    hello just a few tios to help you on your sailing career. Firstog all your kicker is upsidown the cleat should be at the botton for more purchase. secondlywhen you pull in your mianshet you take it to you knee where the tiller is. that is fine but try use both hands. I am not sure if your tiller extention is long enough for this but is is worth a try. Finaly i would look at phills watersports for more tips on sailing it is a great cheannel keep up the good work.❤❤

    The Gull you have is a great boat, although not a new one, she is an earlier version than mine, which was built 1976. Consequently, she's going to need a bit of maintenance, which will make a world of difference to the way she sails and to your enjoyment of her. Learn how to do the work on her yourself and you'll probably start to enjoy working on her as well as sailing her. - One good thing about an older boat is you can work and maintain them more easily. Like the sound of the plans you have for the channel. I think you're thinking along the right lines. Regards to the two of you, David.

    Hi Dan and Roe. I like your sailing videos, both the Wayfarer and the Gull, particularly the Gull as late in the season last year I became the owner of a Gull too, albeit a slightly different version to yours. Like yourselves, I'm fairly new to sailing, so have much to learn, you two sharing your experiences and asking for comments on others similar experiences is a great way for us all to learn. I'm sorry to hear that your channel has taken a bit of a hit in popularity, it certainly hasn't done so with myself. It did surprise me to hear Dan say about the numbers dropping off. The other weekend, where I sail and keep my boat (Mudieford Quay, Christchurch), I was chatting to someone in the dinghy park, and when I mentioned I sailed a Gull, that told me how they had been watching your channel. Not an isolated incident, over the months I've had a few people say they have watched some of your videos. - I always tell them to, like the videos, subscribe to see more, post a comment even if it's just to say 'Hi', as all these things help with the UA-cam algorithm. What would I personally like to see more of, the sailing and boat related things. Liked the one about how you rigged your boat, also when you took your Gull to the sailing school. I think there's so many more along those lines you could do, for example, you've got a slight problem with water entering your front buoyancy tank, perhaps lets see how you're going to find the leak, then lets see how you fix it, what products you use and so on. Regards to you both, and don't give up on the channel. David.

    Grip the rivet slightly further up the shank, this will allow you to get a better grip on the rivet gun and close the handles up a bit to start the rivet, then carry on as normal with the gun to pull the rivet through. There's nothing wrong with that rivet gun, you're just not doing it very well. Hope this helps for next time as I'm about 3 months too late with this information. 👍

    I love watching you learning, you are a great couple. May I offer some advice, when you are gybing, pull the main sheet in a few hand fulls and you just have to practice swapping sides.. If you do the same in higher winds, you will capsize. Although your boat is quite stable. My laser will 100% throw you out in such manoeuvres if you dont be more aware. But take in a few handfulls of sheet and take a firmer grip on it, it will really snap over in higher winds.

    Love the idea of improving your tacking! Try not to anticipate the boom coming across - don't move from your side of the boat until the boom thwacks over. The leeward side of the boat will rise up alarmingly in front of you, your bum will seem to be about to dip in the lake, but you can then stand up, step uphill to the (now) windward side of the boat and, as you do so the boat will (should!) come back onto an even keel. That way you don't spend an eternity grovelling in the bottom of the boat, sails flapping, waiting for the tack to complete. Try sitting out more - you can sit on opposite sides to balance the boat, giving you both more room and better visibility.

  • @paulincumbria
    @paulincumbria 5 місяців тому

    Re. Lying to, get someone to show you how to heave to. Totally calm and in control, boom out of your way, you can not only swap places but have a cuppa and a sandwich - great skill to have!

  • @paulincumbria

    As soon as you're ready, sell the Gull and invest the money in the Wayfarer. You're the perfect size and weight for it, its size on your lake will just push you to gybe and tack more, improving your boat handling. Get some fresher (secondhand) sails from a racer (they're forever replacing sails, so will sell off sails in great condition), get a local sailmaker to add two sets of reefs and the necessary hardware on your boat. Get a furling jib set up. Get a properly balanced combi trailer! And then start dinghy cruising. Wayfarers are great for cruising, and they're popular so hold their value well. If you set her up right you'll get a good return on your investment should you sell. And they're big, powerful rigs - Wayfarers ARE fast! Not modern race boat fast, but plenty exciting enough for you. And read Roger Barnes's book and watch his videos for inspiration. Good luck!

    So glad you enjoyed Glenridding! We started learning to sail at Glenridding Sailing Centre (over 20 years ago). We loved it so much we promptly moved up to the Lakes (Kendal) from a lifetime in London, and it changed our lives!

    Just watched a few of your videos - love them! (So I've subscribed, of course). We didn't start sailing till our forties (20 years ago), so I still remember being where you are now. My top tips? 1. Don't buy a boat! When you begin, EVERY boat you sail feels wonderful, but you've not a clue what is right for you (you do touch on this). Join a club, sail lots of different boats and let that money burn a hole in your pocket until you really HAVE to buy something. (This tip would make for rubbish videos, mind!) 2. Find a good instructor, and spend all your money on tuition instead. You'll see lots of sailors who've just done a weekend course and then taught themselves a ton of bad habits - don't do this! Instructors fall into two camps: they're either great sailors or great instructors. Very rarely you'll find someone who's brilliant at both - spend your money with them! 3. Race. Buying a boat that is raced at your local club, then copying other sailors as they sail away from you in identical boats and identical conditions is brilliant (free) tuition. And the people who beat you will be only too happy to explain where you're getting it wrong...

    Re; the rivet gun. See if you can find out who the boat boson is at your club and ask him. He will have a decent rivet gun that you can borrow.👍

    Many years ago I did a sailing course at Mylor Sailing school near Falmouth. Boats and instructors were amazing so a safe and exciting way to improve sea sailing skills. Obviously I don't know what it's like now but it's still there unlike most sailing schools I went to!

      Fantastic, thanks for sharing that. It’s worth knowing a place like that, it could come in handy… ⛵️
