Jura The Sound NAS Whisky Review S5E45
Переглядів 21321 день тому
The Sound, a Jura Distillery Travel Exclusive Single Malt Scotch Whisky release is opened and reviewed by Colin, Malcolm, and a guest tonight on #TBWD. This Jura release, aged in bourbon barrels and then finished in casks that held 15yo PX sherry, really delivers in ways that are surprising for a 42.5% ABV release in the gimmicky Travel Exclusive market. With wonderful notes of chocolate, hazel...

A Jura 10yo Single Malt Scotch Whisky from the 1990’s is opened and reviewed by Colin and Malcolm, who are joined by a friend tonight. This Jura release immediately poses a challenge, but with patience the guys (and gal) get to try a Single Malt from Jura that really exposes the gentle maritime notes of some older Jura releases. What is the oldest Jura Whisky you have tried? Let us know in the ...
Inchgower 10Yo Whisky Review Mossburn No.2 S5E42
Переглядів 173Місяць тому
We review the 46% ABV 10yo Inchgower Single Malt Scotch Whisky released by the IB Mossburn tonight on #TBWD. This is a first for both Colin and Mal; as neither have had an Inchgower Single Malt nor a Mossburn Scotch Whisky release before. This Inchgower expression, distilled in 2007, seems to tick all the classic Speyside region boxes and has Malcolm declare “I’ll drink this anytime, anywhere”....

The 2007 Islay Barley Single Malt Scotch Whisky release from Bruichladdich is reviewed on #TBWD tonight. Coming in at 50% ABV, this Single Malt from Bruichladdich presents the guys with complexity not expected from a 6yo Scotch Whisky and they seem to enjoy it. Watch as both Colin and Malcolm are wrong on some key points and correct on others. Let us know your thoughts in the comments; have you...

One of my favorite episodes. Loved the conversation between you two. Very informative. Very entertaining.
randy johnson
Outstanding as always gentlemen and yet another distillery I have to find a bottle of. I can find multiple GlenAllachie bottles at a store by me but not this particular LE release. I grab one of them. Thank you and keep up the great work. Cheers...
Cheers and Happy New Year to you. We are looking forward to some of the GlenAllachie Cask Strength releases as well....come on Randay. (New Season starts for starts in mid February, time to rest our livers). Cheers!
Great review as always. I’ve written off Glenallachie ever since Billy put his signature on everything to try and sell the old juice, albeit re-casked, at much higher prices. Maybe I’ll get one of these new ones… it is getting to be his juice (2017 he bought GA) and he does know what he is doing. He has now some peated GA called Meikle Tòir, which is okay. Specially the one called Turbo - which is very good. BTW, I am going to to be on you neck of the woods these next few days. But more by the “college on the hill” area. Time to check some of those state liquor stores. Slainte!
Happy New Year sir! Enjoy your time near the Big Green!. Season 6 starts mid February. Cheers mate.
@ Happy new year! Can’t wait for the next season. Craigellachie 13 was in sale at the SLS for $49. So one of those was a great New Year’s dram. A lot less snow than expected. But there is a big storm coming! Stay warm!
Again, a very nice review. While I have not had a Billy Walker dram, I have had the Glenallachie 12 Year. Two bottles as a matter of fact. The Billy Walker drams I have had are The Glenglassaugh Evolution and Torfa. Both of those are superb. I am a Billy Walker believer. I look forward to your videos in 2025. Cheers!
The Torfa is a superb whisky, we agree. Season 6 starts mid February. Happy New Year sir!
Cheers Colin & Malcolm 😉 Seasonal Greetings, I hear 'Meikle Toir' (Billy Walker's best attempt) has landed Stateside & I hope you add it to the bar 😋
Cheers and Happy New Year to you! Currently there are none of the Meikle Toir releases, but they are on the list, we are, however, looking forward to some of the GlenAllachie Cask Strength series (of which we have several). Season 6 starts mid February, now we rest our livers. Cheers mate!
Would you recommend that a whiskey novice such as myself would be prudent to stay away from complex whiskies until I was a little more experienced with some conventional ones?
I would say pick up any bottles you see with a good review while the sales are on, but save them for at least the 3 months it will take for your palate to adapt, plus cut out sugars if you can. Good luck for 2025 @elfblood9127 & let us know if you find your favourite profile.
This is a great question. I wouldn’t… But what I would do is a lot of A and B comparisons. Just try to keep them not super far apart. For example don’t try a Glencadam 10 vs a Port Charlotte 10, because that PC 10 will not let you taste anything after it. I’ve always found amazing notes on Glenmorangie Signet after having a couple of different other drams. These notes never come up when trying it on its own, without comparisons.
I would say most of the time its a waste of money to spend the extra money on complex whiskies when you are not equipped to even detect the intricacies yet. Its like paying to listen to an orchestra and only hearing the strings. If complex malts for a reasonable price exist in your market, sure... but generally I would start training your palate with more straightforward malts.
I would recommend beginning with simple caskings (a bourbon cask only for instance) and learn some of the difference affected by age and ABV...in the same vein, you can also go the peated route as well (simple casking but peated). Then to move on to finish caskings. But try to find and understand the differences and then move to 2nd and finishing caskings, allowing you to pick up the underlying notes and the impact of the additional flavor profiles. Cheers mate and Happy New Year!
Thats a super new release seeing as how it has the new label design. I still cant believe how much they messed up the labels. It was goofy with the Flintstones labels at first and now its just... boring. I've had the 10 YO CS batch 5 and 7, 15YO and a few old bottles from before Billy Walker. They are inferior to the old GlenDronach in every way to me. I've not had any new GlenDronach since I refuse to buy their Chill-Filtered stuff. Most of the GlenAllachie bottlings have such a high Oloroso cask influence already I dont really see how this would be something "Special" Compared to their normal stuff. I'll have some Edradour ALL DAY over something like this I'd say. Then again I've not had it.
We agree, the labeling has been an 'evolution'. We appreciate your perspective on the comparison to GlenDronach (secret: we've never opened a GD, but have close to 10 on the shelf...come on Randy)...Hopefully we get to do a real Billy Walker side by side with his 'true' whiskies, not just bottles of juice that he didn't oversee from start to finish. Cheers mate and Happy New Year. Season 6 starts mid February!
One of the first whiskeys I ever tried. Nice memory.
Cheers, nice 1st Whisky, that's for sure.
He was right. It was five. 2 plus 6 equals eight plus 6 equals 14. 1 plus 4 equals 5.
I rarely drink whiskey or any hard spirits but I thoroughly enjoy watching your channel and vicariously savoring the whiskey drinking experience through you and your guests. By the time the episode is over I feel as though I have actually been imbibing with you. Good work.
Thank you for the comment, it made my wife smile when I read it to her. Cheers mate!
That’s an outstanding French accent you put on Jura!
Merci! Cheers mate
Outstanding as always gentlemen. First off, "Thank you" to Rick and all our Veterans. Second, 30 years ago when I was new to Scotch I was at a Binny's store when I walked past a gentleman pouring samples of Jura. I had never heard of it and was pleasantly surprised by the sample of 10 year old. I purchased a bottle of the 14 year old immediately and enjoyed it over the next 2-3 years. I need to replace that bottle ASAP, 27 years is too long not having a bottle of Jura in the collection. Thank you and keep up the great work. Cheers...🥃
and Thank you for continuing to check out our channel. I believe one of our 1st Jura's was a 21yo, back when we were also getting started and groups of us would chip in on bottles in search of a 'wow' factor that we did not possess the ability (at the time) to comprehend...that said those 21yo Jura's 15 years ago were spectacular. Cheers mate!
Still brings a smile, when you guys pop a Jura, personally I don't😂🥃 Cheers Lads enjoyable watch, but I might have better luck next week to sip along.
LOL!, Randy leads the way. Cheers!
The amount of grey hair in this video... We're definitely not getting any younger. Drink faster, fellas. :)
Try Until We Die?
Why would you drink Jura
When it is not bottled by the distillery, Naturally presented and 12-Years plus showcasing distillate character, BECAUSE ITS INCREDIBLE! One of the distillates treated the worst by their owners. Trust me on that one friend, IB Jura is very Unique.
@@TheSurgeHunter and we have 4 different 'Tastival' releases that we hope Randy brings us to!!!
Great video, alongside the tour video, gives a big insight into Glenfarclas. Many thanks.
Thank you! It was a wonderful experience, without a doubt. Cheers mate!
The first scotch I ever tried was the Ardbeg An Oa, so I feel like I jumped into the deep end of the pool right off the bat. Although "medicinal" was definitely what I smelled and tasted, I liked it. Have also had their 10 year, and liked that too.
As possible, dig deep into the Ardbeg range, some much similarity surround by differences; it really is an amazing feat the pull off with the peat. Cheers mate!
Outstanding as always gentlemen and for once, I had a bottle to drink along with you. I am an Ardbeg fan and after I saw a review of this bottle by another UA-cam whisky reviewer I respect, I picked up a bottle. The reviewer said the barrels were toasted using an infrared method vs. fire. It is supposed to toast deeper and more evenly than fire. The note you posted about the extra mocha toasting of the cask heads is icing on the cake. I really like this bottle. There are extra layers of flavor to it that make it special. Thank you and keep up the great work. Kudos to Larry. Cheers...
I just had this with some capers and just WOW they really bring out the flavors and smokiness!
Always nice to have a glass in hand. Cheers and Happy Holiday season to you mate!
Never had this one, this was about the time when I lost interest in Ardbeg releases as they felt a bit overpriced and underwhelming... I guess I lie a bit, since I did get 3 bottles of BizzarreBQ since that one was super tasty. For like 90 euros too so such a good deal. I love how Malcolm is turning into a peat fiend like most of us. One of Us, Gooble Gobble.
I think I'm 3-4 bottles into BizzarreBQ myself. That one was a home run for sure.
We can't argue that Ardbeg seems to have invested in their marketing team. That said, some of the release still are fantastic. Cheers!
Opening my bottle of this to watch along with you. So excited!!!
Nice
MC Escher, nothing like the self drawing hands... Great review gents!
ahhh Escher...so many stories there...Cheers mate!
The Glenturret distillery is well worth a visit. I purchased the 2023 Triple Wood 43% abv. There's no mention on the bottle regarding the cask process, only tasting notes on the front and some distillery heritage info on the back.
The bottles since Lalique got involved are beautiful. We hope to visit Glenturret in the future (2025?)...and they just announced a transition away from Peat? hmmm. Cheers mate!
Oh the crap I got for not saying it right - Leinster!!! Thank Colin and Malcolm! Excellent Jura!
Cheers!
When Johnny comes marching home again, Jurrahh, Jurrahh We'll pour him a dram of 10 year old, Jurrahh, Jurrahh... I have yet to try a Jura, mostly do the the bad rep it seems to have in the Whisky Tube community, but I hear that the recent Jura 16 Perspectives release is pretty special. That will be my first Jura, if I find it on the shelf. Thanks for the video. This is the reason why I keep a collection of various sized corks for potential replacement service. Cheers!
If at all possible (extremely rare in the US) get an IB Jura. Trust me on that one.
Thanks for the song to guide! I have truly enjoyed several Jura releases and have several on the shelf that I am hopeful Randy will lead us to! cheers mate!
Have you ever had an independent Jura? They are incredible at Cask Strength between 12-30 YO, very herbal and spicy. Very much a unique malt. Sadly the owners completely disrespect their product by nuking it with E150 and Chill filtering it to heck. Get you some IB Jura friendos!
100% agree. I have one 10 year old, one 15 year old and one 17 year old all from independent bottlers and high strength. They are all great and as you said a unique profile.
We did review (in Season 2...yikes!) a Connosieurs Choice release of a 14yo JURA (S2RE20)...The bottle is long empty...would love to try it again. We do have 4 Jura Tastival bottles (different years) that I am super hopeful to try...Come on Randy! Cheers mate!

Great stuff as per usual guys. I have just had the first bottle of Inchgower land for me today , got the 'coopers choice' 2010 "beaumes de venise" (sweet wine cask finish) 53.5% - only had a couple wee drams of it so cant say much yet but it seems pretty decent. Been trying to get a few more bottles for my rotation as i sometimes only have 2/3 to pick from , keeping them on bedroom floor isnt ideal also haha i need space dude.
Bump two of these together for a resonate embrace, or mearly knock a single one against your favorite bottle of liquid exuberance to hear the universal call to celebrate. Call me sappy.. but I do love these glasses ❤😢
Always bump the bell, never the top...so easy to crack there. Cheers mate!
Sorry Colin where you messing about or do you believe it's Juh-ra verses juw rah for pronunciation 😂Never had an Inchgower but I'm open to new experience's, cheers🥃😉
Cheers...stay tuned for pronunciation improvement! So many Whiskies, so little time (money?)...
One of my favorite stores near me in Massachusetts has this one (and a lot of other Mossburns) for $56. Sounds like a pretty good value to give it a try when I get the itch to try something beyond my core faves. Cheers!
We picked this bottle up in Massachusetts, there liquor laws there are much more favorable than NH when it comes to selection. Cheers!
Outstanding as always gentlemen. The only Inchgower near me is a Cadenhead's Inchgower 14 for $99 and after watching this episode, I just may pull the trigger. Thank you and keep up the great work. Cheers...
Thanks! Cadenheads rarely lets folks down with their releases...I might buy it too. Cheers mate!
Oh hey, what happened to you guys doing the food/snack pairings at the end with each whiskey? That was always super interesting to me
You know, we need to bring that back...it's on the menu (see what I did there) for the future! Thanks for the prompt. Cheers mate!
Cheers! Since there are so, so many single malts to taste, I have only had Port Charlotte Islay Barley 2013 from Bruichladdich. That Port Charlotte is devine. Can't wait to try other Bruichladdich.
For an affordable, yet delightful example of Bruichladdie...The Classic Laddie comes in at 50% and is well worth it. a non peated islay. Cheers mate!
I would Reccommend the Port Charlotte SYC:01, a lot less affordable but literal nectar of the gods.
Like a kid in a candy store, Colin! I was surprised you didn't jump up and down with giddy laughter in that warehouse! What a privilege to taste whisky fro the Diageo portfolio in its natural state. They make some of the most beautiful whisky in the world! Unfortunate that their expressions are stripped and colored when they get to us.
I did have to maintain some self-control, that's for sure. 100% agree with the Natural Cask Diageo experience...I have a secret plan to explore more of that warehouse, hoping it comes true!! Cheers mate!
The 15 and 21 are simply amazing! I feel they both beat the 17 and 25 by a mile. But then again that’s me. Excellent episode! Very informative…
I feel fortunate to have all the expressions you listed and now it is up to Blue Randy as to when...Cheers mate!
I love living vicariously through you on this tasting and tour through an iconic distillery. I learned a lot about barrel management there! Fascinating how the older expressions carry peat influence even through the barrels because of previously held content. Well done Colin!
Thanks! It was so unexpected to actually experience peat in a Glenfarclas, and if I hear Deborah correctly some of the older expressions also have peat as it was used as a supplemental fuel source for drying the malt, less as an intentional flavor addition...gotta love the old ways! Plus, we agree, so cool to learn how they attend to their barrels and how the Glenfarclas spirit is affected by that management. Cheers mate!
Nice follow-up video. Deborah has to be the best guide on any distillery tour video I've watched. I sure wish we got that 46% 15 year-old here, or that the US had a 46% option. I've had the 12. It was nice, but not a re-buy for me. There's a store near me that has the 17 for $115, which seems to be the best price I can find in the area. I'm tempted now to give that one a try, despite the 43%. Thanks for the tour. A bit jealous of your experience there, I must say. Cheers!
Thanks! Deborah just knew her stuff, hands down. However she is actually the North American Representative for Glenfarclas..though, we agree that she was a phenomenal guide for both the distillery and the tasting. Following this visit there are many more Glenfarclas expressions in the bar (come on Randy!), and we're hoping to open some in Season 6 (don't forget, if we ever open a bottle that you think you must try...send me a note; happy to send a sample). Cheers mate!
@@TBWD Thanks, fingers crossed then for Randy to land on Arran 18 or anCnoc 24😁
@@jamescostigan3721 I hear wonderful things about the anCnoc 24, that's for sure!
That must have been an amazing experience!
It was an amazing experience! Cheers!
Keep up the great content guys love the channel. Big respect . If you guys can get ahold of M&S single origin 54% Dominican chocolate grab it, its an unreal pairing with whisky. They also do the same 54% single origin with blood orange too just as nice man really top end stuff as good as some of the really pricey choc ive had over the years.
Thanks! We will keep an eye out for that chocolate brand...always looking/trying various brands/blends in search of the perfect pairing. Cheers mate!
@TBWD nice one man have a good weekend, i look forward to the next video you guys put out .
@TBWD if you can't find it easily I'll send you a few bars over man if you can contact me somehow on email or whatever send your address over I don't mind at all dude .
Cheers Colin, I do like a CS Benromach & FYI a Kilchoman Sanaig CS 😋 57.8%. It dropped in the UK in the past week & would look good taking up the #1 slot.🥃
Hmmm, a CS Sanaig...I'm leaning more and more in the CS direction with my purchases...I'll keep my eyes open, for sure. Cheers mate!
Another totally enjoyable show. You know what they say, “A blind squirrel finds an acorn every once in a while“. It was bound to happen, just didn't think it would be No. 1. Malcolm is spot on, there is nothing like shortbread, especially Scottish. Cheers!
LOL! and Mal really did just open the shortbread off camera when I wasn't looking before filming...he knows his shortbread. Thanks and Cheers mate!
I just love this show I bet the stories flow with you guys.
We have been friends for near 'bouts 35 years...and the rest of the #TBWD team is at the 20 year mark. At that point, stories exist. Thanks for capturing that in your thought. Cheers mate!
Wow… Wow… Wow…! Blue Randy is rigged!!!! 😂 Great show guys. Awesome dram! And yes, it is a little highland peat and actually it has some funk to it as well. I love the 21, always overlooked… But I think it is great… Lucky me!
LOL! It was a stunning moment when #1 came up. Thanks....funk, now there's a thought. I'll have to revisit the bottle with that in mind. Cheers mate!
Some of their marketing is keeping them from being considered the holy grail of the new generation along with the likes of Ardnamurchan, I think. The confusing batch number released and a million special releases just fail to draw the attention of many... Still, now that they're of age I've started following them and the whisky is excellent, wish them all the best - happy to see they have such a presence in North America... Reverse curls should be part of any serious self-care ritual, please protect your elbow joints guys.
I agree, the release numbers are prolific...we are well over 20 expressions in the bar now, but the quality is there. That said, your reasoning is sound related to creating confusion. There's a tasting near us hosted by Impex on 11.22.24...hoping to go. Cheers mate!
Gentlemen, thank you again for the fun and informative review. At this moment there is a great indipendent Caol Ila 100 Proof from Signatory Vintage. It is only 9 years old but brillant.
I am not sure if it's for sale in the US?
I may have seen that Signatory release at auction recently...I'll pay more attention at the next one. Thanks for the tip! Cheers mate!
Rather informative, thanks!
Thanks, our host, Deborah, really knew her stuff and was so easy to spend several hours with
She did. And her interlocutor was a grateful listener. It seems I didn't learn anything definitely new, but it was very pleasant to "be invisibly present" in this environment. Thanx again!
Gentlemen, thank you for this review. I enjoyed it very much. Yesterday I ordered this bottle. Actually I was looking for a copy from 2022 because of its excellent reviews. Unfortunately I couldn't find it.
Sorry we missed this comment! We're glad you enjoyed the review...it seems there def are batch differences (to be expected) in the releases. And, Glenturret just announced a transition away from Peat? hmmm. cheers mate!
Great video. Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to Part 2. Cheers!
Thanks. We had a great time and Glenfarclas and Deborah really knocked our socks off. Part 2 coming soon!
Oh, the memories! Lots of changes from my visit about 10 years ago! Loved the video, can’t wait for part two!
Totally great that you've been there too! Part 2 coming up!! Cheers mate
Cheers Colin, I enjoyed your interaction with Deborah, plus I like that camera with it's auto everything😉
Thanks, Deborah was truly easy to hang out with. We were there for at least 3 hours...part 2 coming up soon!
