Hexed & Countered - November Look Ahead
The famous photo by Joe Rosenthal was indeed a picture of the second flag raising. However, it was NOT a reenactment. There was an order to raise a larger flag. That is what was caught in the photo. It has been inaccurately described as a reenactment or a staged photo for decades. Sorry, just an old Marine who takes these things way too seriously (Like most old Marines) I will be getting this game and Tarawa. Thanks for the game play on this and all the other games you have brought us.
Thanks for the clarification!
Excellent point. In a similar fashion, I was surprised the card titled Heroism and Medics didn’t use the proper terminology of Corpsmen. Thanks Joe!
@@jameshiers9679 All Marines respect their Doc! My FIL was a Fleet Marine Corpsman in Vietnam.
How long did it take for this game to ship from Worthington?
Less than a week. It was quick.
@ Thank you!
Excellent video showing how to play. Very interesting and well explained. Looking forward to watch a gameplay part !!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I have this, i think, all set up on my back table. Going with the full staffel. All ten. I like a challenge.
Nice! Good luck.
Subbed
Thanks!
did anyone ever scan the charts in? I have this but just play on vassal with my charts, but I don't have a scanner
I don't know. Good place to check would be Board Game Geek. A lot of game publishers don't let the Vassal creators put the charts in to make sure people own the game. I've played a few like that and do what you mentioned, use the hard copies that came with the game.
Love the game and really enjoying this series. I've just discovered you today and it's an instant subscribe. Cheers!
Thanks!
I enjoyed the playthough but it seemed to me (1st time I've seen the game) that the zombies were particularly weak. I would think that if zombies assaulted an infantry unit and destroyed it that it would spawn some additional zombies. Any reasoning or explanations why zombies destroying infantry don't add to the zombies ranks by making more zombies from the destroyed infantry?
I messed that up. Zombies that kill units do spawn more zombies and the type of zombie (the game has several) depends on what they killed. They can come from civilians, lycans, and various military units. I completely forgot about that when I did the playthrough.
Just got the boardgame, I don't seem to have the campaign sequence of play aid you refer to ? Can you download this elsewhere ? I have looked , no joy
Found it by luck!
Glad to hear you found it.
Nice - I have Tarawa but this one flew under my radar. Cheers!
Looking forward to playing this one (and Tarawa too).
You keep forgetting the Japanese +1 to melee rolls.
Thanks!
Mine came in The other day!
Looks like it'll be good and not overly complex or time-consuming. Hope you enjoy!
Yes I'm looking forward to see your playthrough . I enjoy playing Tarawa 1943 haven't won yet lol
Looks good. Thanks for the great video!
Thanks for watching!
Joes gonna have to get a third job at the rate he’s acquiring games
Just a combination of Kickstarters arriving at the same time and holiday sales. Have a few more crowdfunding games I should be receiving soon. And yeah, my backlog is getting ridiculous.
@@HexedAndCountered i've ordered 3 games in the past year. Joe is way outpacing me.
Looks interesting. It's amazing how defensible such a desolate place turned out to be. I recently picked up the Strategy & Tactics Iwo Jima.
Looking forward to trying it out. The Tarawa game received some decent reviews (I got that one as an add-on with the Kickstarter for Iwo). I've looked at the S&T game too, but haven't pulled the trigger on it yet. Please let me know how it is after you've tried it.
What are 2-3 of your favorite things about this system?
That's a good question. The first thing I would say I like is the importance of leaders and how they effect the game. Second would be the volume/variety of content - there's a lot available and it seems like they've always got something in the pipeline and most of their games have relatively inexpensive expansions. Finally, the way the games provide a lot of content (generally around 40 scenarios per game), and the way the playbook provides a ton of historical context that ties all the scenarios together. On the flipside, as you probably know, there have been some issues with preorders taking a very long time to come to fruition. The components are sometimes a mix of old versions and new (this is true of Fire & Sword) and the new counters, while I like the feel of them, have center nibs rather than corner nibs (the older counters have corner nibs and are clipper-friendly).
Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
I just got this game. Thank you for the introduction. It will help me with the first play through.
Great! Enjoy the game.
Just for the cover I want to buy it 😂 How does this game look and feel compared to Lock n load series ? It’s my favorite so far but I’m curious about every other titles.
Yes, the art is great in this series. I also enjoy LnL Tactical. I'd say that BoB is more streamlined and probably slightly easier to learn than LnLT. The morale system is very nicely integrated in BoB and it focuses heavily on promoting the realistic "4F" type of tactics. The major thing that BoB lacks in comparison to LnLT is the latter's leaders and heroes which give LnLT a more narrative feel and more of a sense of heavy individual contributions. The combat system is more complex in LnLT but I still feel it's approachable. BoB is also solely WWII (for now at least - I have no idea if the plan is to expand further) while LnLT goes into other eras like Vietnam, alt-history WWIII, etc., and LnLT has the solo assistant while BoB does not. BoB absolutely can be played solo, but you have to make some accommodations.
Mine should be here any day now. For me, I'd rank this series second only to the OST series. I love the realistic 4 F's (Find em, fix em, flank em & finish them) you have to apply in order to win as it's not bloody like other tactical games thus adding more realism. Great vid as always Joe... TY!
Thanks Ray!
I am curious to know what are your thoughts about this series vs Last Hundred Yards series
That's a challenging decision, as I genuinely enjoy playing both games. Each offers a solid approach to promoting realistic tactics, albeit in slightly different ways. LHY leans towards being slightly more complex, yet it remains accessible. In terms of components, BoB has an edge with features like pre-rounded counters, sturdy maps, and excellent artwork-though I must emphasize that GMT’s production values are already high, and these differences are largely aesthetic, with no real impact on gameplay. If I were absolutely forced to choose, I would likely favor LHY for its outstanding combat model. However, the margin is very narrow, and I’m grateful to have the opportunity to enjoy both!
The maps are definitely more details on Band Of Brothers but I find the counters just too busy if not borderline clownish. For me LHY is closer to playing SL or ASL however they are both fun to play
@@patrickols I wish the counters were a top down view like Old School Tactical, but I like the art in this game.
This is just a beautiful game!
Agreed!
What do you think of the system and the Fire and Sword module?
I enjoy the system, especially the way it uses leadership. It balances complexity vs. "realistic feel" quite well. The module itself is interesting too. I've played games on the fighting around Budapest before, but never at the tactical platoon-level scale.
Tweezers Skill -2, Fingers Skill +5 -) From the looks of it, the Hungarians won't last much longer. Thanks, Joe!
Haha, that sounds about right! On both counts.
Chat GPT's warning that it doesn't know 1870 census data is correct. The numbers it cites are probably somewhat close, but not correct. Probably fine for a baseball sim, but I feel like googling city populations would be just as fast and more accurate.
Scans of the census data are online. They're harder to read, at least for me, but you're right about AI often being wrong. When I started Figment six or so years ago, I used the census data and it was slower but more accurate. ChatGPT has gotten better. It now crawls the web and cites its sources. But as with anything, we can all do this whatever way we think is best. Thanks!
Looking forward to a playthrough and to see how it compares to "Navajo Wars".
Thanks - playthrough coming soon!
19:19 …I know this isn’t in the playbook you were following, but after the 10th Pz attack at Sedan why they didn’t do a Breakthrough Combat on the French 2-1-6 Recon unit index 5439. It’s 10-1 odds before any TQ shifts giving I think an Auto DS result. 22:50 rail mv OT ....I THINK the OT comment re movement in rail hexes is for ground movement. I think rail movement is 15 hexes period. Rule 7.6.4 detraining ....you remove the rail marker at the start of your turn.
Thanks for the clarifications!
Thank you, H and C. Great video as expected.
Thanks!
STHS is definitely the best.
No arguments here. FHM could be the best, but... that's a topic for an entire dissertation.
Great review of a great game.
Thanks!
Thanks for the video. Ben Hull, either with this series or with Fields of Fire, sure is one of the very best.
Agreed! I have Fields of Fire (and FoF2) and plan on doing videos for them in '25.
@HexedAndCountered - smashing! I sure look forward to these future videos.
Joe, This is an extremely excellent video!! Thanks for shedding light on this classic system. Tom C
Thanks Tom, glad you enjoyed it!
Nice review! I also enjoyed the play through - found it very helpful. I hope to get this to the table soon’ish. Cheers!
Thanks! Hope you enjoy the game.
Awesome
I'll be interested in watching some gameplay, thanks!
Thanks - first gameplay video should be this weekend.
Thanks for the video.
Glad you enjoyed it.
It appears the game has sold well, but the development wasn’t very good and there are quite a few rules lapses.
Fixed with errata or rules Q&A? Looks great.
@@RommelsAsparagus I don’t know, we gave up.
I haven't delved too deeply into the rules. Had a work trip and just got back so will be reading them soon.
Outstanding review and i have ordered this game from Compass during their holiday sale. Liked the way you actually walked through a quick overview of the charts and scenarios in a relatively short video. Very well done and much appreciated.
Thanks!
sorry, but light horse artillery is not just "basically calvary". Perhaps, you just meant for movement's sake ?
It's been a while, but yes, that's likely what I meant.
Cool! I play this all the time! What a great game - one of my all time favorite PC games. It really captures the look and feel of Warhammer 40K. I just recently moved on to learning the Orcs ... they are so much fun. I hope they continue to come out with new stuff for this - factions and campaigns hopefully. P.S. - I just noticed ... are you forgetting to use your Empower Surge ability?
Awesome! Yes, this is my favorite Warhammer 40k game too. And yes, I did forget to use the Empower Surge!
@@HexedAndCountered Don't worry - I forget sometimes too ... that's why I noticed! 😆 I still buy all those HQ special powers and always forget to use those!
Just also wanted to mention, this game has the best written rulebook in the history of wargaming. It's a very innovative system never before seen and explained with the clearest rulebook ever published.
Thanks, I agree! It's written in a way that makes the system very approachable, which is great!
@HexedAndCountered People now talk about the "Jerry White format" of rules because of this game.
I buy and learn the games, then pack them away and play them on vassal
That's what I've doing with really large games. I just don't have the tabletop space for some games.
Awesome video!
Thanks!

10:03 remember the -2 drm for WC Ruppert
I really enjoyed the first video. Why doesn't this video have subtitles? Could you add them?
The subtitles are automatically generated by UA-cam but this one seems to have stuck in "processing."
Well, I don't know if you finally did anything to make them appear (there they are!), but thanks, at the very least, for your attention (and for the video!)
34:50 if a Light Infantry unit with a current strength of one alone in a hex is attacked in Close Combat by anything other than another one strength point Light Infantry unit, it is automatically eliminated. (11.6)
When you move onto enemy artillery unit, you mark it as “captured” but do not remove it from play. It stays on the table as it can be recovered later by the original owner, in which case you’d flip the counter to the “disabled” side. Captured guns are worth 2x as many points as disabled ones. Both are done firing for the rest of the battle though. (10.8.8)
