Hi Cousin Jack, thanks again for another very informative video on carving & carvers. I look forward to your weekly video and find them very helpful as a relatively new carver. I did try the process you mentioned on your video on burnishing & I was very pleased with the result. I live in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada & I went to one of the shoreline of a community near by (Witless Bay) & picked up several stones that have been washed smooth by the sea & I was quite pleased with the result when I burnished a couple of my carvings. Keep up the good work because it is “essential” for those of us who are always looking for tips & ways to approach carving. Thanks again.

Hi Bruce! It’s always great to hear from my carving cousins in the great North! I’m happy to hear that the burnishing worked out well for you. Thanks so much for your comments, it really means a lot to me! Happy carving!

I appreciate you featuring different carves and how they use various carving tools. And I'm grateful that you consolidated into one episode. I'm 56, blessed to be retired, and I just grabbed a bunch of carving tools to start my journey.

After watching the Van Kelley video on "why you shouldn't buy cheap tools" I was extremely disappointed by the attitude he presented to his audience. We don't all have money to spend on top quality tools and the scornful way he spoke down to the parts of his audience that may have no other options than to buy cheap tools was belittling and disrespectful. His elitist and gatekeeping attitude is why I'll never watch another Van Kelley video.

Hi Ross, I appreciate your perspective regarding Van’s video about cheap tools. I guess it’s important to make the distinction between the cost of a tool and the quality of the tool. I’ve been able to find some excellent tools from estate sales and on EBay that were very cheap. I also believe that some of the best tools are those that you make yourself.

      Thanks for your reply.
I have encountered the same attitude from the fly fishing community. "If you don't have Loomis or Sage then you're not really fly fishing, so don't bother."
Van's attitude in that video was the same. "If you don't have the best tools then you're not really able to do it properly." This puts up a barrier to entry that keeps people out of the hobby. "Well, I can't afford a $700 set of chisels so I might as well go and crochet instead."
Meanwhile, Gene Messer is sitting in his garage with a $10 Stanley knife turning out carvings that are both excellent in quality and in quantity. And he does it without disparaging the choices and limitations other people might encounter in the process of discovering the craft we love so much.
I just hope that anyone looking to take up carving finds Gene first!
Thanks for your videos, btw. I have found many excellent channels and hidden gems thanks to you.

@@rossphilpot7080 Thanks very much Ross! You’ve reminded me of a saying from Bart Wilson. He says “It’s not the tool, it’s the toolee”. It’s all about the skill of the carver not the cost of the tools.
