There is something oddly charming about live action commercials for board games.

It's weird to think that 19th century European warfare was a meme in American culture up until the 1980s. The game was developed by a Dutch company during or after WWII. I supposed it grew in popularity because it's patterned after chess.
I enjoyed playing Stratego with my friends growing up in the early 80s. Even though Wellington boots, tunics, shakos, and plumes weren't part of the American psyche, the silhouetted, embossed images of a gilded look to war - which is a horror - captured the imagination in this game. No less than US Civil War imagery. Same goes for Risk. Cold Play's "Viva La Vida" comes to mind now... sobering. Thanks for putting this up.

I don't think I've ever played a legit version of this game as a kid. But I remember loving the iconography of the pieces.

Looking at this particular commercial makes me think of the "Richard Sharpe" series with Sean Bean that ran on PBS.
I prefer the old Stratego commercial from the 1960s!
