the director told me jokingly, if your co angler smokes, always bring an extra pack of cigs from now on. He went and talked to a few different competitors and came back and said my weight would count. Never heard a peep since. Im sure everybody that reads this has had a day like that. Its just inevitable.

Lol. Theres bad boaters to. Rich guys. Sometimes you got to give em a crankbait so they can get a limit. Sometimes they say theres an invisible line
Dont cross it ,dont cast over it, then they lose a fish and i say mmmmm i coulda netted him if that invisible line hadnt been in my way. Lol. Personal experience here. I think most non boaters own their own boats. Some of em are better then some of the boaters.
    Go's both ways.
    Just gotta keep on fishin!
Pray you get a good partner.
No matter which side your on.
Shoulda asked him if he just started his period when he said he wanted to go home.!

If everyone here is in agreement that you handled that well and that’s to be expected, I definitely wouldn’t be cut out to be a co-angler. Lol. Never did any competition bass fishing. Placed well and not so well in catfishing tournaments. But I don’t know anything about the arrangement that boaters and co-anglers have. Do co-anglers pay entry?

I get he has to deal with the situation and should not want to go home. My issue with boaters is the ones who think they are pros just bc they have a boat and fish a BFL (LOL) and finish 100th. A high percentage of COs have boats and will probably out fish the "PRO" A perfect way to get COs out of your boat is move up to a circuit that is legit PRO only...while your in a BFL (or a legend in your own mind) help a dude out....what goes around comes around...ALWAYS

I didn’t do anything to handicap him at all. The water we were fishing before 11 wasn’t IDEAL, but there was definitely fishable water and I caught fish off of the dock pylons in practice.

MY DUDE!! I’m 12 minutes into this and your coangler has me pissed!! I am a coangler…… FLIP THE DOCK POSTS!!! Ask to cast opposite dock than the boater!! WORK WITH YOUR BOATER!!! FFS…. A coangler is not competing against a boater. Work WITH them, fish YOUR TOURNAMENT, and make the best of it. Wanna fish your way? GET YOUR OWN DAMN BOAT!!!!
Ok….off my soapbox. Any angler that I get paired with please note: YOURE MY PARTNER, as far as I’m concerned. Need a net man? I’m it. Need me to bake water(happened on Harris this Spring)? IM BALING! I’ve been out fished being in the back of the boat….I won’t be out FUNNED!!!
