Very informative simple and to the point. I'm ready for the season 👍 It seems like Royal Oak is pretty popular? Would you add wood to your lump early or later? Lighting cubes are a game changer 👌. This might be the best damn video for newbies. Thx for sharing

Thanks for going over the type of barrel to use and telling people not to use lined barrels. So far your the only one that advises not to. 👍 I didn't do my research until after I purchased my drum but I somehow ended up with the right one. You don't necessarily want a "Food grade drum". Most food grade drums contain a phenolic epoxy liner which is cured in a high temp oven. That means you are not burning it off, not easily anyway. Plus it smells awful and I mean AWFUL when it starts to burn! Get it sandblasted and you'll be good to go. Other than that you'll want a Food grade drum that stores some type of oil or shortening product. Luckily the one I purchased for $10 was used to store "Marconi Shortening." Marconi is just a brand name. These drums did have a thin clear coating of something to keep the drum from rusting as it waited to be filled with a food type of oil product but a quick 10 minute fire burned that up, along with the remaining shortening and that ended up fueling the fire a bit. I ended up having to use 1 1/4 inch gas pipe for mine. I was originally using 1/2 in pipe but it wasn't large enough to supply the goals with oxygen. The larger pipe solved that problem and now my smoked food is coming out absolutely amazing.

I am here for the same reasons. I bought a 36" dyna glo vertical, it will be here in a few days. Im sure you've been on the internet religiously but I recommend you checking out a simple modification video from a guy on UA-cam named Nick Estrada. Between that and getting some wireless probe thermometers I'm feeling confident! Now I'm trying to figure out how to actually GET going once it comes in. Best of luck to you my friend!!

@@SA-ot8di Thx. My thermometers came in last week so I'm ready. At took me about 30mins to assemble because I applied black RTV adhesive in small gaped areas to prevent smoke from escaping. I got that trick from YT as well. I just wanted the smoke to leave the chimney only. *Don't apply the thermostat too tightly because the metal is fragile* Just tighten the bolt until it snugs👌 Now I'm ready to season it and then the games BEGIN!!! CHEERS TO YOU now let's stank up the neighborhood lol Enjoy your DynaGlo

I'm looking into building an UDS. That old barrel with all the holes in it and rectangular bottom holes/vents. Was that used for a Big Poppa Smoker kit? I've been interested in getting one of those kits to start with. Although I like the idea of having the vertical vent tube with easy to reach valves so I don't have to bend over whenever I need to adjust the airflow, LOL. I have an old drum that I don't really no where it came from. It had been sitting around the shooting range for probably a decade or so. The inside looks clean (no oil residue or liner) except for a thin layer of rust. The paint on the outside is all faded but other than the barrel and lid are in good shape. I'm thinking if I just burn it really good to burn off the outer paint it should also burn off anything inside. Then do a few hot practice runs before cooking with it just to ensure it's seasoned well. I am trying to find a food grade barrel to, but the closest used ones are a 3 hr trip. I'd probably spend $50 or $60 in gas just to get a $25 used drum.
