"11:59" is a short duration composition written for String Orchestra and Grand Piano, set in E minor with a primary meter of 7/8. Techniques such as Bowing (Arco) and Pizzicato are employed, and while the tempo is initially set at 159 bpm, Rubato is permissible.
The piece captures the adrenaline-fueled pace of racing against time, symbolizing the familiar struggle of meeting deadlines before the stroke of midnight. It resonates with the universal experience of grappling with procrastination, yet finding renewed determination to complete tasks as time elapses.
Moreover, on a broader scale, the composition metaphorically embodies the daily challenges of life, where comparisons to others’ achievements may breed discouragement. However, it ultimately underscores the timeless adage that as long as time remains, opportunities for progress persist.
In crafting the piece, we deliberately selected E minor for its evocative qualities and structured the runtime to mirror the tension of a looming deadline. The recurring motif of the 9th underscores the uncertainty of meeting the deadline, while the crescendo of the orchestra symbolizes the escalating pressure as time runs out. The transition to 6/8 signifies the final countdown, culminating in a timely conclusion just before the one-minute mark, capturing the exhilarating sensation of completing a task just in time.
“While Myself and Abraham was away at the International Tuba and Euphonium conference (SCRTEC), the idea came and we decided to just start composing. I’ve been looking to collaborate with him for a while and never got an idea , until I stared at the digital alarm clock and thought about time itself , and from there came 11:59” said Edward
“11:59 was mostly written while at the Tuba Euphonium Conference that was being held in Memphis, Tennessee. We would brainstorm ideas we had for the piece while out at dinner with our tuba euphonium ensemble. Then we would then execute those ideas once we were back in the hotel we were staying at” Said Abraham
