We’re two Canadians who love to cycle and travel, and in 2012 we decided to roll those passions into one by getting Bromptons! Now that we have bikes we can fold up and bring anywhere, we’re exploring the world on two wheels and sharing our adventures here.

Toronto to New York by Train, Plane & Bicycle

It's always a fun challenge to NOT take a motor vehicle when traveling in North America. The Bromptons make it pretty easy, and New York has decent enough bike infrastructure to cycle from LaGuardia Airport to Brooklyn - and get there faster than if we'd taken transit or a taxi - so we biked it! 00:00 Leaving Toronto 00:14 Packing the Brompton 00:49 On the UP Express train 00:56 Pearson Airport...

Thanksgiving but with bike cranks! DING! DING! to all who celebrate. We began our ride at Pedaal with some tasty treats, then cycled east on the Bloor St. / Danforth Ave. bike lanes to Dawes Rd. to get to Taylor Creek Park where we enjoyed the fall colours on this unseasonably warm October day. We made it to the Brick Works just in time to grab lunch, then headed down to St. Lawrence Market whe...

This year's BrompTOberfest began with a fold challenge at the best bike store & cafe in Toronto, Pedaal! Then the incomparable Janet Joy led us on a ride around the city to three pieces of art by German artists Festival Walkway, Toronto Man, and the Frankfurt & Toronto Sister Cities mural. Appropriately, the ride ended at German Döner Kebab. 00:00 BrompTOberfest 2024 begins! 00:15 Brompton fold...

G line is not a Brompton. Its only a very expensive Tern
If it folds like a Brompton, it's a Brompton! I have a Tern as well, and though it has the same 20" tires as the G Line, the Tern's fold is HUGE and the Tern doesn't even roll while folded. Yes, the G Line folded is bigger than the Brompton C Line folded, but no matter the size, the Brompton folds so much better than a Tern.
I own a Zizzo, and one of the advantages of it is the weight. It's aluminum, so although it's chunky, it weighs less than 30 lbs. The lower end Bromptons are steel, so they're heavier. But the big drawback of the Zizzo is the folding - everything on it is a hassle and nothing in the folding process works right unless you adjust everything just right.
Accurate! Except the weight of a steel Brompton is only 24lbs. Yep, it's pretty light.
@@bromptoning I just watched a video that weighed a Brompton at 29 lbs.
... what a lovely city!
We agree! Toronto is often underrated despite its beautiful and fun places!
A good review that explains the difference between cost and value. Quality is more always more costly, and usually (but not always) better value. Your mum and you are both getting good value from your bikes… and that’s what matters.
You guys are so cute and so fun! Thanks for the inspiring video!
☺ It was our pleasure!
Indeed looks like a lot of fun (more toy than business, as you said)
Love your channel! Did you find the G line to be faster through the gear range than your standard Brompton?
Thanks! We didn't find the G Line faster than our Bromptons, but note that we both have 54t chainrings and 6-speeds on them, so we're used to going faster than standard Brompton bicycles. If you're used to the 50t chainring, or the 44t chainring, you may find the G Line is faster. The G Line's Shimano 8-speed internal hub does shift nice and smooth, though!
Wow, killer machine. Have to go to Cologne to one of my favourite Brompton dealer to get one 🥰
The Brompton dealer in Cologne is so nice! But yes, Europe has the G Line RIGHT NOW (lucky you guys!), but it won't be available in North America until 2025. Pedaal's co-owner was able to get this G Line because he's British and bought one over there. But Pedaal is taking preorders and the G Lines will officially arrive in their store in Toronto in April 2025.
@@bromptoning I'm not British but was in London on 10-October and brought one back to the USA. Love the bike and thanks for sharing.
@@bluecalvette Congrats on your new G Line! Have fun!
Great review! I have a Brompton...I'm just under 5'5 but worried that the regular will be too big...or will the extra length help keep the legs dry more? I can see you tried the regular but preferred the short, why is that, it just felt more comfortable? Did you try riding with the regular?
Good question! For me (I'm 5'4"), the regular seemed to come too far past my hands. The cape should cover your hands, but you want your hands to be where the loops are. The short length still completely covers my legs when I'm cycling.
awesome and epic!
Please just say up not U.P. That's like pronouncing the second t in toronto...
Huh. I just learned there is a big debate whether to say "U.P." or "up". No surprise, no one can agree. In real life, I've only ever heard "U.P. Express" so 🤷
Very nice! Did you have any issues with sending the Brompton’s in the airplane as luggage?
Checking the Bromptons in as luggage is a little different every time. Sometimes, no one bats an eye, they just check us in and away the bike goes. Often then direct us to the Fragile/Oversized conveyer belt (no extra fee), but not always. This time we were sent to Oversized, but the people working there made us unpack the Bromptons and show us what they were. So that was a first! But the bikes made it to New York without issue. 👍
Ah so cool 🥰 Can't wait to see the 5 Boro video, this event is a dream ☺
It was so much fun! Even with the rain we go this year. ☔
Impressive!
I am glad you have a Brompton. If Columbia would had built folding bikes in a state like West Virginia, Columbia be still in business. I believe only Cannondale is left, but I do not know if they still build bicycles in the Allegheny mountains of Pennsylvania. I think I bought a folding bicycle made by political and religious prisoners in communist China. It looks I welded the bike with welding equipment sold by Harbor Freight Tools! Be careful when crossing the border if Harris becomes president!
The privileged socialists of the NDP dont care about Toronto, they just want more room to ride bicycles while local businesses are DECIMATED. #VotePC
Actually, local businesses love the bike lanes because they bring MORE customers. ua-cam.com/video/NBFfDJtTIA4/v-deo.htmlsi=krhfh3Uz0-WTkqmF
@bromptoning “Protected bike lanes do not guarantee safer streets, but it will mean a loss of business,” Gary O’Neill, owner of the Aubergine Cafe on Skillman BUSINESS OWNERS overwhelmingly complain about this obvious fact. Only far left socialists and liberal elites want businesses to suffer for the sake of underused bicycle lanes. You're spreading lies and propaganda to line your pocket with money. How long have you sold luxury bicycles for? RIP THEM OUT DOUGGIE!!! #VotePC
Great fall colours.
Sure were, and they were just starting. 🍂
DOUG FORD IS RIPPING THEM OUT OF THE GROUND😂😂😂 NO ONE USES BIKE LANES 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
The lanes are used. The City of Toronto has data on the thousands of cyclists who bike on Bloor Street. Ford is spreading lies to pander to drivers who want to blame someone else for the traffic. But cars ARE traffic. The only way to improve traffic is to have less cars on the road, and the only way to have less cars on the road is to give people other modes of transportation.
@bromptoning Wrong. Removing lanes for vehicles and designating them for bicycles is literally making gridlock worse in the city. My community has petitioned heavily for the removal of bike lanes and Doug Ford has listened. I have voted Liberal my whole life and I'm now switching to the PC Party. Cyclists have become brash, pompous, and ignorant. You were given an inch and you all lied your way to seizing a mile. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. Doug will get another majority and you will lose EVERYTHING.
@@leflopjames5628 I'm not wrong. Here's a video explaining induced demand: ua-cam.com/video/h4Dn1njxIe4/v-deo.html This isn't a new concept; urban planners have know about this problem for a while, which is why they are trying to offer people other methods of transportation, such as cycling and transit.
@bromptoning You are definitely WRONG. Cycling lanes are virtually unused. Taking lanes from drivers and putting in severely underused bike lanes is a disgrace. SHAME ON YOU. Bloor West and Etobicoke has been terrorized by seldom used bike lanes causing vehicular gridlock. Seniors and the disabled can't access High Park. Bloor Street businesses have lost all drive up/park customers. I drive that route everyday and I DO NOT SEE CYCLISTS IN THE BIKE LANE. You don't care at all about Toronto, you're just pushing a juvenile and selfish agenda. DOUG FORD WILL RIP THEM OUT!!! 😆
Can't argue with crazy. 🤷
Loved your video! Thanks for posting this. I think you bought me with the Cleverhood! Also, any chance you can tell me where you got your lovely wooden table? 😍 Thanks @bromptoning
Thanks @fulvio.silvestri And our table is a Madera model made by Article.

เอาเบาะลงสุดยังคะ ฉันสูง 160 จะขี่ได้ไหม น้ำหนักมันเยอะไหมคะ
You can lower the seat. I like my seat high so that my legs can fully extend when pedalling. Some people like the seat lower, and it can definitely go lower that where I've set it. The Strida EVO weighs about 12kgs. So pretty light.
Hmm … this is not typical Bavarian lifestyle 😅 Missing beer, dirndl and lederhosen 😅 But it's nice to see you fellas cruising around your city
True! This wasn't a pub crawl, though if we had lederhosen, we'd definitely wear it! Maybe something to source for next year's BrompTOberfest ride. 😄
@aedamhaeng woke liberal elites destroying local businesses and causing traffic chaos for the sake of shilling overpriced bicycles. What a disgusting and self serving cohort of society.

@@bromptoning ตอนนี้ยังขี่อยู่ไหม ขี่ยากไหม
@@chanal910 I am. The Strida is tricky to ride - the narrow wheel base and small tires make it twitchy, but once you get used to it, it's fun.

great review! thank you!
I bought a Chinese - Copy Strida and found it a horrible bike to ride, as 6"+! The drive belt was heavy when riding and I didn't like it at all! So I left it when I sold my house. And only "folding" into a "long thing". I liked the fold down handlebar! and the disc brakes, though only mechanical. Finn. Denmark
I've heard the copycat Stridas are horrible! The belt drive should feel light and barely there - at least that's how mine is. Though I image being a tall person on a Strida, whether authentic or copycat, might not be the best fit.
I have both bikes in the lightweight models Zizzo Liberte and Brompton P-line and bags that interchange Zizzo is cool that way. Brompton always comes in with me, if necessary Zizzo can go on the bus rack or be locked outside briefly. Love both for different reasons, i use the Brompton more at 72 y.o. they're for my mobility.
Exactly! Different bikes for different reasons. But no matter what, they're a great mobility device. 😃

Great clip! My wife and I have done that route…….but not in one fell swoop. We recognized all the sights you featured. We’re north of 75 and have Brompton P Line Electrics. Love them. But I’m getting over a triple bypass from late May so they’re gathering dust at the moment. But we plan on being back in the saddle as soon as possible. Also…..you all appeared amazingly fresh by the time you arrived in Ajax……..good on ya!
Thanks! And my Brompton is currently gathering a bit of dust too - I broke my hand in late May. I'm now riding my Tern because the hydraulic disc brakes are so much easier to depress with my weak, injured hand, but soon I hope to have strength enough to ride the Brompton with its caliper brakes. Hope you're back in the saddle soon as well!
I own a couple of Dahon folding bikes and they're just fine for my purposes. HOWEVER, if I were flying internationally and having to take the bike in/out of hotels, on trains and planes, I'd definitely purchase a Brompton which can conveniently fit into a carry-on suitcase and - in a folding bag - can be taken on to any means of transport - HUGE advantage to Brompton in this respect.
100%! Compact travel is the Brompton's big advantage.
Staying with the bikes one is wont to wonder if there is a road to the summit (that’s cycle-able) and also if it may be hiked up.
There is a road to the summit, and I imagine you could bike up too if you wanted to! You can definitely hike the summit; we saw people doing that.
Strida
Cool video, great choice of music makes it so much more interesting. I'll be there next week from Ontario...can't wait.
Have an amazing time!
@@bromptoning oh yes thank you. I'm here now, my third day. Did the Petit Train Route, The Lachine canal, inner city trails, LaSalle to LaRonde. I look like a lobster...lol I much prefer the fall...tomorrow light rain!
Great analysis. Still love my MEC Origami because it has regular bike parts on it. Less proprietary. But Bromptons seem to be the best built. Were you wearing a folding helmet in this?
Yes, I am wearing a folding helmet! It's a Closca. :)
That is an all day ride. I am a bit of an expert of the area. I always wonder what visitors think of the bridges and the loop de loops underneath them.
Love the loop de loops! Fun to ride, and best of all, the loops avoid traffic intersections so we never have to interact with cars or wait for lights to change.
Cool animated graphic at the end.
Thanks! We just plugged our GPX data into the Relive app and the app creates it!

Wonderful !😊Greetings from a german folding biker ! ❤❤❤
Hello! Nice to virtually meet you!
Will be riding one of these
3:02 Ha, ha. Someone is playing games with Google users. That's definitely not the bike path. You're supposed to just keep going on the paved section. From Ste-Agathe, the next town is St-Faustin, but there's not much in between for 40 km. There was some work being done to pave sections, but it will never lead you off to an unrideable area.
Oh, we know that wasn't the path! Google led us astray.
Practical informaton if you're riding from Montreal. There are actually three uses of the term "Tremblant" which may be confusing to some visitors. 1) Tremblant: It is the ski resort (i.e. property owned by Altera Mountain Company) and the village at the base of the lift on the South side of the mountain. 2) Mont-Tremblant: Municipality of Mont-Tremblant, which is located around Lac Mercier. This is also known as "Village du Mont-Tremblant". If you want to go here, you can also ask directions to "Lac Mercier" and this will avoid confusion about where you want to go. 3) Mont-Tremblant (St-Jovite): This is the "downtown" area where all the restaurants, shopping areas and services are. It used to be called St-Jovite. This is where you'll find grocery stores and more lodging. The PTN bike trail will take you to both St-Jovite (with a slight detour necessary on 327S) and Lac Mercier areas. The fare scheme from Montreal to St-Jerôme on the Exo train has also been updated. You should now look for the "ABC" fare, which takes you from downtown Montreal (Zone A) to St-Jérôme (Zone C). This ticket allows you to ride the métro in Montreal, and then board the train at Parc or other Stations like de La Concorde in Laval. The train does not run into the city on weekends. You must validate your ticket at the scanning device, which is located right where you buy the ticket from the machine. Even if you ride from zone B to C, you still need an ABC fare. The fare is based on location, not distance traveled. You can bike on the Petit train du Nord (PTN) bike path from St-Jérôme to Mont-Tremblant and the distance is about 90 km, with a 2-3% average gradient. (It is gravel and paved in some sections and a road bike tire is very adequate. There is also bus service from Montreal to Mont-Tremblant, beginning May 2024, which will accept a Brompton, provided you indicate it when you buy your ticket from the Galland Bus Service, located at Berri. Fare is about $35CAD, and the distance is about 125km or about a 2.5 hour ride with all the stops.
Come again. Many bicycle paths (bike lanes) and friends. Good restaurants and “coffees”. Nice video. 😊❤
Thanks! We always enjoy visiting Montreal. It's an amazing city!
Proof that wearing a cape on a bike doesn't have to be dorky. I'm becoming more cape adjacent by the day. PS: you have the same piano as me.
Ha! Thanks! Capes really do straddle the line between dorky and practical badass. 😄
Great to see you enjoyed Montreal - come back soon! The seaway is Montreal's gift to urban cycling for sure
Agreed! Montreal has such amazing cycle routes!
Nice trip with the Brompton buddies 🤗
I wish I had a physically fit woman like you. My wife is morbidly obese, I am not.
I have a giant folding bike. Can't understand why almost all folders fold to the left, and leave the drivetrain exposed. That's one brilliant thing the brompton does, the chain is sandwicheb between the two wheels when folded. Why not fold to the right...? Also can't understand why the typical folder has the wheel axle nuts on the front and rear wheels meet when folded. It makes the folded bike like 2 inches wider. If the hinge was moved just a it forward or back, the axle nuts wouldn't meet. Thats the essence of the populatity of the Brompton. They think out and resolve all these little issues. Whereas the zizzos and giants of the world just say sod it, get the thing out the door of the factory as fast as possible :)
True! Other folding bikes are soooo wide!
Other than the construction, it looked like a great trip! Thanks for sharing your rides!!!
Honestly, the construction was kind of a highlight! I truly thought that we'd cycled across that bridge for nothing, that we wouldn't be able to get onto the island, but then... the shuttle van arrived! In Ontario, crews would have told us to turn back, that there was nothing they could do. It was refreshing to be in a province that doesn't just leave cyclists stranded.
Rolling through space and time, wonderful, greetings from Germany ! ❤❤❤
