    This is genius. I have converted a variable speed lathe and have other ways to do this, but they are all much more expensive. I am going to try to resist getting one of the pottery wheels.

    This is a great idea! Thanks for sharing it. I have a couple Tomz sharpeners that I often use but this is a better deal. Cheaper and it has variable speed. You can also buy full sheets of sandpaper, glue them to the disks and trim. This will allow you to use really fine paper such as 1000 grit on up. Just ordered mine. A link to the Loctite woud be appreciated as well as more specifics on the acrylic disks. Are the ones you bought 0.080 in thickness?

    Very good video Cousin Jack! That's very informative. What kind of rpm are you turning for honing? I have a variable speed lathe that's reversible. You got me thinking that I might be able to create a setup for honing my knives with those disks and wheels you mention in the video. Or maybe there's some kind of product that's already designed to fit on a lathe?

  • @crouchvalewoodcraft

    This is a great idea. I've been working on something similar, using a windscreen wiper motor and plywood discs, but having the variable speed is a big improvement. It's interesting how you've come up with different solutions to what i have been doing. I will definitely get one of these and give it a go. Thanks for sharing 👍

    I glued two pieces of leather together using super glue and then used my wood burning tip to put my name on one side and then the knife’s “name” on the other side. This helps me orient the knife to the slot - the handle on the right and the “name” facing me so I can read it. I recommend using a sharpie marker and not use the wood burning tip- that’s what I’ll do on my next one. I need a better method of protecting my gouges and V tools. Do you have any suggestions for curved blades and V tools?

    • @WoodCarvingWeekly
      @WoodCarvingWeekly 11 днів тому

      Hi Laurel! Thanks for sharing your blade cover technique! It sounds like the Sharpie would work well with orienting the knife with the cover. For gouges and curved tools I use flexible plastic tubing. It’s readily available in lots of different radius sizes and you can just cut it to the length you need.

    I was very interested in the Flexcut Pro until I learned they they made the Pro Detail blade THICKER than their other detail blade. I think that's ridiculous and misleading to call that decision, "Pro." Now I'm learning that they didn't even bother to smooth the edges on the corners of a piece of steel 🤣. This line of knives isn't for carvers. It's an exercise in Streamlined, Corner--Cutting Manufacturing.

    • @WoodCarvingWeekly
      @WoodCarvingWeekly 13 днів тому

      Hi Ky! Yes, Flexcut made a few choices that are suboptimal. The new handles and the flat grind seem to be on the right track. I guess they made a business decision with some of the other choices.

    • @kyb9623
      @kyb9623 13 днів тому

      @@WoodCarvingWeekly Yeah, I hear you! I was impressed with the flat grind and the handles!

    • @100BearPaw
      @100BearPaw 8 днів тому

      Keep in mind what matters is the thickness behind the cutting edge. The pro series has a full flat grind. If they did that with the standard thickness, it would be too thin to be stable for use. So it was thickened to be at a stable thickness when at the full flat ground edge. Vs the standard blade with a much shorter grind. Closer to a high Scandinavian grind. The full flat grind is much easier for the non professional sharpener to keep flat during stropping and actual sharpening on stones. If you take calipers to them both, I bet you would find the pro series to have a thinner edge.

  • @kyb9623
    @kyb9623 13 днів тому

    For blade covers I use the Scandinavian Birch Bark Sheath technique, but with thin leather. Some kind of adhesive is necessary to keep the binding strand in place. I've used super glue successfully. But yes, the same, exact steps will work with thin leather.

    Nice video Cousin Jack. I make myself leather sheaths for knife and palm tool blades. I bought a cheap leather stitching kit and a sheet of leather, then cut to size depending on blade size.

    Thanks Jack for another informative video. I look forward to them every week. I like the face that you carved on that dowel. Please do it again and make a tutorial video on it. It looks like a good beginner video and a good practice whittle.
