That's crazy. I carry one of these stoves in my truck. There are other things on that list, like HCl that anyone with a swimming pool will have. Also, anyone with a car with a battery in it has sulfuric acid, also on that list. While here in the US we aren't prohibited from these, there are some equally as stupid state laws that over-generalize. We're not allowed any lab glassware, for instance.

They flogged them stoves in Poundland ,the must be millions of them hex tabs knocking about . They also included them in survival fire starting kits .

What a waste of space. OK the Hex stove fuel is toxic but I never thought those stoves were useful for serious cooking anyway,. Give me a small Primus stove any day of the week or now one of the more modern and efficient "MSR" type of pressure stove that burns almost anything liquid and flammable. This new solid fuel stove seems an expensive means of heating a cup of water and I´ll bet the fuel blocks are very expensive. The other downside is that the fuel comes in a plastic container with presumably a plastic/foil pull off cover. Not a very ecological solution even if the fuel is and not everybody is careful about disposing of the plastic items carefully. In the demo one fuel tablet did not heat a great deal of water. Many years ago now we used the hex blocks, or the more efficient Meta tablets, in place of methylated spirits to preheat our pressure stoves and lamps as it was one less liquid to spill or leak.

Glad I don't live in the UK! I keep an Esbit stove and hexamine tablets in my backpack along with Life Straws and other survival gear.

I've always used a Trangia meths cooker. Take enough fuel and you're fine. If in France, buy some 'alcool a bruler' - it burns more cleanly than our purple stuff . . .

Whatever the reason they have for making it illegal who on earth is going to police it because you can't get a policeman out to your house after a burglary let alone you cooking on a stove in the middle of nowhere.

I can understand the law if your intention is to make an I, E, D .but 90% of the population only know it as a fuel source, and innocently use it ,to jail just for having it when your camping to me is as silly as banning knives , there are way more dangerous ways to make an I,E,D or in a knifes situation a shank .It's not the materials that are the problem, in my opinion ,it's lack of education, not regulation. We used Hexi blocks in the army !! Absolute sh8t ! They gummed up the bottom of the mess tins with a sticking black substance that was very difficult to clean of !!! I also took a small gas stove with a small gas cylinder !! Much easier !!

I don’t have a hexi stove…grew up using sterno however, I did notice that 12% hydrogen peroxide is on there and I use that around the house all the time. I buy it in the gallon bottle and then dilute to the strength of whatever it is I need it to do. From cleaning to safely killing the most obnoxious little black (not really a fruit fly, but kinda is) pests. Seriously, I wouldn’t let a teenager use it, but frankly since I can spray it on the soil around the plants and know that the sun will convert it to water in a couple of hours🤷🏼‍♀️

Erm, the stove is not banned, Hexamine fuel blocks are. You can get non hexamine blocks for the stoves quite easily these days, indeed several solid firelighters on the market make good substitutes and have done for years.

They're not fsntastic, they're f'ing terrible things. Just about every active body I knew carried a meth burner. Vehicle mounted you'd carry a full trangia or similar. Cadets & TA seem to have fond memories because the army to them was like camping with guns. Oh & that mess tin will give you altzimers, we changed them for steel ones & a steel whistle kettle. That Charing is best cleaned off with grass..........

Are fire lighters banned as well ? They are the same as Esbit tablets for the stoves. Cleaner too apparently.

It's a stupid law because their isn't much difference between a solid fuel stove and an alcohol fuel stove it seems like that the solid fuel stove was banned for arbatary reasons rather than practical ones like safety

First thing we used on hygiene camp in Monmouth but got big boys stove as I moved through my army career. Now if out fishing I use both gas and a gasifier twig stove.
