@@Y.Tokugawa 👍👍👍
Sorry, my wife walked in during your sprint and only heard you hyperventilating…she yelled, what the heck are you watching??? LMAO!!!
@@darrencarlton7517 hahahaha I hope you said "I'm his OnlyFan!"
Hey James, just a few quick thoughts-I'm still racing in Cat C-D as a sprinter in ZRL: I prefer to use the original screen view. It lets us see other riders around, so we can adjust your power accordingly. If you notice someone chasing you in the last 20 meters, it might give you that extra boost. Focus on your breathing before the final 200 meters. Taking in more oxygen (as much as you can) right before you hit that sprint can really help you maintain your power. yeah we talk about holding power for another seconds in sprint :) Good luck for your next race!
@@Aiden.K thanks for the advice! I take in a lot of oxygen since my mouth is so big 😂. I assume the people are on my tail and give myself no reason to let up but you may be right. I've sprinted in both views and there are pros and cons to each.
Nice one! I can really feel the pain in the last 2min
@@minghaozhang5181 super pain... The wheezing at the end was the final tell 😆
That was awesome James
@@thespartanbishop you're awesome! 😎 Haha thanks 👍
btw-what do you think is optimal time for alternating pulls?
@@daletocemd4781 on Zwift? I don't know... Hahaha
@@jameskim3 when I did WTRL on a team of 5, we all did 30 sec pulls at our own threshold pace--most of us had similar ftp's (I was the weakest link...sadly)
anyway, that's what I do when i'm alternating with someone taking pulls-and true-no steering in that situation...I've angered a few doing that also-
@daletocemd4781 30 sec sounds reasonable. I don't know long the event was but don't you think you could have managed like 110% ftp (maybe more?) on the front for 30 seconds if you are getting about 1m30sec (assuming ramping watts to get on the back isn't really a recovery) recovery each rotation?
@@jameskim3 the races were like 45-55 minutes and threshold is ~1.06...vo2max is 120, so I was doing threshold efforts; our team was often missing a guy so we would be rotating 4 but had to finish 3
Don't steer on descends. Better for the avatar to follow others.
@@PedroPrego Okie. Only steer when not in a draft. Got it.
who doesn't love Nick Cage? gotta remember to stick with the group AT ALL COST super enjoyable video---keep up the great work
Haha such a good movie. Seen it like 50x 😂. Thank you! Will keep making videos as the year goes on 👍
good job James-I like when you change your expression in the final minutes...going into 'bike racer mode'---and change camera view...you just like seeing the open road and no wheels in front of you-haha... terrific podium! still with the explosive sprint (which I think was still a bit early-better timing, but not quite perfect)
@@daletocemd4781 I agree I hit the wind a little too soon. This is also why I like having the draft boost vs the helmet. Can activate it from 0.7km to go and not worry about it and then it forces me to time it where I am in the slipstream and I end up timing it better in general. At least that's the perception haha
@@jameskim3 still very very close to perfect-tho
@daletocemd4781 I would've been punished for that timing on another day maybe so yeah, can learn from it and just be thankful for this one lol
Jim, what tool did you use for the race overview? I would love to add that to my videos.
@@PJ_Cycles are you talking about the course overview? I screen recorded the Zwift insider website map for the course. If that's not it, lmk what you mean!
@@jameskim3 That is what I was referring to, thanks!
Carla was the prom queen. My Boi Ian doing you DIRTY, luv to see it. He's brand new to cycling, give em a break. Actually no, he doesnt know what he's doing hahaha. I was DS'ing him on a race recently and he kept steering out of the draft, to cut the corners. I was like "nooooo stahp it"
Hey guys! Haha, I’m definitely new to cycling and Zwift so sorry about that. Honestly I was just trying to cut the tangent to catch back up to the group. I promise it was not in at attempt to drop you!
@@joshvillen hahaha. I saw him in another race. Strong guy! I'm not hating on him at all. In the moment I was suffering and I was upset that I didn't get that extra like 40w of draft 😅😅
@@iannurse9651 hahaha it's all good! Would be all good even if it was intentional, man! It's all in good fun. Hope to race with you again some time. You're a strong rider 👊
I’d say a little too far forward at the start with not enough entry speed, so you were in the wind for a long time. Only won because you had stronger sprint than anyone else. As I’ve said before, though, your 1-2 minute power is going to keep winning you a lot of Zwift races, as you have another final kick when most riders are running on fumes
@@davidhofmayer1031 agreed about going a little too early. If I had to choose between too early and too late, I'd choose too early though hahaha. Perfect timing would always be the best tho lol
Wow that ending was impressive James 😮

Very good content James! Really enjoy your videos, they’re a lot better than mine 😂
@CycleWithMatts haha thanks. No one is comparing! But if we are... Your fitness is better than mine 😂
@ how 😅 I think your power is higher than mine as 3.6 for 1 hour 40 is going all out for me and doing 3.9 for 20 min is tough stuff!
@CycleWithMatts well, I think you're lighter than me? Also have youth on your side haha. You'll grow into a beast!
@ I weigh 60kg so yeah about 10kg I think? I really hope I can grow into a beast 😆
Brutal! Seeing you on camera makes it even more brutal🤣🤣
@@Bourne90 I'm sad you didn't gag as much as me 😂
@ next weekend I am ready to face you again👀
Smooth moving through the group and use of the aero. Going to give this stage a crack tomorrow finally. I'll try to implement this tactic and see how i fare. Nice finish!
Thanks! My goal in this one was "sit in, then keep on the power and don't lose momentum in the final km". Gotta preach it to yourself in your head while it is burning. Or say it out loud like I do sometimes if you have to!
Good luck tomorrow!
@jameskim3 yessir "don't chase don't chase don't chase why did I chase that?!" = me, invariably. These flat races rarely break up really bad, but you can break yourself not conserving energy
If you are in a position where you have ample power to hang with a break, then go for it but be selective ie only follow a move once the third rider goes and follow him if it's near the back half of the race. Honestly, the best chance you will have consistently is to just follow the pack, esp cuz it's a flat course
@J.P.1. you can play the finish how you want to but if you don't have a good sprint but also don't have good long range attack power then you need to rely more on positioning and timing. The more you conserve, the more you'll have stored up to unleash at the end
"winners go home and f the promqueen" from The Rock? :D
24:36 Who's the Wolf Man? 😂

@STAR.RIDING thank you! 🙏
Pure entertainment James! Enjoyed the lighter moments: done dirty by DIRT, “Please steer less” and the movie quote. The finish was grit personified.
@@SilverCometCycling haha thanks! Yeah some fun moments during that race. When I watched back that finish for the first time I got a little emotional hahahaha 😂. But yeah, definitely 100% effort there lol
Hey bro, try taking some baking soda before the races. On the trainer doing this high intensity it helps a ton.
@@JNorth87 nah, me personally, I won't try it. The amount needed to benefit you is large and I'd rather not vomit before the race lol. If it helps you, great though! The alternative sodium bicarbonate options I've never tried either, but again, probably marginal gains. If my life or salary depends on it, sure, I may try something like that just to experiment but I'd rather just train solidly and take care of all the other low hanging fruit/marginal gains I can get. That's just me though!
What makes these videos enjoyable, James ... is your facial expressions and keyboard skills!! Do you pick the music that matches the moment where it looks like you're the DJ mixing at the club??!! 22:32 🤣🤣🤣
@@phil_d hahahaha I put a bit of thought into the music and the way it plays to the scene, so I'm glad it conveys decently well. My facial expressions are uncontrollable 😂😂
Great finish ! Awesome 🤩 good , nearly perfect job! 😉 Wish I had done the same today … raced the course in the 330-450 group … quite the same 20 min and 5 min W/kg like you , but my race tactics had been terribly poor 😂 Joined a break out in the middle of the race , because I was bored 🙈🙈 stupid me… had been catched and at the finish there was nothing left in the tank … reached 5. Place … so, a lot to learn for me . And for this , really enjoying your videos and great commentary! It really helps me (realising what I am doing wrong 😂) Greetings from Germany
@@lb3764 I'm glad you are getting something out of the videos! All of these race tactics things don't go very well a lot of the time haha. Always things to tweak and learn. Get your reps in and stay locked in and I'm sure you will do well! I like to keep a very simple plan going into the race. If that has to change then it does, but play the probabilities 👊

@rab0309 dude. GAMECHANGER!
I’d strongly recommed uninstalling McAfee. It’s more of a virus than an antivirus on your computer at this point. If you really want, there are some alternatives, but Windows defender is on the level of many antivirus programs. You can get a bunch more performance out of the computer if there arent as many intrusive and resouce heavy programs running. :D Anyways, I have really been enjoying these videos where you speak your mind and explain your tactics!
Great power numbers on second race James! >4w/kg should promote you up to Category A which is amazing, getting there is my ambition over the next couple of months, currently at 3.7w/kg. Great to see how you have been progressing over the prior few months and demonstrates that if you put in the hours and effort you can achieve good things!
@@AnthonyUrch-j6g thanks! I surprised myself. I knew I am at my best fitness yet but still, that was surprising haha. Couple things. 1) consistency wins in cycling training! 2) I just busted through a plateau that was contending with for 1.5-2 years haha. So def feels good to be at new heights! Good luck with your training! I'm sure you can get to 4wkg! If you don't have anyone to chat with regarding your training, I'm down to chat about it. Find me on Strava if that's what you wanna do 👊

@drewbuffington I hope you get back to peak fitness! The flu sucks! I'll be awaiting your return 👍👑
Always a good day when James uploads a video 👌😂 Blue cleats here, too. I have a dodgy knee from weight training a few years back which can pop out, so I like to keep the knee facing forward as much as possible. I've found it the best position for cranking up the sprints!
@@phil_d interesting! I'm doing zone 2 right now and it does feel a little more locked in but my knees don't mind because I think I have a relatively aligned pedaling motion. It'll be interesting to try them outside and corner hard with the smaller amount of play in the pedals. Maybe it won't feel any different but I'm curious
@@jameskim3 I think if you have a very good fit on the bike, it's nice to have your feet just so. I have fixed or blues on my road bike, more float on the commuter/gravel.

I dont care what anyone says, zwift racing is the best training out there.
@@JNorth87 haha I wouldn't say that 😆. Still need a solid base via zone 2 training and structured workouts help a bunch too. I will say that Zwift racing has provided a different type of stimulus for me that I don't normally do in my structured training which has probably helped spur some adaptation but too much of one thing isn't good, no matter how good that one thing is 😉

Very interesting self reflection. I have done the same where I have snapped a little early only to find that I need a quick micro break and lose the momentum. That’s frustrating when you’ve got the pack charging up from behind.
@@darrencarlton7517 haha yeah. 5 seconds of no pedaling near the finish line won't get you any good placing 😂. In a way, this is the beauty of racing! I'm not going to say I'm some pro, nor will I say that I am some beginner and don't know what I'm doing haha. However, even in outdoor races, I am sometimes able to keep up with others who have a way higher ftp than mine simply through drafting and other tactics. And this also doesn't account for other attributes aside from ftp etc. For instance, my durability, repeatability, stamina have all increased significantly in the past year, despite having virtually the same FTP number all year. And I don't know how often you race or how much you weigh etc, so I can only imagine that you are just being generous in your comment 😄. This is my long-winded response, but either way, RIDE ON, DUDE! 🫡😁
@ I didn’t mean any harm if you thought so hahaha I just thought it was funny 😅 We should race sometime! Though preferably mountains for me as I’m 60kg hahahaha Ride on!!!
@CycleWithMatts hahaha no harm at all and I didn't take it badly at all. If anything, it sounded like you were putting yourself down 👎. What's your Zwift name? Follow me if you aren't and we will race one day, I'm sure. Although, I am not a good climber 😂. I'm sure of that...
@ CyclewithMatts is my Zwift name like my UA-cam name 😄 We’ve got very similar heart rate stats aswel which is cool to see In ZRL the other day I averaged 190 for 49 minutes lol 😅
@CycleWithMatts daaaaaamn 😂
Dude, 3 back to back sounds brutal. Great work

@@thespartanbishop lol thanks 👍. This ain't nothing compared to you. I do 3 in a day. You do like 300 in a year 😂😂😂
@@thespartanbishop did I just underestimate? 😂
Excellent tactical commentary, James. I love that someone else refers to this as the Douche. Great results and nice progress with the ZRS. Fun finish on race 2. I'm of the opinion that steering should be used to find draft, not deprive others of it. Great perseverance. By the way if I could frame a single YT Zwift quote it would be your "Momentum wins"
@@stevej_on_a_mtb haha thanks! That's a very kind view of steering you have! Good man! 👊😄. Momentum wins for sure! The difference in carrying your momentum by staying on the power, for instance, in a sprint, is huge. I've been finding that any break in putting down the power costs way more than just that reduction of power
