Moving The Goods Near and Far - Byford Model Railway
Here we see the contrast in the way British Rail dealt with goods traffic.
The first part shows The Scotch Goods a daily service run between Kings Cross and Scotland comprising fully fitted wagons that were run at near express train speeds.
Then we see a local Parcels Van service which could also pick up the odd parcel wagon as it went about it's daily duties.

Moving The Goods - Old and New Byford Model Railway
Переглядів 1,9 тис.2 місяці тому
Moving goods on the railway had traditionally been a slow labourious process but in 1959 one of the first attempts to modernise this work was made with the introduction of the Condor Express freight service. This was a non-stop train running between Glasgow and London comprising of 27 preloaded container conflat wagons.
Improving the HM 7000 Sound Decoder ! - Byford Model Railway
Переглядів 3693 місяці тому
I recently installed Hornby's new W1 sound file to fit in my Loco. Wanting to get the best possible sound from it I tried different speakers for comparison. The results are shown on the video but the best improvement in performance turned out to be the fitting of a Hornby Power Bank which gave outstanding low speed running qualities.
Making Waves in The Harbour - Byford Model Railway
Переглядів 2064 місяці тому
This was an attempt to portray water movement in the Harbour rather than just leaving a flat calm effect. It turned out a bit more of an effect than I wanted but it's there now and a lesson for the future. Is it acceptable is it too much, what do you think?
Lets go Tunneling

The second board of the Narrow Gauge layout has now had the track laid with points fitted and working. So, after fitting it in place the first step was to build and landscape the entry point which is through a Tunnel Mouth and here is a short video showing how it was done.
This Diesel needs some Tender Assistance. - Byford Model Railway
Переглядів 9417 місяців тому
When powerful Diesels were developed in the early 1960s that were able to haul the same loads as Steam Engines, but there was one problem, due to their lighter weight and small wheels they didn't have the same braking power especially on unfitted goods trains. To overcome this Brake Tenders were developed which were generally cut down carriage chassis filled with extra weight and thereby provid...
Hornby Hm 7000 Decoder Will it go or Will it Blow - Byford Model Railway
Переглядів 6909 місяців тому
The Hornby HM 7000 decoder system seems to have had some initial teething troubles but once these had been overcome it is now turning into a very cost effective way of installing quality sound on your locos. Plus, with the Bluetooth function you have the advantage of full function control from any suitable device. In this video I wanted to see how it performed on different locos so I downloaded...
Gresley's Great Locos With Original Sounds- Byford Model Railway

In this video we take a look at two of Sir Nigel Gresley's finest engines the A3 and the superb A4 both filmed to the accompaniment of genuine 50 sound recordings courtesy of Transacord. But first we start with the unique one off W1 class which was an attempt to make powerful conventional Steam Loco from the failed experimental Hush-Hush loco with a water tube boiler
Planting the Allotment - Byford Model Railway
Переглядів 35411 місяців тому
There was an odd- shaped corner to fill on the layout so an Allotment seemed an ideal use for it. Allotments were plots of land rented out to people mainly to grow their own fruit and vegetables I'm not sure if they were used everywhere but in the North of England they were very popular. I spent a few afternoons at my uncles waiting for his pigeons to return with the added bonus that it was alo...

My Scenery Looks ???? - Byford Narrow Gauge 5

I wanted to create a different landscape on this layout with an low undulating rocky surface and not much level ground. So, in order to try and achieve this I used a different material from usual, a coloured crack filler available in my local DIY store.
Hornby A4 versus Duchess Trials - Byford Model Raiway

This video recreates one of the LMS Region interchange trials on the West Coast Mainline where a Gresley A4 (Lord Faringdon) was used to haul the Royal Scot express. The idea was to compare performances and design features in readiness for the new standardized BR range of locos that were to be built.

good stuff my late father spent some time in the goods link at 52b working on v2/k3/b16/9f locosonce the diesles arrived a1/a2/a3/a4 got put on this work
Hi, Thanks for your comments and glad you liked the video. Richard
What a fantastic layout!
I'm glad you enjoyed it, thank you very much for your comment.
A truly excellent layout. It's great to see it on YT. The rearrangement of the lamps on the front of the V2 made me smile. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for that, glad you enjoyed it. Well done for spotting the lamps I didn't until it arrived in the Station with Express Passenger code lamps and had a quick change. Richard
@byfordmodelrailway786 Thanks for the reply. I am not, in any way shape or form, a rivet counter: I'm a Rule 1 supporter, 100%, and if you hadn't made the change, I wouldn't have mentioned the lamps, but enjoyed the video nonetheless. But when I noticed the quick change, I thought I'd mention it & hoped it would make you smile, which it did me 😃
Fantastic, thanks for sharing. Dave
Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed it, Richard
Absolutely awesome. Great work. Hi from NZ, Bernie
Thank you for comments, it's much appreciated all the way from NZ. Richard
Very well done and enjoyable , great layout, all the best Hollpoll
Thanks very much for your comments, glad you liked it. Richard
What an amazing layout very impressive nicely done ✅😊
Thanks very much I'm glad you enjoyed it. Richard
This is so immersive! What adds to the immersion besides the awesome layout, the buildings, the landscaping etc. is the lighting in the room, which perfectly matches the somewhat gloomy atmosphere on the photographic wallpaper. Something which is not considered most of the times. Or let's say it the other way round, the wallpaper is perfectly chosen for an indoor railway.
Thanks for that, I'm glad you liked it, I do tend to play around with the layout a lot, tweaking and altering things when they don't look quite right or when a new product becomes available. Richard
Your layout is awesome,I aspire to have something like that, one day,in my dreams lol
Thanks for your comments, you never know what you can do till you try just give it a go it's a very rewarding hobby. Richard
good vido just how i remeber the transition era
Thanks very much for that comment, it's appreciated. Richard
Cant hear your voice mate very difficult to understand
Great looking and sounding locomotive. Thanks for sharing. Dave
Thank you , glad you enjoyed it. Richard😄
I think the sound file needs adjusting. The rebuilt W1 had three cylinders so you should be getting three chuffs per wheel revolution. You are actually getting half that.
Hi, you may be right but the sound file is downloaded complete from Hornby to match a particular loco in this case a W1 File and I don't think that there is any way that you can adjust them. Someone with more technical skill might know otherwise but it's beyond my ability so I just leave things alone and accept it. Richard
Understood. I think it is high time that Hornby got these things right, @@byfordmodelrailway786
nice one great layout look forward to seeing some more action
Thanks glad you enjoyed it. Richard
Nice work, looks very promising. Couplings?
Thank You, The body shell has 2 little coupling mouldings built into it so I left these in place to see how they would perform. Most of my stock has the Bachmann-Peco type couplings fitted and I found that these work perfectly well with the Loco as they just rise up the little ramp and latch on themselves automatically.Richard
Looks fab! Nice layout too!
Thank you, that's a nice complement coming from the experts
No worries! I'll let tthe team know! ☺👍 Is your layout portable by any chance?
@@glynvalleytramwaytrustSorry no, not at the moment as I live in Spain but I if we ever return to the UK it will be coming with me so you never know . Cheers Richard😄
Spain you say?.... Maybe we should try to come and visit there!! 😂Well let us know if you do come over here, and maybe we can sort something out. 😉Thanks!
Very interesting video 👍
Thank you , I'm glad you enjoyed it. Richard
Adorable
Great layout 👌
Thanks
Great video. Just discovered your channel. Merry Christmas from NZ
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Merry Christmas to you also, I should imagine it is pretty warm in NZ now, we moved to Spain 20 years ago for the better weather but it still gets quite cold here in Winter.
Thanks for making this informative video. Being interested in this era, but not having been there, I love straightforward explanations of bygone ways of working like this.
Thank you I'm glad you liked it. It was a learning curve for me also as I didn't know too much about Brake Tenders before researching them to make this video. Richard
Hi, could I ask you the origins of the two buildings I assume are loco crew 'rest' rooms. The white timber one near to the Coaling Tower seen at 1:35 and the brick one near to the Water Tower seen at 1:55 - thanks
Hi, They were both installed a few years ago now so I am not sure if they are still available. The first building is a loco crew shed from either the Bachmann Scenecraft or Hornby Skaledale range, the second one is a kit from a company called Townstreet who mainly sell online, I think it is still available and I added working lights and some signage to that one. Richard
greatvideo i rember dbt in the 60s at newcastle central the most common pairing was a class37 pushing are pulling class24/25 and clayton class17 could be seen with dbts
Hi, Thanks for that, I don't actually remember seeing these units running in our area at the time but I have seen old films of them in use. So, when this model was re-released recently I thought it would be a nice addition to the layout and enable me to run some different trains. Thanks to your information I can now correctly pair it up with some different locos. Richard
Very nice layout.
Thanks a lot, glad you liked it. Richard
That is one stunning 9F.
Hi can I ask how easy is it to convert the kato 11-109 chassis to dcc I can't seem to find a tutorial to do it your help would be grateful received as I have the same loco kit to build and would like to run it on a dcc layout Thanks for any help
Hi The wiring connections are fairly easy I used a small 8pin decoder, cut the plug and the spare wires away from it so you are just left with the 4 wires you need coming from it, ie 2 to the motor and 2 to the track. Connecting them up was more difficult because everything is so small, the chassis is like the old Bachmann split chassis with a left and a right half separately isolated. The wires from the motor go to 2 bronze contact strips, one on each half, so I de soldered and removed these contacts and then the wires now coming from the motor now go to the decoder and the track connections from the decoder are wired directly one to each half of the chassis. I think if I do another one I would I would try and keep the bronze contacts in place and solder directly to them as you need to generate a lot of heat when soldering direct to the chassis which could possibly damage some components although in my case everything worked fine. You also need to use shrink wrap cable over all the solder connections to prevent any shorts when you put the chassis back in the Loco. Regards, Richard
@byfordmodelrailway786 Thank you, Richard, for the information I've three of them to do and didn't even know where to start, I have been away from the hobby for a number of years and now it's so much easier than back in the day of white metal kits and n chassis I've heard good reviews of the kato 11-109 chassis, but I'd no clue how to fit a decoder you've helped enormously Mark
great stuff is that the daily york to bournmouth the v2 is hauling
Thank you, glad you liked it, No I didn't even know there was such a journey direct, it must have taken some time 😶🌫. Richard
thanks i think theychanged locos at liecestre gc and banbury are oxford look forward to morerunning sessions
thank you
great video my late father held thegresely loco s in high regard his favorite was the v2
Thanks for that, yes I like the V2s they were an excellent all round locos. I recently bought a model one, St Peters School and was going to fit a new hornby sound chip in it which went up in a puff of smoke so I will be having another go shortly when the replacement arrives. Richard
Oddly, these engines weren't built to last forever, but to fill a gap. Yet, here it is. The K & WVRWY has done a wonderful job.
Thanks, yes a unique Loco which is still working well and seems very popular with visitors with all the different sounds it makes.
lovely layout, though I'm worried about all those facing cross-overs!
Hi, Thanks for your complement, yes there are more facing points than I would like but it's the usual modellers problem of trying to squeeze too much trackwork into the layout. I have fitted some dummy facing point levers in a couple of places which look good but the problem is if the couplings aren't fully tensioned they can act like mini decoupling ramps when the carriages pass over them and separate the coaches. Regards. Richard
Is it open to visiters
Hi, it's my own layout but I actually live in the region of Murcia in Spain so if you are ever nearby on holiday get in touch. Richard
Outstanding video and thanks for sharing. Dave
Brilliant. I like these sound stories. 👍👍👍
Thank you very much, I'm glad you enjoyed it and has you say I think adding the sound gives it a bit more realism. Richard
Enjoyed the video. The sound makes it more real. If they could get the smoke correct and realistic that would be even better.
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it, as you say the sound makes it more realistic but I have never bothered with smoke units as it always looks to wispy and false to me.Richard
Well done. What an impressive video. Very atmospheric.
Thank you, great comments such as yours make it all worthwhile. Richard
Really nice job. Your video appeared in my feed. I'm not personally interested in weathering steam locomotives (diesel guy, sorry), so I won't be watching the video. But I did want to leave a comment, as the thumbnail really caught my eye as a great piece of work.
Awesome!! Those teeny tiny vegetables are fricken adorable. All in the details. Love it!
I enjoyed that, so I've subbed to see what else you get up to. 👍👍👍
Thanks. I'm glad you liked it. Richard
Brilliant effect - Lovely little Diorama - Gr8 Job 🤩🙌🏻🏆
That scenery looks amazing 😎👍👍👍
Thank you very much for your generous comment,. Richard
@@byfordmodelrailway786 No problem 👍
Very interesting layout, especially as you've managed to capture both open countryside and built up areas.
Thank you, its really just recreating my trainspotting days, grew up in the Town and spent all my Summer Holidays at Grandparents in the country watching express trains heading for York. Richard
Well I really enjoyed that, you certainly have captured that Midland feeling👏👏 The photo backdrop works very well. Wonderful all round.
Thank you very much I'm glad you liked it. Richard
You cannot fool me... this is not a model layout!!
Thanks very much your comment is really appreciated😄😂 Richard
I stumbled across this as I’m a diesel electric fan. Very impressive 👏🏻
Thank you for your kind comments, it's quite rare to find early recordings of Diesel sounds so when I discovered this set I was determined to make use of them. Regards, Richard..
Another excellent video. Thank you.
A real find this, great layout (as I said previously) with excellent, realistic, modelling. Love it! More, please. Regards, Eric
Thank you Eric, I'm glad you are enjoying the videos, I do have more planned but it takes a while to make them. Regards, Ricchard
Only just seen this layout and I love it already. Great modelling. Best regards, Eric.
Hi Eric. Thank you very much for that, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Regards. Richard
Great sounds . Very realistic
