    I’m throwing a party for about 50 people with various activities, one of which is a puzzle hunt. Because of the various activities and people involved, I’m not sure exactly how many people will be actually doing the hunt. Do you have any tips for organizing a large group like that for the puzzle hunt portion, in the possibility that EVERYONE AND THEIR MOM wants to play and arrives perfectly at the same time? The puzzle hunt itself is very linear with a final code being solved with physical pieces picked up along the way from other puzzle locations. Most escape rooms I’ve done have around 4-10 people so I was considering breaking everyone down into groups of max 10 and somehow staggering every group’s starting time with the rule to return each puzzle how they found it so the next group can enjoy it. (Planning on having at least 1 copy of each puzzle in case something gets lost/broken) I am not sure how to estimate how long the hunt/each puzzle would take for each group since I obviously know the answers already. So I’m not sure if I should plan to have each group fully do the hunt, stalling other groups with other party activities while they wait, and compare end times for ranking. That sounds disgustingly long to me. So I’m wondering if I could stagger start times so subsequent groups start playing after a brief head start from the previous group. How would I navigate possible traffic jams or clever teams passing each other? Also, with such a large group, how can I make sure everyone has fun and can participate if they want? In escape rooms I’ve done, I know some people do nothing and some people really wanna solo everything. How do I balance HOW players work together? Make each team have a captain to look out for each other?

    • @HoshiHikari
      @HoshiHikari 20 днів тому

      To figure out the order to stagger teams (and break the ice for groups with a mix of members they may not know), I was considering a mini competition to compile items/do tasks from a list within a time limit. The groups would start the puzzle hunt in order of how much they completed the list. Now I’m wondering if those tasks could be better suited for something to stall any waiting teams somehow.

    • @HoshiHikari
      @HoshiHikari 20 днів тому

      The puzzle hunt itself is partly on location with various hidden deaddrops and partly online with a Google form for some puzzles. I am hoping I don’t need any confederates for this and people can just come to me for hints for each numbered puzzle if they need any.

      Hey there! It sounds like you have a lot going on. On it's face, my recommendation is to make the hunt open ended instead of linear. If needed, I also consult and would love to hop on a phone call!

    I made a scavenger hunt for an unknown number of children of various ages and wanted to keep it at around 4 hours once. I ended up designing all the puzzles to be very difficult with extreme shortcuts. Sudokus where you can get away with just solving one line, a multiple choice series of riddles where you can probably look at the multiple choices and pick the ones that spell a word, etc. There ended up just being one clever kid show up and it took almost exactly four hours with very gentle nudges that let him still feel like he had outsmarted the whole thing.

    Great Puzzle and as always, great tutorial. I have recently been watching videos on the Jejune Institute and the Latitude Society. It is basically a very detailed scavenger hunt but the creator calls the adventures "Urban Playground Movements" or "Alternate Reality Games." I don't think I have ever seen such detailed and immersive scavenger hunts. I was just wondering if you have ever created a scavenger hunt like those? They seem to be very similar to the movie "The Game" with Sean Penn.

    • @ConstructedAdventures
      @ConstructedAdventures 4 місяці тому

      Oh yeah! Big fan of ARGS. Me and my team have helped with a few. I like to say that what I do is like the Game, scaled back, not creepy. In truth, something like "The Game" is only possible because it was scripted in a movie. That said, I love diving into people's lives and creating a day that revolves around them.

    • @ConstructedAdventures
      @ConstructedAdventures 4 місяці тому

      you could always be clear on the first step (Fold back) However, as I was testing this, when someone folded wrong, they could still see the message, just upside down. The competitive ones would just figure it out upside down and everyone else would just re fold it the only other way to reveal the message. Hope that helps!

    I nearly had a family member drive away even though I told them their property lines were the boundaries of the adventure! They thought(correctly) that the clue referred to their favorite diner, but they didn't even consider the diner memorabilia they had displayed in their home before grabbing their keys.

      It's ABSOLUTELY WILD where people's minds can go with clues and instructions! In the beginning, My clues were vague and opaque. At this point I'm MUCH more clear with instructions. I'd rather have my puzzle solve to give the location rather than mask the location and leave it up for interpretation. Hope it turned out great though!

    Great Video. As a fan of scavenger hunts and as a person who has thrown similar hunts over the years, I love it when you post new videos. They are always very instructional and entertaining. I think I have watched all of your videos multiple times and I do not remember you mentioning the use of vellum paper to disclose the final location on the map. Very creative and it is similar to the your black light idea. I do not know if you have incorporated the following idea before in any of your hunts, but I like the concept/gambit of building the map itself during the hunt vis-a-vis a jigsaw puzzle. There are custom jigsaw puzzle websites out there that will let you upload a picture and they will create any size jigsaw puzzle. The idea is that the participants receive parts of the jigsaw puzzle at each location throughout the hunt, and at the second to last location, the participants will recieve the final pieces of the jigsaw puzzle which will obviously fill in the remainder of the map and disclose the final location. Chris, keep up the great work and I always look forward to your videos.
