I'm not sure if this is the right video but... You asked about the aide memoirs for the colours for port and starboard. My mother used to say "No red port left". That gives it all!

Quick tip, you may like to use it! Tiller looks about the right length although it will feel really long if you sit close to the stern, bringing yourself forward in the boat almost entirely eliminates the problem and don't be afraid to hold the tiller extension! Obviously it's your boat and your preference but keeping the tiller long will make it easier to steer the boat especially when it gets windy where weather helm becomes greater. I love following your journey to learning to sail and can't wait to see what happens next!

Tips are most welcome 👍 thank you, it’s really helpful to hear from experienced sailors about these things!
We will be playing about with where we are sat in the boat over the next few weeks. Thanks for the support!

Re the tiller, the extension is the right length, particularly if you're sailing single-handed. The dinghy looks like it was rigged for that. I've been after a Gull for ages. Enjoying watching your adventures.😁👍

Thanks for the comment, glad to hear you are enjoying our adventures!
Yes, we have since discovered how to use the tiller correctly and realised as you say, the length is correct! 👍

I’ve just learned to sail this Summer, and I’m learning on a Gull that I’m allowed to borrow. I’m loving learning, by making lots of mistakes

That sounds fantastic! It’s brilliant you are able to borrow a Gull as well, ENJOY!!

Check the status of your centerboard! To go up wind, centerboard should be fully down. Otherwise you drift aside into some nasty static buoys not jumping out of the way. I very much like your attempts! ❤

Thank you! Yes, getting to learn all about the centre board, is very interesting!! Thanks for leaving us a comment and for watching. 🙏

Centre main is so much better than aft main for a whole host of reasons. The reason why you are finding it getting in my the way, and the tiller being too long etc is largely down to technique which you will perfect as you practice and gain experience.
Just to say, If you ever convert back to centre main, one thing you might want to just sort out is the main sheet that is dangling between the two blocks running along the length of the boom. You would want to get yourself a sleeve that the main sheet can run through to stop this dangling effect. The dangling main is quite dangerous, as in, if you were to capsize and your head went between the main sheet and the boom and the boat inverted, that mainsheet will pull tight against the boom and against your neck holding you underwater. It’s happened to me once in an RS 200. If you look at other boats at the club, you will see that they have sleeves on their booms.

Thank you for taking the time to write your comment, that’s really helpful. We would like to become competent with aft and centre main so it’s really useful to know about the sleeve, thank you! 👍

Nice adjustment to the tiller. it's good to see you learning rather than channels where they just suddenly and miraculously know how to sail round the world! I am sure the Lake District will be fantastic, looking forward to the videos.

The winds were too strong (for us) when we got to the lake yesterday! It’s looking very good for tomorrow though so fingers crossed!

Great video, thank you. I think you would find a burgee mounted atop the mast will be easier for judging wind/apparent wind direction, rather than ribbons on the shrouds. Also, you will be glad of the length of that tiller once you start sailing in stronger winds and need to hike out on the boat's gunwales. And, as someone has said, perhaps sit further forward in the boat, esp when beating into the wind, and I think you'll find the tiller length is fine. Don't be tempted to cut it down!
All the best, look forward to more videos.

Thanks for your comment and for your helpful pointers, glad you enjoyed the video. We have since mounted a hawk on top of the mast and received more tuition around the use of the tiller so we are starting to get our heads around it now and managed to avoid shortening it!
Our position in the boat is an ongoing experiment! 😀
