Honestly, they kind of missed a cool feature if they made meteors hit vulcanus on occasion and you had to build orbital defense or something to prevent it.

Pretty sure if anything its just basically an immune response. We call it "evolution" but that doesnt literally mean natural selection. Seeing as killing is just as much a trigger for evolution as is pollution, I'd liken this to the biters transforming to a more battle-ready form. One they likely had dormant to begin with.(Recall, other than the fish, they are the *only* creature their size or larger, with 0 predators. In such a state, society will naturally drive them to take smaller, more energy efficient forms). As you crash land, the initial vicinity is quite sparse of biters, but we know if you travel outward even at the start of the game, the nests become far more numerous and dense. That would imply that the rocket itself likely wiped out the immediately local biter population. This likely kick started a slow ramp up of a sort of hive-scale "immune response" to eliminate the invader (us). As we produce more toxic pollution and kill more of them, it triggers a survival response to try to eliminate us. The killing and the pollutants further exascerbate the generation of "battle" focused units to eliminate the threat. Meanwhile their hives try ro recolonize land uninhabited by themselves. Recall that they *only* attack if they see you or there is pollution. Your hypothesis is disproven by virtue of immediate attacks upon receiving pollution. Otherwise they would happily bake in it and we would happily bake them in it to watch it get funneled away.

My theory is that all the nests are connected to each other under ground like mold it's why they all simultaneously have the same evolution and why the nests seem to just pop out of the ground a certain distance from other nests without anything having to go there and build it.

My headcanon is that your ship blew up so hard when it crashed that it significantly weakened biters in a wide area near your start, so the closer the biters are to the ship, the weaker they are. Then they just try to slowly regain strength. And the rest of the planet is just fully evolved biters.
Do those things remind other people of grumble too?

The last planet actually does sound perfect - As a seablock player I've discovered that no resources is actually code for infinite resources!
Sadly, you really can't get iron or copper from the ammonia ocean. You can get them from space and then drop them from orbit, which is infinite, though that still leaves you without any stone, which is really important in Aquilo due to needing concrete to build in most places. What you can get from the ocean is mainly just water and rocket fuel. Combine that with the oil and fluorine and you can make sulfur... And not much else since lithium needs both lithium brine, which is finite, and holmium, which isn't even on Aquilo.

I had a worse setup where my request chests would put wood into a splitter with input priority on the wood side that goes straight to furnaces/boilers. Worse than yours because it wasn't a waste.

This is a funny video to have recommended now that 2.0 is out. Once I unlocked the recycler I up-cycled all my wood to the highest quality I have access to. Now I have chest with 2k epic wood in it and I have no idea what to do with it, but it's only ONE chest!
I just feed my wood into my power plant.

If you dont expand fast enough though, they DO destroy your factory to the last furnace. The evolution further out could be explained by supposing biters are divided into factions and the nests do infight, we just dont see it, therefore tye evolved biters spread outwards and dominate the small ones due to natural selection.

I take exception to your comment about the tank not being useful. It is a super weapon in the early game. But yeah once you get to later game, the spider with legs and shields mixed with your personal lasers in your suit is basically invincible.
My buddies and I made sure to hit gleba last and when we did we were all kitted with 6 personal lasers in mechs along with a very large ship with every defense we have access to. It is not enough and I am scared
The only thing which irks me in the design of the Biters in general is that they evolve with time as well, it's only a small factor when compared to pollution or killing them sure, but it's still feels wrong both in the "conspiracy theory" and the actual mechanics of the game. In other words, I feel that the time factor should be slowed down immensely since newer players would need more time to figure out how to create factories, and thus it creates a difficulty loop where you might be figuring out how rails or chemicals work and then end up outpaced by the biters. This is coming from someone who hasn't made a rocket yet and feels that it's a bit too harsh for them to evolve based on time, you make sure your pollution cloud doesn't hit them while you're figuring out complex mechanics like blueprints, signals, rails, etc and they still wreck your face in.

The footsteps sound less like footsteps and more like a really bad drip, especially near the end. No one pitter-patters that consistently and I don't know why it feels so off compared to basically any other walking sound I've heard in a game but it just sounds WRONG.

I don’t think the biters are addicted so much as it’s an irritant that mutates them. They then organize like ants would to go and destroy the thing irritating/changing the hive. Eusocial insects like normalized automated life, so changes brought on by the pollutants although evolutionarily useful only serve to annoy and make the hive more aggressive, causing build ups of hives going to disrupt the factory disrupting them.
If you use hit and run tactics and just focus on destroying the nests with a rocked launcher and then run away you can see that the "survivers" merge with a other nest close by its not allways and kinda hard to observe but i could see it quite often considering i love to used the power of the flash combined with rocked propellt freedom to convince violationlty that this is now my garden where i want ti dump my radioactiv wasted and the HOA can f off
It might be worth mentioning that this short is incredibly out of context when compared to the original video it’s from and is also pre-space age.
And now with Space Age you can just feed the wood into a recycler. Anything that can't be reduced to a more basic resource just gets disappeared.
