'Rickrolling' has been one of my favourite memes since it first came out and it never seems to get old. Rick Astley is so humble about it, I'm pleased that he's profited well from the meme, he deserves it.
It's a feel-good meme. I have to agree... it's not like jumpscares or anything, there's literally no harm to it. It's just an unexpected moment of cheesy fun.
And he has the best of both worlds. On stage, sing, off, then no tours or business crap. Then he gets to spend his time with his family! That, I think, is heaven for him.
Couldn't agree more. Definitely not "lost in showbiz" unlike many Z-list Celebs. He seems like a very level-headed chap. It's funny that his teenage daughter had to explain to him what was going on. I used to play keyboard with a couple of bands, a guitarist I knew said that he once got to rick-roll an entire audience at a music festival and they all found it very funny!
He is the Anti-Streisand effect - take something that could be apparently embarrassing, accept it, and allow yourself to be part of the popular zeitgeist (and be rewarded for it!)
I detested him till he was interviewed in the late 80's. He was interviewed about the song and if he thought the song would be number one when he recorded it. His reply was that he still could not believe it because he thought the song was crap and he only did it because he needed the money. That is a level of honesty you have to respect.
I think the lovely thing about this meme is that I haven't noticed people hating it. Yes they express the "D'oh!" reaction but they all feel good about the song or lyrics when they pop up. It's a feel good joke.
You should have seen people's reactions around 2009-2010, people HATED it. It's a "feel good joke" now cause it's so old and not many fall for it. It's so easy to spot now that when you do fall for it, most recognize it was their own fault.

So here is a funny story. I used to mess with my friend all the time by linking him this video in steam after he would send me something. He never learned not to click it, lol. Well, at his wedding he had a dj playing songs. No one was dancing at all. Then this song comes on and just about everyone there gets out on the dance floor and starts dancing to it. Turns out my friend, the groom, went up to the dj and asked to put this song on. The dj said "uh no dude" and my friend responds with "uh yea, I'm the groom, your putting this on." It was kind of an inside joke between me and him but the joke turned into the only song that got people dancing at his wedding. Even as a joke this song is still a good song.
I had no idea Rickrolling was a thing when I returned to college and got a whole lot of eye rolling when I played what had been a very popular song in my youth on a jukebox in the student center.

Awww. Rick seems like such a genuinely good person. I think that makes it even better that he is immortalized in culture. Glad he has taken it with a good sense of humor.
One time in class, the teachers had software that allowed them to project their iPads on screen, but none of them set a password. One student noticed that nobody set a password on their computer, so they just got random rooms and would project the Never Gonna Give You Up music video onto the screens from their iPad. So one time when I was in class (which that teacher Rickrolled us a couple months before), they heard something quiet from their speakers, turned it up, and it was the song. The teacher just then said, “Did we just get Rickrolled? I think it’s time to set a password on my computer,” in a totally serious voice before laughing at it. Lol.
Rick is really cool dude, clear head and honest. Look at the Foo Fighters "feat" or any of the recent lives.. He is damn good at what he does and as a baritone myself... we need more baritones...

Astley is so wholesome, in the end it was a really good thing someone chose his video randomly so many years ago for this fad, imagine if the artist was a douche about it, or tried to grab the fame from it, it would've ruined the joke, or changed into something else. Rickrolling was just the perfect sum of parts to make it work, for so long, that's good, that's really good, to have something that's pure fun, in this ever more depressing world. Good informative video as always, for more from Astley directly watch his interview on the Graham Norton show about this, with Melissa McCarthy.
Great song, great meme. I can honestly say I enjoyed every single rick roll I stumbled into. Well, I put it like this, even the rick rolls that I didn't like, I really kinda did. Good to see he saw it in a positive light and also got publicity and solid momentum for his new material.
I remember Rick was once quoted as saying something like "Well...someone got an idea and ran with it." A little surprised that quote didn't appear here, but not really disappointed or anything. Fun video!
Thank you I have been rickrolled by a youtuber (all of there viewers were) but I didn't understand the actual joke of rickrolling as I heard of the joke before But I never bothered looking it up because I was sure I would just get the wrong answer (from reading a news article) and would expect it as true never knowing that the article is wrong. Why do I trust this channel? because they've gotten the answer right before. I'm glad Rick Astley doesn't see rickrolling as a bad thing most stars would grow to recent it he also thinks he's lucky for the life he's had and I agree. I have huge respect for rick now. ~Raven
I took my sister to see Rick Astley in concert back in 1989, in St. George, Utah. Rick was touring the US with Martika as his opening act. He was so very cordial and respectful to the audience--even when some crazy woman threw her bra on stage, he picked it up, smiled, and said "Someone lost something". Cracked the audience up! The most memorable moment was when he brought a chair out and then sat down to sing his rendition of Nat King Cole's "When I Fall In Love". While he sang you could hear a pin drop, then when there was the break, the crowd went wild before going quiet when Rick resumed the song. I managed to get one of his towels he used to wipe his face (have since lost it) and Rick used some incredible nice cologne that made me and my sister swoon. He was a one in a million gentleman and I will never ever forget that concert. So glad to hear he's been blessed and is still the same Rick from 30+ years ago.
Unless I'm going senile, I swear back when I was in college people were already doing this kind of thing on IRC which was a couple years earlier than 2008, like with links to roms and shit.

This is so funny... I didn't even realize Rickrolling was a thing, until now I look back, I was on the Toolband website, some few years ago in their news section they had a link to click for brand new unreleased footage of the new album, or a new video or something. Everyone was so anxious for anything new from Tool, it was the perfect setup. I laughed pretty hard getting duped into opening up the Rick Astley video. Nice!
A mate of mine showed me that clip. It's the trailer for a film called Hungry Bitches. I told him, this isn't porn, it's the most vile piece of cinematography I've ever seen.
Yeah, that's part of the joke too. Seeing the video for the first time, you get stumped by something completely different from what you expected. Like a Rickroll.

For anyone who doesn't already know, 2 Girls 1 cup is an inspirational story of a girl who looses her cup, and must travel across the land. Along the road, she meets a friend who decides to join her on her quest, and together, they must overcome challenges and such. Eventually they find the cup, and in an act of kindness, her friend offers to fill it up for her. She conjures a magic substance inside of the cup, which after begin consumed, magically returns to the cup, thus providing the girl with the prize, of an endless cup. My favorite was when the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade got Rickrolled.
This video made me really happy, he seems like a nice dude, im glad hes having a good time
Astley is so wholesome, in the end it was a really good thing someone chose his video randomly so many years ago for this fad, imagine if the artist was a douche about it, or tried to grab the fame from it, it would've ruined the joke, or changed into something else. Rickrolling was just the perfect sum of parts to make it work, for so long, that's good, that's really good, to have something that's pure fun, in this ever more depressing world. Good informative video as always, for more from Astley directly watch his interview on the Graham Norton show about this, with Melissa McCarthy.
Damn, Rick hasn't aged
Great song, great meme. I can honestly say I enjoyed every single rick roll I stumbled into. Well, I put it like this, even the rick rolls that I didn't like, I really kinda did. Good to see he saw it in a positive light and also got publicity and solid momentum for his new material.
Is this behind the meme???
ua-cam.com/video/6n3pFFPSlW4/v-deo.html
Isaac Carter I want a whole series
@@ShitStainedBallSack god stop
Man he's so wholesome, why are all the memes so kind and humble?
With 12 dollars he could get 3 months of nord vpn
😆😂
The guy who started the Rickrolling: lol that's me
Rick Astley's new album really isn't that bad. It completely not my type of music but production is rather good and the guy can sing well.
Who spotted Simon cleverly at 3:12 saying “Ricklusive” .... a pun on Reclusive, but with Rick’s name. lol.
Well, now I know where that term came from. Thanks, Simon!
I remember Rick was once quoted as saying something like "Well...someone got an idea and ran with it." A little surprised that quote didn't appear here, but not really disappointed or anything. Fun video!
Not going to lie. Now that I'm old I still enjoy the song and I'm good with being rickrolled jaja
I had no idea Rick Astley was English either. You really do learn something new every day.
~Raven
Being RickRolled by an educational channel in 2020 during the quarantine... I love this channel :)
So he didn’t want to milk it by doing infinite remixes when it got popular.
The complete opposite of old time road
What a class act, thanks for making this one.
This caliber is why I peruse your backlog of videos, Simon!
Hmm did anyone else’s video skip from 7:23 to 8:40?! Almost like it skipped something I didn’t give 2 shits about.. Weird! 😏
He seems like such a sincere, genuine, and grounded guy. That’s so rare in celebrities
I actually like that song.
Imagine being the person who has that raincoat now though. You most likely couldn't sell it legitimately but you'd essentially have a gold mine
Richard Dawkins coined the word "meme", and it was good... I love bonus facts.
Was I just rick rolled?
Yes, yes we were
The Macy's Parade appearance brought the whole thing to an end. Nobody could top that.
Unless I'm going senile, I swear back when I was in college people were already doing this kind of thing on IRC which was a couple years earlier than 2008, like with links to roms and shit.
I remember getting Rick rolled around the same time. Damn near started when UA-cam did!
I was around back when people were tricking people with links to Goatse (don't do an image search if you don't know what it is).
The guy has such a great attitude and outlook on life. Nice one Rick
Fun fact : if you still enjoy the meme of rickroll, your a legend
OGBB!
I remember listening to this song for the first time on roblox and kinda liking it and I didn’t know about the meme at the time so I was genuinely liking the song
Sumbitch embraced the meme. Rick truly had the last laugh.
0:13 *We've been tricked, backstab, and quite possibly Rick Rolled*
Ahh 80's cheese😍
Here’s how to make someone’s life miserable for a day. Go to rick astley 10 hrs and report nudity. Then someone is going to watch the entire video and find the nudity.
anybody interested in this, needs to search for the Foo Fighters and Rick Astley, you will enjoy :)
Pro Tip
Replace every windows system sound file with a 5 minute long rickroll.
Everytime they click a button or open a window a new Rickroll starts playing over the ones already playing.
You'd be surprised how long it takes most IT guys to figure out what you did.
Still kinder than Goatse
Christmas Island represent! :D
#sayKIRIBAS \ goatse.cs
the expression when two girls one cup get mentioned XD 100% accurate.
We are never gonna give up notification squad.
Nice!
3:00 it wasn’t a couple of ladies and a couple of cups...only one cup...
A mate of mine showed me that clip. It's the trailer for a film called Hungry Bitches. I told him, this isn't porn, it's the most vile piece of cinematography I've ever seen.
Trent Bergin: Oh, don't you worry Trent, the massive volume of what gets inserted into the cup more than makes up for the lack of cups...
At 3:00. Did he describe Astley as "Ricklusive?"
For those of you pushing 40 (like I am), when this debuted on the radio... how many of you thought it was a black guy singing?
Denji2006: Literally Everyone, apart from those who knew Rick or were involved with the studio when Rick recorded the song.
Yeah everyone did mate, me included 😊
@IwasMurloc Not so much proud of the white race, but proud of Rick.having such a great voice
IwasMurloc What low IQ loser gets "proud of a race" because some guy had great bass vocals...? Go back to your Steve Wilkos shows.
Yeah, that's part of the joke too. Seeing the video for the first time, you get stumped by something completely different from what you expected. Like a Rickroll.
I love this song. Getting Rickrolled was never a joke to me, I would just dance and sing to it. Awww he has the best attitude. I didn't know he made this last album, I will check it out.
I prefer Khajiit VPN.
Why?
I prefer Dwemer vpn. You will never be able to track it.
Clickbait:who are you
Rickrolling: I am you but better
I don't know why, I didn't expect to be Rick rolled. I was wrong.
Same. Lol
Quarantine has brought me back to Rickrolling
My friend and I were on FaceTime and decided to rickroll someone by writing this
“Hello! This is Petco customer service. Your order for “Ferret Bed” was not processed. Click here to view a video explaining how to get your refund (insert the link here)”
He fell for it and my friend and I nearly died laughing
Rick Astley getting Rickrolled is one of the best things I've heard all week. And as it is still Saturday...
He sounds like an amazingly cool person.
the best rickroll has to be the one where he was invited on stage at a foo fighters concert
It's one of my personal favourites, and it's PG. Fun for all the family. Be sure to put it on the big screen over Christmas time for all your nieces and nephews. Give them a Christmas they'll never forget.
I never dared to watch the video and never will.
I actually wondering how it started earlier this week. Thank you. This was more thorough than I would have researched on my own. 🙂
Best of British - Rick Astley and Simon Whistler
TIL some bloke out there probably has Rick Astley's raincoat. Talk about weird flexes.
