Hey Arnold, I cant thank you enough for your video. I opened the belly of my Korg WS twice already to repair the keyboard. Without your video, I couldnt have made it. It is so well done. THank you so much for that!
You know what I started on just an hour ago, before watching or even knowing your video existed? Taking apart my Wavestation EX in order to put in a new screen! No joke!! I stopped after taking out the first board and wondered if there might be a video on youtube of someone switching out their screen... Boom, and there was your video. Uploaded today no less! Amazing timing - thank you! :)
I am glad i coult help you, just have fun repairing your Wavestation. please dont forget to look at your capacitors if they are not swolen and remember to to take pictures from all steps you take of re assamble your Wavestation ok? If you have questions just ask. Happy soldering.
You can tell Korg and Yamaha were working closely around then. The way this and the Yamaha synths were constructed were quite similar. Layer upon layer of boards, metal foil etc.
I own a Wavestation EX and find it hard to program. Even today this synthenzier still sounds good. No one on UA-cam offers this information. Excellent step by step instructions in case I have to repair this synthenzier. You did a good job for your first video, I have yet to do my first video. My favorite synthenzier of all times is the Krog M1 🎹
Thank you verry much for your reply. I have not played the Wavestation much yet and i know its a hard machine to program. But the sounds are from out of this world. I also made a video about repairing the Korg M1 on my channel, i realy love this Synth. too.
Congratulations. This is a great video and, hopefully, it will help me to replace the screen in my Wavestation EX. I've been putting it off for some time due to the fact that the synth has to be virtually completely dismantled. The screen on mine has gone darker and some of the letters are disappearing. I hope replacing the screen will solve this problem. Once again many thanks.
Did you try adjusting the contrast knob in the back of the synth? For me, this fixed the display updating very slowly, and if it's up or down too high letters won't be readable.
@@mikeexits Yes, I tried that first but it didn't make any difference. My main concern, in addition to the darkening of the screen, is the fact that some of the characters have disappeared from the patch names. I'm hoping that a new display will solve both problems. Thanks for your help anyway.
Hello Arnold - I am trying to fix my WS EX - it stopped producing soudn after fuzzy audio, it think it';s the D/A converter - can you tell me where is it located?
I forgot to put it back in, butt i dit put it back in after reassambling the synth and made the movie. I was stupid from me but i solved it afterworth.
@@arnoldsretrokeys189 oh cool thanks for clearing that up haha. thanks for this video! it gives me a little more courage to try this with my own wavestation haha
my korg wont turn on after falling, what could be the problem?i have open the case check the fuse is normal & by looking at the board nothing damage...:'(
Hi, sorry to hear you dropped your Korg. Maybe you can try to see if all connectors on the boards are still fixed, also look if the copper traces on the boards dont have cracks. Is there no light burning at all?? if not there must be aproblem with the powersuply board, be carefull there begouse even with the plug out of your powersocked there is still alot of power in the capasitors on the board. let me know if it helped. Good luck👍
Thanks for this. Currently trying to fix one sticky key, it doesn't move properly and sustain forever, it just physically gets stuck down whenever I press it. I think this helped me, but I don't know how to get into the keyboard itself so I can clean the key I need to with isopropyl alcohol and q-tips. I'll update on how this goes. I fried my $1,000 laptop upgrading the SSD, hopefully my Wavestation EX doesn't suffer the same fate! Update: I did end up fixing it. Hooray! But now I realize my display has barely any backlight at all. I'd repair it but I don't want to touch soldering with a 20 foot pole. Might take it to someone who can.
Just buy a cheep soldering iron and replace the El Foil in the display, DONT TRY TO TAKE OUT THE OLD FOIL, or youwill distroy the display, just slide the new one in front of the old foil and cut the 2 treads from the old foil and solder the two new treads to the display mount. Happy soldering👍
Great stuff.... thanks for showing the step by step repair... I own one and tried to see why the switches don't work and the bank stays blocked on ram2 though the sounds are there... watching you I figured some of the switches are dead. Any other way of getting them back? Cleaning with air or something alike? cheers
Hi Mauricio, thanks for the nice comment. The only way is to replace the switches, air or contact spray will not help. I hope you manage to make the repair, its not that hard.👍
Thanks for this video, it helped me restore my Wavestation. Although i have one problem you may be able to help me with? When I put my keybed back in the unit, the after touch wires came off the keybed. Do you know which way they go back on? There is a red and white wire and 2 connections. Will i damage it if i get the connections wrong? Many thanks in advance. Great video!
I shall make a video about that today for you and place it on my channel, its not that difficult. All you need is a pc and a USB to MIDI cable and the program caled MIDIOX, you can download it here: www.midiox.com/
It take about 3 hours to repair the synth. the noise is completeley gone after you replace the screen, the screen and the switches are from Synth-parts Germany.
I dont think i can give you the link here, i think its forbidden here but if you look at Google for LCD display for korg Germany you will find for shure the the right link. Happy soldering.
Most of the taktile switches on my Wavestation EX don't work. Only 2 of the cursors work, the 5 and 7 button, the jump/mark switch and 1 screen button.🤬 Time for surgery. Where did you get the switches?
Just Google tactile switch 9,5 mm Korg Wavestation and you will find many stores who sell these switches, i dont know where you live but i bought them from Germany, they are cheap. Happy soldering.

I love synth repair videos, but I'd definitely prefer a voiceover. Other than that, very informative. Thanks.
Thank you but I am not that good in speaking English that's the reason that I am doing it in text.
