Debt-Free DIY
United States
Приєднався 23 січ 2021
Hi, we're Jeremy and Jess! In 2016 we sold our completely finished home and bought a fixer upper. About a year later, we decided to stop everything and pay off all of our consumer debt before beginning all the renovations on our list. In 15 months we paid off $34,000 dollars in debt and then began putting back for our emergency fund. Now we're punching our remodel in the face and using cash instead of debt. Follow along as we go room by room through our home tackling everything from DIY to design all without borrowing a penny!

thanks for the comparison.
No problem! Thanks for watching!
Great smoker and I use mine as a grill as well!
For the tools that you're using for hours on end constantly in a more stationary place like in a shop setting, 100% got corded. Use battery tools for mobile jobs and when the tool is only being powered in short bursts to get jobs done. Like drill, short bursts to drive fasteners, battery. Angle grinder, high rpm, constant grinding on surfaces and cutting through steel, yeah, corded.
I'd go with the Kreg jig, I don't plan on doing lots of doors.
HB continues to make great products. I’ve got a 131 and watching this video I have a feeling wont be good for my wallet.
Have you worked with the wifi app? I need to know if you can shut it off completely remotely? Thanks -
I have not. It looked like a very complicated process compared to today's standards so I just haven't messed with it.
And did you pay full price for it??
Ringing in your ears can come from copper toxicity
the thin rip jig. I have one and can't imagine cutting super thin rips any other way. 100x safer.
Totally agree! Thanks for sharing!
When I hear a UA-camr use the term "bad boy" it is time to move along
👋 Adios!
Some great recommendations here. I have some recommendations for improvements on a couple of them that you might be interested in. I think those dedicated trim pullers are a must have if you're removing trim and skirting often. The best one I've found is from Goldblatt which uses a pivoting action so that the first part of the plate stays flat against the wall, spreading pressure, while the second piece moves to separate the trim. For the sanding block, Milescraft make the Sand-It 1622 which has multiple profiles on each edge, but requires a square piece of sandpaper. If you want to make use of hook and loop discs, they also sell what they call a Sandplane 1620 which has interchangeable profile attachments. KWB make the K150 which is essentially the same as the Sandplane.
If you go to the hardware store and ask for a crow bar they will not hand you the tool you have.
Yeah mine's more of a pry bar. I've just always called it a crowbar. Kinda like the miter saw will always be a chop saw to me even though it's not really... 😂
My mom just had to do this in her mobile home for the same reason, now we’re trying to see the best way to replace to cabinet doors or just keep the same ones
great tools, some of which i already have. i like the idea of 3d printing the corner clamps, although i do have a more cumbersome set of them that i had purchased for making frame and canvas stretchers (*still* have not used them....) a friend gifted me an older 3d printer which i have yet to get set up, but the corner clamps are definitely something i would look into making once it is up and running. sadly, life has a way of interfering with my plans for creative endeavors.... as always, i love the content.
Nice list Jeremy. It's getting so close, you should have made a Xmas suggestion list out of this one. I think I've had all of the items for years except the hose clamp. I've made a boom arm for mine. I don't know how many of the headphones I've bought and given away to friends. They're so great. I also 3D printed some of the friction corner clamps. You can find a file that has 2, 3 & 4 way intersections and really cheap to print up a bunch. - Chris
Thanks Chris! That's a great idea on the 3D printing! Maybe I'll make a Christmas list video too... 😂 There's always room for more content!
Great ideas! Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks brother! 👊
I'm replacing my old cabinet doors to a wider width shaker, where the two doors will have a smaller gap when closed and replacing the hinges. The overlay measures 1¾ and I couldn't find that size, so will 1½ work? Also, is a ¼ center panel okay?
How can you caption the video “Home Depot is ripping you off” when they provided the cutting service???
Krag's products are way to expensive for a diy'er in my opinion. I believe they junk
This is what u have to do today d bag
This guy is a dumb person that has no understanding of business. Also "dylan" is on break and doesnt know how to use a tape measure.
I'm sold on HB but torn on which one to get. A question, does the Roughneck do anything the Legacy 131 cannot do?
Here's my take: the 131 is a better "all around grill". That being said the Roughneck is a BETTER smoker. The 131 can smoke but the Roughneck has better airflow control etc and holds smoke better. It's sealed up better etc. But you can't really sear a steak on it. So if you want a jack of all trades the 131 is the better entry into the brand.
Thanks, i was also wondering the differences..@DebtFreeDIY
@@dank9288639 you're welcome!
Agree with Clint! Great instructions.
Thank you!
That's beautiful
Running a flush cut router blade around a pice of plywood costs pennies and works better
Been using the same one for over a year now it works great
Thanks for the info! Good to know it holds up!
Can the wipe on Poly be used to fill a cavity in the wood? I have a piece of cypress with holes that I want to keep.
In that case I would use Epoxy. If the holes aren't very deep you could use CA glue. Either way, fill it, let it dry and then sand flat and you'll be golden.
Question-can you use the standard kreg drill bit for 2" screws? The depth guide doesn't go that far, so I removed the collar and the resulting depth appeared like it would work after doing a test run (had about 1.25" pass through penetration on a 2x3, short side).
I've always wondered if these would cause any issues by sticking up too far. Causing a slight hump at the blade, while by only a small fraction, could throw off a 90° cut. Sometimes when I needed to adjust an angle by a fraction of a degree, I'll put a piece of tape on the fence as a shim. The cut quality difference using these would probably offset any fractional difference anyway. I guess I always made my own ZCI's, after all, we are woodworkers. - Chris
Yes so on my saw it also helps because the factory insert is slightly recessed so I don't notice much issue. This actually probably gets it closer to flush than it was before. 😁
I got a Virutex AU-93 in the mid 80's, $23 bucks now. It looks like your Fastcap one which they must have copied when the Virutex patent ran out. I still use it all the time and just touch up the blades with a small rat tail file. I also have a Plasti-Cut file I use to smooth the sharp corners of the edging.
Chalk paint failed because it was high maintenance ... if you left it unwaxed it felt horrible AND got fingerprint marks. If you waxed it you had to keep waxing it and the wax is not a durable finish.
I've been waiting for this since that foolishness started.
thank you!!! I didnt get the "chalk paint" thing. I did 2 projects, EXACTLY following the manufactures instructions, had to redo both after a year! Too much work.
Very nice video and great review of the Roughneck. I own a Corten steel version that I pre-ordered about two years ago and received in November of 22. It has been my go-to smoker out of the several that I own and has been used a lot over the past two years. Mine came with the cast iron grates which are pretty nice. I did buy the version of grates that yours has when they first came out but have never used them. The RN is very easy to control heat on and is very fuel efficient and has done a great job on all of the cooks that I have done on it. I have the original style heat shield but have never used it. I prefer to use a drip pan on the second level of grates and use that as a heat shield. Hasty Bake makes some great products and accessories, and I have several of their other cookers such as the 131, the 357 Pro, and the Ranger. I recently bought their new pizza oven and use it exclusively in my 131 and making pizzas with it is very easy and it does a great job. Several people in the HB Facebook group recommend the Blackstone flat scraper to clean the RN grates. The blade on it is a little over 6" wide and it's pretty cheap to buy at Walmart.
Thanks for sharing and all of the insight! Greatly appreciated!
Jeremy, you're right, I haven't seen chalk paint in quite a while. I was never a big fan of it anyway, so I haven't really missed it. Good meeting you and Jess the other day. - Chris
It was GREAT meeting you as well! Thanks for saying hi!
Dylan usually messes up the cuts.
Thanks, yeah ZAR and Watco are better. With ZAR you have to mix their brush on poly 50/50 with mineral spirits.
How fatiguing is this on arms and back compared to using a jack hammer?
Jack hammer takes much more strength because it's so heavy. This is a much better option since it's WAY lighter. If you have a ton of tile though a demo hammer is a better option. It sets sizewize about halfway between a rotary hammer drill and a jackhammer. Personally I would only use a jackhammer for breaking up concrete.
Great video plain and simple. I totally agree with your method of remodeling your own home. I'm the same way you are about my home i do what I know And i even have a few good contractor's that does great work at great prices
Shhhhhhteam it and twishhhhhhhht it.
I just finished up building about 20 kitchen base cabinets and used the Accucut on every sheet of plywood. It mostly worked great. As the project progress, the blue cut line on the jig has slowly worn / chipped away. It's still usable, but is now a bit off. This happened on both sides. At the start, I'd use the Accucut to cut exactly where I needed the finish plywood to be. Now, I leave it oversize a tad and finish up on the table saw (if possible). It's great for what it is, but don't expect track saw accuracy for under $100. I's still buy another one.
They don’t do it anymore. They say the saw is broken… guess the person that fixes it also fixes the shake machine at Burger King…
good advice indeed. i did manage to take advantage of a zero% financing on some flooring, and was able to work it into the budget so that i was able to pay everything off before the term ended. i realize not everyone is able to do so, and i was fortunate in that regard, but it was within the budget and allowed me to be able to get all of the flooring for the renovation for the whole house at one shot, which wound up saving me some time as well. just make sure that there is sufficient storage space for the materials if anyone tries to do similarly, we were fortunate enough to have a spare room that we could use for such purpose. but never feel badly about admitting that you need help, or farm out parts of jobs to the professionals. there is no shame in admitting one is in over their head. or,...so i have heard....
Couldn't agree more!
To anyone who hasn't done this...he kind of did this like a magician does a magic trick. When he cut the long board up into pieces...he immediately reduced significantly the twist in the board. It will needed a lot of work but if you rewatch and look how much flatter the shortened board is than the longer board you'll see it. This is why working with shorter boards is SO much easier than having to keep them long (like for a table)
Yes but it would still work for a long board as well. I just didn't feel like making an 8' planer sled 😂
@DebtFreeDIY yes it would work but it would be a LOT harder than doing those short boards
How about go to a local lumberyard and have them do it for nothing? Home depot and lowes are for children
Yeah that's what I do. I normally order in bulk from my local hardwood supplier and have them deliver.
@DebtFreeDIY 🤙
Markup on precut- 300 percent
I like to hear you talk. I'm not the first person to say that. What I don't like is the loud music. Can't UA-camrs listen to their own videos and adjust the volume so that they are the same or at least similar? You are not the only UA-camr that does that. Nearly all of them do it. Some even play the music while they are talking. That is even worse.
Thanks for the input. This was an earlier video for us and like all things we learn more as we go through the journey. For one, listening to music through multiple sources before exporting makes a big difference when editing... Headphones sound different than a phone speaker which sounds different than a laptop. As a musician I naturally want to have the music too loud 😅 but over the last year or so have been trying to be more aware of this. Again I appreciate the input.
boy that square comment hit home. My fiance asked why I was taking so long hanging our microwave. Let me tell you....deciding if I was going to make it parallel to the top of the hole it was going into or parallel with the stove top or parallel to the floor was the hardest. This house is over 60 years, 3 additions. The back 2 bedrooms used to be an outdoor concrete pad so my computer chair always wants to send me to the outside corner of the room....I cant wait to build a house
It's really crazy isn't it? 😂
i bet it wasnt a cheap peice
This is nothing new nor original to HD. 4 quarts of paint costs more than a gallon of paint. A 2 liter of soda costs just slightly more than a 20oz bottle. This is from the manufacturer and not the store. Its their way of encouraging consumers to pay for more than they need.
