RM1X Repair
The display of my old RM1 X was not working anymore and need to be fixed.
I thought i need to replace the display but that was not the case, all it needs was a new capacitor as you see in the movie.
Have fun watching and please subscribe.

On this channel I will show you how I try to repair a few of my favorite Synths. I am not a pro in fixing electronics but I found out that its not that difficult. I hope that with this channel also can help you fix your vintage Synths and maybe I can make you also enthusiastic and give it a try yourself. Love te get comments from you all. Have fun soldering :-)
Awesome video !! Thank you for taking the time to make it. I need to do this on my 01W/fd and 01W/Pro X. Could you please tell me the part numbers and where to order the display foil and tacktile switches ? Thank you !
Do you only solder the screen legs? Or what do you mean by new switches?
Great mod!!! thanks for this. what's holding the ring into the triangle center plate?
Many thanks for this very instructive video. I plan to do exactly the samedi operations on my m1. Could you kindly share where you found the display screen and other parts? Tks
Terrific music in the background ,mute the sound for see the video
You can tell Korg and Yamaha were working closely around then. The way this and the Yamaha synths were constructed were quite similar. Layer upon layer of boards, metal foil etc.
Hello somebody! Where can I get the display with the backlight to buy for the O1W workstation?

Hello Arnold - I am trying to fix my WS EX - it stopped producing soudn after fuzzy audio, it think it';s the D/A converter - can you tell me where is it located?

Love my Rm1x. Still used it to this day. Can't and will never part. Best Machi e 4real
Hey Arnold, I cant thank you enough for your video. I opened the belly of my Korg WS twice already to repair the keyboard. Without your video, I couldnt have made it. It is so well done. THank you so much for that!
Hello where can I buy the LED Display?
Hey, great video! I've been inside my 01/W numerous times to replace broken keys and to lubricate the keys, but I needed to install a new backlight this time. This video was really helpful to tick off the various boards and sections that needed to be removed. I got everything removed, backlight installed, and everything back together and working with no screws remaining! Thanks for doing the work and posting the video.
My rm1x isn’t booting up no lights display only blank screen. Your assistance is very appreciated.
Hello i have a M1 and i replace the battery and i have the same messager in the Screen Low Battery and when i turn off the piano he lost all the sounds
I think the new battery is maybe not good, try another one and its normal you loose the sound and you need to restore them with the factory sounds that you can find on internet and install them with MIDIOX. Hope it will work.
3 jaren later.. scherm doet nog fantastisch.. maar moet echt iets aan de sticky keys gaan doen :P
thanks, you just saved my life :-D a 10 cents repair!!!
Happy that i could help
Hi, I need help!. I connect the display to the wide cable it comes with and it only shows LIGHT, it doesn't give me a character image. Am I doing something wrong? Or do you need to connect other cables? Thank you
ua-cam.com/video/eGtKdmni9p4/v-deo.html
But the ROM bank remains intact when the battery is replaced, right?
Yes don't worry👍
It has been a splendid job... could you tell me what is the value of the new SMD resistor that it replaces?
Interested in trying this, would also consider disabling the invertor on the dc power board since it's not needed for the EL strip anymore, stop that annoying whine too.
Update: I had the exact same issue. I used a high quality Cap replacement of the same value as you demonstrated. Result ... Like new! Many thanks for this "how to" video. The RM1x is seriously under estimated. I use this sequencer in a modern studio enviroment linked to modern kit via midi. At least i can see what I'm doing now.
Thank you for the kind reaction. Glad i coult help👍
The midi capabilities and song editing features of this thing are unique. Definitely interested in buying one
I'm having similar issues, but mine has a dimming display. Could the same cap need replacing or could it be a different section on the board?
Saludos , necesito el display ! Donde puedo encontrarlo ?
Korg t3 and korg 01w almost the same wondefing can both keys fit this light ? Mean t3 ?
Where you get those leds ?
Hi ARK. Which coutry are you based? I've been trying to find a good technician to repair my KM1
Hi i live in Zweden. What is wrong with the Korg?
Are they all 1.5m above the rim or just the center cone?
Good vid. Just make sure you fit the electrolytic capacitor the same way round as the original.
Great job, and tutorial. I've taken all of my Korgs apart many times for fixing, maintenance, swapping things, etc, in the course of over 30 years. But i never bothered to take them apart just because of the LCD backlight. Never bothered me at all. It's a bit harder to read, but not enough for me to merit stripping the whole thing apart just to change it. I admire your persistence 😃
Thank you so much👍
Where can you buy the piezo triggers from
I always love to see someone brave enough to do a full switch and cap change on these synths. Me...? Not as brave (or experienced and precise with a soldering iron). I can take apart (part by part), fix and do maintenance and put back together any late 80's to mid 90's Korg synths with my eyes closed and a hand tied around my back. M1, T3, 01/W, Trinity, Wavestation, etc... De-soldering and soldering components on a circuit board...? Hell no.... Great video.
Thank you so much for your comment.👍
I have a problem with my korg m1, the keys do not work but I have connected it as a module with another keyboard and it does sound but the volume is too low, just like I can play the demo but it sounds very soft. I have also noticed that when I turn on it always starts me at preset 02 and not at 00 as it should be. I hope your help please Thank you
Ahh, capacitor plague. This was an ongoing issue for capacitors from the mid90s to the mid-2000s. It affected huge numbers of computers with early hardware failure and the resulting massive amount of e-waste can't be calculated. I would've replaced all the caps, even the ones that look ok, since caps have a finite lifespan and these ones are probably nearing the end of their lives. Man, I forgot how much electronics have miniaturized. Those PCBs look massive compared to today's. What's with the seizure-inducing flashes at 13:20?
bonjour, ou peut on acheter la feuille pour changer le backlight merci d' avance cordialement
Hi. First, thanks for this video. I’m trying to replace my LED and LCD. The old one has two leads, the one I bought doesn’t. The only cable is the flat ribbon, and I wonder if they still need the others(?) It’s my first time doing this and I’m not ver my handy but decided t give it a try after watching this video. Any thoughts?

Buenas noches, felicidades por el emprendimiento, Quiero uno de esos reparos para mí teclado, dónde lo obtengo
I want to like Alesis but their stuff looks so cheap inside compared to my Roland. And I never have any problems like the stuff you hear from Alesis owners.
Well also i know that Roland Edrums are much better built and sounds better too but i had to stick to mu budget and this was great for the money than. I still ove to play my Alesis drumset in my new studio i build in Sweden where i live now.
Boy, Korg sure had some crappy design engineering back when this was produced. The first thing that's going to go on this keyboard and they make it the hardest thing to get at. I wish they would have designed it so you could get at it from the front without going through all the rigmarole in the back 🙂
La ingeniería de mierda de Korg es demasiada para tipos como tú
It maybe a laborious process, but Korg's design on these synths is anything but "crappy". Other brands are exactly the same for these types of synths. The M1, T series, 01/W series, Wavestation, and Trinity where the pinnacle of Korg's design and built. They are almost virtually indestructible.
@@conan5885 For studio recording only so I just shine a flashlight over the top to find programs 🙂
So..what you ACTUALLY did, was to put the internals from a mid to low end Alesis kit into their High end kit 🤷♂️🙄
The strike pro first gen. is not that high end at all in the first place, it was just a litle test modification to see if it works.😁😁
Seems with the cone added, if you cut the middle piezo out along with the pot (for sensitivity?) you basically have a Roland pd120/100 pad now ?
I need Roland knob pads. What will price of knob pads.
Sorry but i sold the other knob pads last year, i will try to find them for you on the internet and will contact you if i find one ok?
My snare triggers the rim when i hit the center of it sometimes, should i cut the rim piezo and replace it or could it be something else?
When the housing of the snare moves a bit in the snare stand , it can cause a trigger signal aswell !🙄
I had the same problem, turned out one of the center piezo's cables was cut, had to solder it back, those pads are just garbage in terms of build quality
@@Bouccledor idk why but when i found that the snare piezo was broken the rim piezo would activate, it makes no sense
Theres 3 piezos right? One in the top middle, then the yellow wired piezo, then the bottom purple piezo, what does the top middle one with red wires do ?
I was wondering, does the LED backlight ever fade? I've replaced my 01/W's backlight several years ago. Only took about a year for the backlight to fade to nothing, very disappointing project! I'd do it again if I knew the backlight will stay bright and readable.
The led backlight will not fade before 50 000 hours so dont worry it will burn long after the synth die. 😁😁👍👍
@@skywatcherarnoldvanlent4227 Well I just replaced mine! I got the White text on Black background. Luxdisplays on eBay (UK vendor) builds them, no soldering that resistor required at all, it's completely plug&play. You just have to survive completely disassembling the entire 01/Wfd, and also be patient b/c he custom-builds you the display you order - takes 1-2 months.
Thanks for the video. I'd like to try to repair my M1. How can I identify the correct capacitors when I order them?
Great stuff.... thanks for showing the step by step repair... I own one and tried to see why the switches don't work and the bank stays blocked on ram2 though the sounds are there... watching you I figured some of the switches are dead. Any other way of getting them back? Cleaning with air or something alike? cheers
Hi Mauricio, thanks for the nice comment. The only way is to replace the switches, air or contact spray will not help. I hope you manage to make the repair, its not that hard.👍
Good repair, I've a question about my t3, I opened it up to replace the battery now nothing is working no lights come on just some horizontal almost bar like lines on the display. I searched online and multiple other people have the same issue but with the m1 and 01wd where after changing the battery bars light up on the screen and the keyboard is in a frozen state. Changed the caps also just in case they were causing this to no avail.
